OK, I really miss not having a clothes line. My mom never owned a dryer, so the smell of fresh, clean, air dried clothes ignites pleasant memories.

Lately, though, I have noticed some of the things that come off the clothes in the dryer, besides just lint. Cat hairs, guinea pig hairs, and such. I realized that if I had a clothes line, all these things would still be on the clothes. YICK!!!:scared1:

I'll keep my dryer.:)

:rotfl: But they would be fresh, clean, air dried cat hairs and guinea pig hairs...

I'm keeping my dryer and my clothes line. Choice is so nice! I too remember when there was no dryer and if it rained, we had clothesline run all over the basement.

No clothesline here due to covenents but I have the Maytag dryer that has the cabinet for hang drying and flat drying. What I usually find in the dryer (not necessarily the lint trap though due to it's placement) is flossers, gum paper, candy paper, and my personal favorite: melted chap stick!

Oh yes, the wonderful mess of melted chapstick! I once found a partially melted green crayon in the lint trap once.

Where was the rest you ask? Well it was melted all over DH's underwear of course! Nothing else in the dryer got crayon on it! :lmao: DH wore green spotted underwear for a long time after that!

pennies, hair ties, small toys...

I hate line dried clothes anyhow because they feel stiff and rough to me. But with the amount of dog hair the lint trap takes off ours, I'm definitely sticking to the dryer for that reason too.

Ninetendo DS games, paper money (found a $10 bill in there yesterday!), shredded paper from notes the kids were suppposed to give me from school...and of course a little bit of dog hair....the boxer doesn't shed that much...thank goodness!!

Oh....I like line dried clothes. It reminds me of my sister! She doesn't use any kind of fabric softener so whenever we go visit, it's an automatic exfoliator when you dry off after the shower!! Her towels are the roughest I have ever felt!!! Worse than any hotel you've ever been too!!! I told her last time we were there that I didn't need a pumice stone for my feet, just bring me a towel!!

Aaaahhh, the wonderful shredded paper. You can usually find me hunched over the washer, with tiny pieces of papers scattered about, trying to piece the sucker together, to see what note I am missing.

:lmao: about you sisters towels. I actually HATE soft towels, the water just rolls off. At least the rough towels absorb the water.

My soft fluffy towels absorb water just great! But then I don't use fabric softener or dryer sheets, and I've heard that those can cause your towels to be less absorbent.

I'd forgotten about the shredded notes. I get a lot of those too.

Better than shredded paper......shredded Kleenex during the winter all over dark sweaters! I swear I could beat my kids for that. I do have to admit that I was guilty once of washing and drying a tube of lipstick, even nastier than chap stick!

Things I learned from using cloth diapers.

Fabric softeners coat the fabric, and do indeed make them less absorbent.

"Whiteners" in most of today's laundry detergents are actually a chemical that coats the fibers and sort of "reflects" the light back, making things look whiter and brighter (doesn't clean them any differently). Studies at the colleges with fiber programs (one out in South Caroline escapes my mind, as does the proper name for the course of study***) have actually weighed fabrics washed routinely in detergent with whitener, and the fabric becomes (slightly) heavier with continued use of the whitener detergents.

Whiteners, too, decrease absorbency.

To soften things, vinegar in the last rinse can be very helpful, and doesn't make things smell of easter egg dye. :)

As for lint traps vs line drying, I would imagine the stuff left over on the clothes would be blown off by the breeze. BUT who knows what else might be blown ONTO the clothes? I grew up with clothes lines and want to be loyal to them, but then I started thinking about what's in the breeze and I decided that it was a bit too bleah for me. :)

***textiles! that's the word for the course of study. not fiber, textiles!

I definitely find all that cat hair.. ick.

Often I'll find DF's nametag for work rolling around in the dryer (it's a magnetic one). He neeeever remembers it.

And I find the collar stays ALL the time. Occasionally loose change... a lot of paper pieces.

Guess it's pretty usual.
