There seems to be a trend.
I pay to have something fixed. I research. Don't always pick the cheapest. I get referrals.
It's not fixed the first time.
It takes several visits to fix.
I don't have to pay for subsequent visits but it takes my time. It's like someone does a sloppy job and I get to test it to see if it's ok. I used to be a programmer and I hate the mentality that some programmers had. They'd slap something together to say it's done knowing full well it hadn't been tested and there would be problems. They let someone else debug and then they'd fix it.
Why? Are people not as skilled as they once were? Are people in too much of a hurry? Are appliances/cars so complicated these days that noone can get it right the first time? Is it a lack of work ethic and pride in your work?
Example 1:
I have a Whirlpool Conquest refrigerator. The icemaker broke. Three visits later the ice maker was fixed. In total four visits. 1 to figure out what's wrong and order the part and the rest in an attempt to fix it.
Example 2:
I have a Toyota Avalon. The ABS and VCS light came on. It's under warrenty. I've taken it to Toyota dealership six times. I got it back yesterday, took my son out to dinner and guess what light came on. The dealership has been great. They've begun bringing me a rental to my home and picking up my car. They've done $3500 worth of work and still it's not fixed. I'm not paying for it but someone is.
Example 3:
Air Conditioner breaks:
Visit one: Fill with coolant
Visit two: Obviously there's a leak because $150 worth of coolant is gone
in two days. Discovers the coil needs to be changed. Orders part
Visit three: Replaces coil
Visit four: House cools for about 3 days and stops
Visit five: Discovers compressor is out. Need to order new airconditioner
Visit six: replaces air conditioner
This took approximately 5 weeks from start to finish. I said from the beginning that the unit that cools the main floor in the house was 30 years old. If we had to replace it we would.
