First I have to thank everyone for all the great input I received here in the months leading up to our recent 4-day cruise; your help was invaluable, especially since this was our first cruise ever! We had the time of our lives.
Even after months of "study" on the DIS, there were still some things that surprised me during our cruise. I will share just a few:
1. The absolute perfection of our servers. We were thoroughly
dazzled by our servers, Gane from Macedonia and Noel
from the Philippines. There were four of us with three
courses each per night for four nights, plus a variety of
beverages, and not ONCE did the servers make a mistake.
And they were wonderfully friendly and smiling, and
extremely patient with our small children. I had expected
great service, but these servers were simply fabulous.
2. Lots of motion on the ship. This was mainly just the first
night, and it wasn't enough to make us feel ill, but it was
disconcerting till I got used to it and it became kind of fun. DH, who recently returned from many
months at sea with the Navy, kept commenting on how
surprised he was by how much the Wonder was rocking.
Another surprise was how long I still "felt" the rocking
after we were back on land, at least a couple of days.
3. The complete silence in our stateroom. We were in 6514 and
did not hear a sound; it was almost too quiet to sleep! Next
time I will take a white noise machine, not to drown noises
out but to create a little background noise since that's what
we're used to at home.
4. The strength of the Bahamian sun. Thankfully we sunblocked
religiously at Casaway Cay, and reapplied faithfully, but we
came away with a few painfully burned spots that we'd
missed.
5. The fun of shopping in Nassau. I had expected to be faced
with overaggressive salespeople in Nassau and wasn't
really looking forward to shopping there, but we had a great
time! We didn't buy much but had lots of fun looking around,
and we found nearly all the vendors to be friendly and not
at all pushy. The aisles of the straw market were narrow
for our two umbrella strollers but we managed and the kids
had fun picking out souvenirs there. We just spent a couple
of hours in Nassau since we wanted to enjoy some time on
the ship that day but we really enjoyed that Nassau morning.
All in all we were just amazed by the whole cruise. DH and I decided it felt like a huge elaborate wonderful show was being put on just for us. Everything was seamless. I hadn't been too happy with the idea of a cruise when DH suggested it several months ago but I am so glad we decided to do it (thanks in a large part to the encouragement of this board!). Now I'm already dreaming of a future DCL cruise!
