We are going to get our 9 year old a Kindle for Christmas. She loves to read and has used mine so she is aware of what it is like.
She does have an Ipod Touch and the kindle app, but it is really not easy to read with (small and the backlit screen is harder on the eyes). They are also more expensive now that the wi-fi Kindle is only $139.
There are also free books (the classics) and sometimes free promo books as well.
As for those of you who love to hold a book, I said the same thing until I got my Kindle. Now you can't pry it from my hands! And since it's not backlit, the screen is very easy on your eyes. And you can make the font larger if needed.
Just another thumbs up for a Kindle for a 9-year old!

... easy fix... keep the kindle or nook at home. My own daughter wants to take her iPod to school, and I don't allow that.
I am continually shocked at the lengths people go to one up the rest. Seriously a nine year old with an Itouch, IPad, Kindle, or Nook, laptop, personal plasma tvs, cell phones? NINE?!?! And then we all scratch our heads and wonder why they grow up so fast and get into things that are way beyond their maturity level.
to have one. What a great gift idea!
