We are thinking about renting points for the first time for our possible early December trip. I have never rented points before but I am really leaning towards going this way.

What should I know about renting?

How far in advance should I try and book?

How much is typically due at the time of reservation (is it all up-front or do some take deposits/final payments closer to trip time?)

Thanks for helping a newbie :flower:

If you haven't already done so, go to the Rent/Trade Forum and read all of the "Sticky" threads at the top of the page. Read through several of the posts to get a feel for what/how people post their offers.

Depends on which resort you prefer. Early December is a very popular time for Members to visit - low point cost, lots of Holiday activities and wonderful Holiday decorations to see. In addition, some of the internet communities schedule meets for this time.

If you want to stay at one of the smaller resorts (VWL, BCV or BWV), you should start looking now and book as soon as you can. Since OKW and SSR are larger resorts, you can afford to wait a little longer to book for those.. That said, your choices will be limited if you wait much past the 7 month window to book.

Renting is a private transaction - the terms will be whatever you and the owner negotiate. (Disney will not get involved in any dispute that may arise). Some owners will want the entire amount up front, some will take a deposit to make the reservation and allow payment schedules. Most owners consider renting a final, non-refundable transaction. Some will allow you to reschedule if you have to cancel, depending on the status of the points used to make the reservation.

It's a good idea to have a written agreement so that both parties understand the terms.

You're welcome.

Renting can be a great bargain for those who are willing to take some risk and commit $$ ahead of time. Weekday trips (check in on Sunday and out on Friday) are the best values since Friday and Saturday nights cost more points. Sometimes you can do better going through CRO/WDWTC for weekend nights (especially if you cansnag a discount), so be sure to do your homework before you commit.

Ask the owner to explain the housekeeping services - you will not get daily housekeeping if you rent.

That should get you started. I'm sure others will chime in. Feel free to ask additonal questions.

Best wishes -

Hi

First go to this link and read I beleive are the 1st 4 or 5 post they talk about renting etc.

http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=29

2nd - the 1st 2 weeks of December are very busy use times for DVCers to use their points - we usually book our december vacation at the 11 month window - its popular because of low points for the units as compared to other times of the year and all the holiday festivities including MVMCP plus low crowds.

When I rent I make the ressie call or email the person the confirmation number and when I receive the actually confirmation from members services I forward it to the person I made the ressie for - when they receive it I then expect payment in full within 1-2weeks(depending on how far off their trip is)

I am very cautious if the trip is under 1 month - as I can lose my points or they could get placed into holding,

Not sure if this helped - GOOD LUCK!
