we are thinking of going to aulani next june 2016 from phoenix, az. where should i start? anyone know approx cost of flights from phx to hawaii and where do i fly into? how do i get from airport to resort, do they have a shuttle or do i need a car or ? do i need to plan activities and restaurants in advance or ? have never been to hawaii, so i know nothing about going there. where do i start?? would probably use my dvc points for the stay, so that part i would know about.

American/USair,Delta and Hawaiian fly direct from Phoenix to Honolulu. I've flown all of these airlines and they all are fine. Go to kayak or expedia or a similar site and find your lowest fare.

Go to the hotel website to find transportation options from the airport to the hotel. If you want to see more of Oahu, you might look into renting a car, either for the whole time, or for a day. Waikiki is pretty fun for a day trip, as is Pearl Harbor.

I would begin by checking airfare. You might get cheaper flights by leaving on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Same with coming home. Also check the prices in and out of Honolulu, kahalui, and Kona. Inter island flights are pretty inexpensive and you might be able to visit two island without paying too much extra. On our first trip it was cheaper to spend 7 nights in Maui followed by 3 nights in Waikiki than fly in and out of Maui. Time of year also matters quite a bit.

Aulani is my favorite hotel in the entire world, but it's expensive. You might want to spend a few days there and then move to a less expensive condo or hotel ( or vice versa). I would suggest a night or two in Waikiki just to experience it. On Maui the Kaanapali area and the the Wailea area are very nice.

I strongly suggest renting a car. They are pretty reasonable priced through discounthawaiannrentals.com. Parking rates can be expensive though, unless you are a DVC member staying at Aulani.

A lot of people think the food at restaurants and supermarkets is more expensive in Hawaii, but I haven't found that to be the case. Maybe I just live in an high cost of living area.

Lots and lots to do and see. Find a good Hawaii travel book or website and do some studying! Have fun planning.
