We are currently scheduled to arrive 6/13/2011 and depart 6/20/2011, We were going to stay a couple nights at a nice beach hotel, but wife thought we would just take a couple day trips and drive to a public beach and continue to stay at the fort.

should I try and extend my reservation now for two more days? or just ask when we check in?

has anyone else made trips to the beach, for a day from the Fort and back?

if so where is good to go?

I would call and extend my reservations now. You never know how booked the fort will be. As far as the beaches go, I've never taken any day trips to any of the beaches, I can't help you there. I'm sure there is someone of the boards that has that info.

It is always easier to subtract days from your trip rather than to add days to your trip. Make your ressies. Cocoa Beach is about 1hr 15mns from your campsite. There are lots of public beach access parking lots. My favorite spot is Lori Wilson Park. Second favorite is Jetty Park at the Port. Each will cost a couple of bucks since they are county owned, but the bathrooms are worth a couple of dollars. While in Cocoa Beach visit World Famous Ron Jon Surf Shop or the Cocoa Beach Surf Company. While here stop at Rusty's at Port Canaveral (dockside:))for dinner or the TikiBar for drinks. You can even leave on your bathing suit at these places. Another restaurant is Fishlips. It's okay but more of a 'meat market' bar than family restaurant.

If it were me i would just make a reservation at a nice oceanfront campground for a couple of a=days on the way to FW or the way home. We always stop at Hunting Island State Park (SC) on any FW trip for a few days before we check in to FW. You save on teh nightly cost of the campsite and you don't have a couple of hour drive to/from the beach from FW. JMHO

Insta,

I'll be the contrarian of the group.:cool2:

I would say after a week at the fort in a tent putting up with the heat, humidity, possible rains, and mosquitos, my rec would be to treat yourself to a soft bed, air conditioning, lots of fresh towels from the hotel, and some room service. I love the fort but religiously avoid camping here in the Orlando summer.

Others can recommend a place to stay or beach but that's my two cents since you asked. Personally I like the Gulf sand beaches better than the Atlantic's but that is a persoal preference.

Good luck with your plans whatever you decide.
