hi all! i have made the decision to finally purchase a dvc. i have been doing all my research regarding buying from disney or resale. we would really like our home resort to be the beach club, as that is our favorite, but it seems like it is the most popular (and kind of expensive). my question is, if we were to buy at another home resort, just for the sake of 1. it being cheaper, 2. more points because its cheaper--just how hard is it to book the beach club at 7 months advance? or for that matter even boardwalk or grand floridian? i have heard from the store and disney that if that is not my home resort, i will never get it. also, we travel on non peak seasons. any advice would be appreciated!

You question is asked a few times per week so you have plenty of responses to read through.

Bottom line is if you won't be upset when you don't get the resort/room category that you want, then you can buy anywhere.

If you want BCV and love BCV, then buy there if you want to be happy.

Just remember, non peak for Disney is usually peak for DVC. We like to go when the points are less. More bang for your buck.

There are several variables so I'll generalize. IF you're traveling in what is peak for DVC (like early Dec or during the EPCOT special events) then the answers would be slightly different and more stringent, my assumptions are that you're truly traveling off peak which is essentially Jan, Feb, mid April to mid June and mid August to before thanksgiving. Again, assuming not during the 2 big EPCOT events that occur during this time which hit BWV & BCV hard.

In which case you should be fine owning mostly anywhere at WDW if you'll accept any 2 BR type at BCV and you'd have BWV as a backup. That means that SSR is likely your best option here. For anything else you're likely best owning BCV if you have enough knowledge of the system and Disney to truly know what you want long term which generally means a number of visits to WDW in various areas and at least a couple of DVC stays along the way. IF you want the BCV 2 BR 2 queen bed units, you'll have to own there and reserve at 11 months. The other resorts have their specific issues. GF is unlikely to be consistently available but you can get in, same for specific villa types at BLT, AKV, BWV as well. Your specifics and personal choices will end up determining what's best for you. I wouldn't compromise based on price if BCV is truly your best choice or else I likely wouldn't buy at all.

I am one who likes to book at 11 months. While we have stayed at other resorts, I do not like waiting for the 7 month window and the worry /stress that comes with that. I also do not like using the waitlist, even though it has worked for me some of the time. If you will "stress out" waiting for the 7 month window, buy where you want to be and book at 11 months.

Do NOT buy a resort that you would not be happy with if your 7 month choice doesn't work out. The extra dollars you save now will soon be forgotten and mean little compared to the disappointment of not staying where you want to be.

The near park resorts - BCV, BLT, BWV & VGF are often difficult to get at 7 months. Villa size and booking category are important considerations when estimating the difficulty (as is the time of year and the WDW special events). Studios, and the standard (less expensive) & premium views are often gone well before the 7 month window opens. The experience of others at 7 months are not relevant unless they are for the same dates and booking category you want.

Do a search for posts by drusba, who "studies" 7 month availability. You'll find those posts helpful. Here's an example:

Good luck with your decision.

Never is an absolute. Of course you will get it - sometimes. But you will also not get it. How often depends on when you travel, what sort of room you need, how dedicated you are to booking right at seven months and using the waitlist and haunting the website for cancellations. How content you are to get a split stay and whether you measure that as success. How much your second or third choice counts as a success.
