Thinking of joining DVC....

Hi Everyone-

We are looking into becoming DVC members later this year. We travel to Disney at least once a year and have been staying in deluxe resorts the last few times we have stayed. We figure with all of the money we’ve already spent at WDW, investing in DVC would be a smart move for the years to come.

We want our home resort to be the BoardWalk Villas. Disney said there are only a limited number of points available (we were looking for 160 points). I’ve seen several listings for BWV on Re-sale websites, and the cost per point seems significantly lower . Is it ok to purchase a re-sale? Have any of you bought re-sale?

We will mainly be using our points for WDW, but we are also planning on trips to Disneyland (Grand Californian Villas), Hilton Head and Vero Beach. There are also several places on the RCI board that we are interested in, such as Myrtle Beach, Key West and the Caribbean. If I buy a DVC re-sale, would I be eligible to trade into those other non-Disney places from RCI? From what I understand, if you buy re-sale, you aren’t allowed to use the points for DCL, correct? Is it easy to trade DVC points for those other places I mentioned from RCI?

I bought resale a few years ago. If you plan on staying mostly at Disney and not use it for cruises, I don't see why it wouldnt be a good deal. And if you do opt for a cruise (we LOVE the cruises), you could always rent out your points for that year and use the cash to book the cruise.

We actually have a small contract..100 points..and we also own another non-Disney timeshare that we trade with RCI. This way we get a good mix of Disney and off site places. Its what works for us.

The price different between resales vs direct Disney are too large to ignore anymore.

Thus, I would buy the cheapest (loaded with current points and even last years points already paid for) BWV contract you can find to fit your needs.

it's "possible" but you'd need to plan well in advance (over a year is better with RCI).

IMO i would only buy DVC for DVC stays and not count on using it to trade out.

I am in the process right now of buying BWV for only $55/pt--a savings of $60/pt over what it would cost via Disney.

You can get some great deals right now. I have never traded out to RCI so can't help you there.

If I was buying BWV, I would only buy re-sale. As others have said, the points are just too expensive buying direct.

You cannot book DL resorts other than Grand Californian Villas with resales (I think - because you cannot book any non-DVC Disney resort with resale points purchased after 3/20/11). But GCV can be hard to get if you don't own there.

RCI trading isn't the easiest because not all the RCI resorts are offered and it may take a while to get what you want. And when you want it, it might not be available.

DVC is really best for booking DVC resorts. But do buy resale if you want BWV.
