Think like a 9 year old. Is this a good idea for a present?

We are going to get our 9 year old a Kindle for Christmas. She loves to read and has used mine so she is aware of what it is like.

She does have an Ipod Touch and the kindle app, but it is really not easy to read with (small and the backlit screen is harder on the eyes). They are also more expensive now that the wi-fi Kindle is only $139.

There are also free books (the classics) and sometimes free promo books as well.

As for those of you who love to hold a book, I said the same thing until I got my Kindle. Now you can't pry it from my hands! And since it's not backlit, the screen is very easy on your eyes. And you can make the font larger if needed.

Just another thumbs up for a Kindle for a 9-year old!

As a mom or an 8 and 10 year old I would wait a couple of years. My DDs both read a ton, several books a week. They take their books with them to school everyday. I would be scared that a nook or kindle would get lost or broken with all of the traveling to and from school. Sometimes things get ruined not because of your own kids but because they are being nice and let another child look at it. Also if they reads that much they are reading during the day at school when they finish their work and I don't think our school would allow a nook or kindle because it would be an electronic device. I would wait till she was older and out of elementary school.

:) ... easy fix... keep the kindle or nook at home. My own daughter wants to take her iPod to school, and I don't allow that. :thumbsup2 So far, to the best of my knowledge, she hasn't tried to sneak it into school.

That's why the iPad or iTouch is a better deal for books - because it's not JUST books.

We've thought about getting a family iPad to play games and read books on. Total space saver, less than a lap top, can surf the web and check email..... anywho, it wouldn't replace a lap top but it would give the kids more to do without borrowing my lap top all the time.

I like the idea of getting an avid-reader a gadget for reading. OP, I think you have a great idea. :goodvibes

Amazon marked their IPOD touch's down the Monday after Thanksgving last year. It was an unheard of thing. The Monday after Thanksgiving is the best day for buying online. Watch for Christmas deals. I bet there will be some discounted IPOD's again.

You said that her parents would be fine with it, but have you checked with them for sure?

Someone gave our ds a gameboy without checking with us first. The cost of the games were on us and I was not too happy about that. A gameboy was in his future, but not at that point in time. I wish the person had checked with us first.

The article on e-books was very good.

Does she buy books or does she get most of her books from the library?

Maybe a gift card so she can buy favorites rather than the kindle/nook.

My 9 year old is yearning for an IPOD touch. You can get the free kindle app for it as well as games, etc.

So is mine. She is hoping for one for Christmas. My son just bough his own with his birthday $. He just turned 12. He uses it all the time.

Well, since I first posted, I called, and the parents said they loved the idea, as it will reduce clutter, so we decided that we were going with a Nook.

I would go with the Nook because you can download library books for free!

I have the Sony and I love it for this reason. I've now read at least 100 free books (all best sellers/current authors) for free by downloading from my library.

If her library doesn't support ereaders (mine does and has a pretty good selection), you can get a non-resident card from the Philadelphia public library for $15/year and they have a great selection.

This is very helpful information. I suspect that as large as the Philadelphia library is it probably keeps up to date pretty well. This might be enough to persuade me to purchase the Nook for my daughter. Thanks so much for this information! :thumbsup2

This!

Buy her the Nook and a membership to a lending library.

WOW :scared1: I am continually shocked at the lengths people go to one up the rest. Seriously a nine year old with an Itouch, IPad, Kindle, or Nook, laptop, personal plasma tvs, cell phones? NINE?!?! And then we all scratch our heads and wonder why they grow up so fast and get into things that are way beyond their maturity level.

For a nine year old that loves to read what to get? Books! Actual books, something she can hold on to, carry with her, dog-ear the pages, flip through the pages in middle of the night and if she loses it, it can be easily replaced.

If you know the genre of the books she enjoys, do a search for similar authors and give her a list of books she may enjoy. Take a trip to a book store - maybe The Strand in NYC and hunt for the books together. You will be giving her a wonderful adventure, memories, and a bonding experience that an electronic devise could never do.

Encourage imagination, hers, not an electronic version of another.

I was an avid reader as a kid; had Kindle or Nook been invented already, I would have loved  to have one. What a great gift idea!
