I asked DH if he needed stamps, and he told me that they just write free on it.
Of course, I haven't received any mail from him yet, so I am not sure if he heard wrong. Does anyone know before I mail his next package out?

Thanks,
Melanie

The marine moms website and I think also operation military pride said that GIs can mail a letter without paying postage but they need postage to mail a package. I hope that's right because I sent envelopes addressed to me in each package.

DH said that's the way it was when he was in the Gulf War. He could mail letters to me for free, but he had to pay to send me packages.

I believe that is the case. Also anyone with an APO or FPO address (like myself) can send free of charge, letters and or packages and vice versa to another APO or FPO address.

My brother sent me letters while he was in the gulf war & he wrote 'free' on it. He's so very 'frugal' that I thought he was trying to pull a fast one. LOL But he later explained that they could send letters for free.

While stateside during the Gulf War, DH sent me letters for free. He sent a box that he had to pay to send though. When I returned to Europe and used my APO address, I was free too.
I still have a big pile of letters, wrapped in a yellow ribbon, that DH sent during those 5 months. He still has mine. :D

Don't know if this will help you or not. My SIL whose husband is with the 101st reported that spouses whose deployed soliders use stamps on their letters instead of "free mail" are getting those letters faster. The difference appears to be approximately a week or two. It may be that the volume of "Free mail" is such that it is just taking longer to process. That may change as time goes on but for now that is what her spouses in the FRG are reporting. SIL sent her DH stamps to use ;)

Thanks everyone.

When he said that to me it sounded so strange!!
I like the idea of addressing them. I will address some for him in my next package

Thanks,
Melanie
