I am thinking of purchasing DVC resale but my wife and I think we would like to do Disneyworld once every other year. My question is in regards to the RCI hotels. I know the Disney adventures aren't a good "bang for your buck" when using DVC points (which I know I cant use when buying resale) but what about when they are used for RCI hotels. Do you think its worth me buying into DVC if I only go to Disney once every other year?

A rough calculation on BLT would cost me in the $150 range a night if I buy the DVC which sounds good because the rooms are in the $400+ range. I'm not sure if I would buy the DVC if every other year I'm using it for an RCI hotel that I can book online for a lot less money then the $150 per night I'm spending for the DVC. Any help or advise would be appreciated.

Many people who plan to go to Disney only every other year buy only half the number of points needed to stay in their preferred resort/unit size. Then they bank or borrow for the every other year stay.

I haven't had direct experience trading out via RCI but those with more knowledge on these boards seem to feel it's not a good use of points. They'd probably agree with buying half the DVC points and then using other resources ($) for the years you don't go to Disney.

If you want to go every other year, buy half the points and bank/borrow them so you have just enough for that every-other-year trip.

Thank you everyone! That's an awesome idea I did not think of!

Is there anything with using banked/borrowed points I should know? I thought I read on an old post there is only a percentage of banked points you can use for a trip, or did I totally misread it?

While there are some details that can arise for banked and borrowed points (e.g., where the banked or borrowed points go if you wind up cancelling a trip for which you had earmarked them), in essence, you can use all your banked points and all your borrowed points for a trip.

nah, you can use all of the banked pts from one year plus all of the current pts from the next year to book one reservation with no problems.

as mentioned, if you need to cancel, the banked pts are "stuck" in that new UY and current pts can only be banked forward one UY (i.e. not 2 years ahead to when you would normally have an every-other-year trip) so you would have to rent that reservation or try to make another reservation to use or rent within that use year.

as usual, traveling early in your UY will give you more options...

I think the poster is probably referring to the old DVC policy that only a percentage of your DVC points be banked, depending upon the date you banked them. That policy is obsolete, you can now bank 100% of your points, as long as you do so during the first 8 months of the use year. At four months prior to the end of your use year, banking no longer allowed.
