Hi everyone, I am going to try and make this short and quick. We are thinking of buying into the DVC and I am trying to convince my husband this will be a wise investment. In the meantime, would there be a benefit in purchasing four smaller point share (i.e. 50 points each) and having four home resorts? How does that work? And any advise on the convincing of the spouse would be great too!:thumbsup2

First, don't try to convince him that you are making a wise investment. Not an investment by any means, just a prepaid vacation BUT you still have to pay annual member fees that continue to go up.

Buying four smaller contracts makes it easier to sell them when you tire of it all or have financial difficulties. You'd have to purchase the first of those resale since the smallest you can get from Disney now is 100 points at AKV. You want to get the same UY for all four to make it easier to use those points. Even if you bank and borrow to get 150 every three years at a single resort, that probably wouldn't be enough for a good stay for a family of five.

You'd either have to use those points at 7 months out at the non-home resort or at 11 months out at a home resort and have to move between two resorts. If they are separate master contracts, you'd have to transfer between the contracts (only one per contract per year) to get more for a single stay.

As Deb&Bill said, DVC is like pre-paying your vacation. You get many years of vacations at today's prices. It shouldn't be looked at as a financial investment.

As for the 4 home resorts, personally, I think it would be a bookkeeping nightmare. You'll have to keep track of which points you've used/borrowed/banked for each of your contracts and play the 11/7 month window perfectly. If you are very thorough and can keep track of all of those points that have different windows then you'll be fine, but I would pick the resort I like the best (or possibly two) and buy my points there.

We have the bulk of our points at OKW and a small contract at HH. We have never had problems using our points at other DVC properties, although we do tend to travel in the slower seasons. If we were unable to get into a different resort we'd be perfectly happy staying at OKW so it's all good. Again, this is just my opinion. There are lots of people who do the multiple-home-resort thing.

not much of a benefit IMO. (i.e. you don't get the 11 month window for ALL the pts at every resort you buy a small piece of.) it does make it easier if you decide to sell, or to will the separate contracts to your children later on, but you will most likely be paying more per point than if you bought a larger contract (either resale or new with incentives.)

maybe rent a stay in a 1BR at AKV and see how it fits a family of 5. if that goes well, think about buying in...you could start with 80-100 pts that could be used every other year and add-on if you decide to make an annual trip to disney.

I like different resorts - own at OKW, VWL, BWV - all small contracts.
My big contract at OKW is being sold (hopefully)

is you family 5 or 4?

if 4 the studios are fine.

like different resorts because like different places to stay - and can do it all at 11 months. (if I want too)
