We are considering buying resale points. The question I have (may be a dumb on to ask but oh well) is, when is says that carry over points need to be used by say Sept 1, 2014 does that mean you have to had taken the trip before that or just have a trip booked before that to use the points. This is all so confusing trying to get all the facts straight. Thanks for any help.

Assuming that carry over points are points from last year they must be actually used by Aug 30, 2014.

My guess is that these were 2012 use year points that have been banked into 2013 Use Year, meaning that they would have to be used by 2014 Use Year and could not be banked again. If this is the case, those points would have to be used up in a reservation by the end of August 2014.

To echo others, your reservation must be booked and competed prior to Sept 1, 2014.

In the event you do not have a need for those points, you could always rent them or transfer them to another member. There are multiple agencies that will pay you for the point transfer and rent the point for you.

Best of luck with your future potential purchase!

If these were banked points, I don't believe you could transfer them. But you could certainly rent them.

Each night stands alone. The latest you could travel with those points would be for a stay ending the night prior to the expiration checking out on the expiration day.

Thanks for all the help. I just checked the listing we are interested in and I would actually have until 2015 so they are points left from this year. Are carry over points only good for 2 years - when we took the tour a few weeks ago our guide said three years but I have never seen anything that says that. Also, if you buy resale do you still get the 11 months booking window for your home resort. Everything I have read says yes but I figure I would come to the experts.

The 3yr comment may have been a note that you can use 3 years worth of points (one banked, one borrowed, and one current.

The 11 month window still stands. By buying through resale, you give up the concierge collection, Adventures by Disney, and cruising on points. All other membership benefits remain the same at this point, including RCI exchanges (not a good deal, but an option).

You can use points from 3 years to book a reservation but you would be using #1 points banked from the previous year #2 points from your current year and #3 points borrowed from the next year.

DVC points are best used at DVC resorts. So far resale points are still just as good as direct points if you want to stay at WDW, no difference at all. They may impose new restrictions in the future. The last time they did that they announced the restrictions and there was a huge run on resale contracts to be submitted before the deadline. All contracts bought before the deadline were grandfathered in. Hopefully they will do the same in the future.
