"This" and "Next" weekend

I used to be a scheduler to a big shot in government. The way I was taught and the way I teach.....for this weekend its "this upcoming weekend" and for next weekend I give the day or a count of how many days away, I'd say "next weekend, 10 days from now"

For me "NEXT" weekend always implies that there is still at least a partial weekend between whatever day it currently is and the full weekend that I am referring to. So if it's Sat. or Sun. and I say NEXT weekend, I mean the very next Sat. or Sun. because I am currently living out THIS weekend as I speak. :) But once Monday hits, if I say NEXT weekend, I mean one full weekend (THIS weekend) goes by first and then it's the one after that.

Clear as mud? ;)

I was with you until the end! Still stand my by Wednesday cut off! Mon/Tue next is the upcoming. Wed and after, it becomes "this" and the next becomes the following week. But still better than my soon to be DIL thinking "next weekend" is tomorrow!! Ughhh.

This Weekend can refer to the weekend that just passed only in context and verbage used in the sentence such as on Monday morning upon arriving at work you state, "I got so hammered this weekend." But on the same Monday morning if I'm making reference to making plans, "Let's go out for dinner this weekend", would mean the coming weekend. Never would Next weekend be the Saturday / Sunday following the day of the week I am on.

Like arriving to work Monday and asking "What did you do this weekend" They respond "I went to the movies". I would say "Oh, Im doing that next weekend"..meaning 5 days from then.

Had a confusing conversation with my sons fiance last night (Thursday 02/20 9pm). She wanted me to do something "Next" weekend. To me, that meant the weekend of the 29/1st. To her, it was the 22/23.

When do you use "This" for last weekend and the next upcoming weekend?
When does "Next" weekend become the weekend after the very next one?

My cutoff is like Wednesday AM !! "This" becomes the very next one and "Next" is the following.
Mon/Tue, "This" was last weekend and "Next" is the very next one.
It's always "this" weekend until the following Monday. "Next" weekend is the one following it.

So, "next" weekend becomes "this" weekend on Monday morning.

There's a couple of limbo days (Sat/Sun of "this" weekend is still "this" weekend).

If you make plans on a Saturday or Sunday for next weekend, it’s for the following weekend.

If you make plans on Monday-Friday you would say this weekend.

If you make plans on Monday-Friday for next weekend, that would be over a week away, though I would clarify with the person you’re making plans with.
Totally agree with this

Interesting how different interpretations are.

For me, this weekend is for the immediate weekend coming up, even including this Saturday morning. So, today is Friday, and to me, this weekend is Sat-Sun, 2/22-2/23. Next weekend follows this weekend.

I think if someone wanted clarification from me for next weekend I would say the weekend following this weekend, so a week from tomorrow (or if earlier in the week, let's say, Wednesday, I would say something like - this coming weekend for this weekend, and would say a week from Saturday for next weekend - if they were asking for clarification.)

It’s February 21.
February 22 and 23 is this weekend.
February 29 and March 1 is next weekend.

Nothing anyone else could say would change my opinion...
This is correct. And there is no other way it could be.

This weekend is always the first one coming up in the future. If it was the weekend that just past it's last or this past weekend. I would've assumed next weekend was 29/1st.

A Wednesday cutoff does not make any logical sense to me. You're using "this" to mean both past and future. How do others have any clue when the arbitrary time is that the word shifts tense? What if your discussion is taking place around midnight on Tuesday? If you're going to use "this" to mean both past and future, at least give people some clues by saying "this past weekend" or "this upcoming weekend". :upsidedow

I'm sure this is a thing because a few people have agreed with you, but I really can't think of any time I've ever had a conversation that went like that. I can only ever recall someone asking "What did you do over the weekend?" or occasionally "What did you do this past weekend?"

And if someone says "I'm doing that next weekend," I automatically assume they mean the weekend that is 12 days away, not the one at the end of the current week (because to me, that's THIS weekend). That said, if I'm making plans I will clarify the date because I do realize that some people use "this" and "next" interchangeably.

Its the verb. Did vs doing. What did you do this weekend vs. What are you doing this weekend.

My normal question for Monday morning is "Did you do anything fun this weekend?" I probably ask it to 5 people every Monday!

Then it applies on Monday & Tuesday also.

And you could equally ask (on Monday) "What are you doing this weekend?" and that would mean the upcoming weekend.

"This weekend" = less than five days away (usable on Monday for upcoming weekend).
"Next weekend" = more than seven days away

If you said that I would assume you meant the following weekend not THIS weekend :upsidedow

So if you went into work Monday 2/24 and said "Oh I'm going next weekend" I assume you mean Friday March 6th-March 8th. I'm pretty sure generally speaking most people would assume the same as me :)

That would just sound weird on a Mon/Tue. I would say "What are your plans for next weekend" Or if someone said on Monday "I wanted to go to the movies this weekend, but never got around to it" I would say "Go next weekend!" meaning in 5 days. Nobody would think I meant 12 days away! A least I hope they dont!
