We checked into OKW on Jan 1. We spent the night at CBR (which was very nice, by the way) and while my husband was putting in 8 miles of running, I decided to go ahead and check into OKW for us. Kind of trying to get our room early if possible.

Well, our room wasn't available until 4:30PM. Or at least that's what they told us on the phone. We went over to move into the villa and found housekeeping frantically trying to clean the villa since it was a mess, champagne bottles outside the room, trash all over the place. The housekeeper told us the previous guests had just left a little after 4PM. Which was about the time we called to see if the room was ready and the CM said it wasn't, but she would put a rush on it since it should have been ready.

Needless to say, we were a bit upset, mostly because someone else thought they didn't have to leave OUR room. We found out that at OKW alone, there were about 5 villas that the guests did not move out of at 11AM as required. They left to go to the parks with their stuff all over the room or failed to respond to calls and knocks on the doors because they were hung over or just plain rude.

The housekeepers were great, did a wonderful job (THANKS, Sheridan!!!! You've already been mentioned to the manager.) And we were finally able to get into the room by 5:30. I spoke with the manager, Carl, who told me that these rude people (all 5 villas) were charged for an extra night because they didn't leave. If they were members, I wish they would be fined or something. If they were renters, they shouldn't be allowed to rent again. If they purchased the reservation through CRO, they should also not be allowed to rent a DVC villa again.

Carl was very nice when I spoke with him. He offered to purchase our dinner that we had shortly before I spoke with him and I accepted that.

But I just can't get over slobs who are so inconsiderate of the incoming guests. What should be done to people who refuse to vacate the villa as required?

The rude squatters should be required to pay for your first night.

They need to be charged for it. I wonder if Disney will have to start putting this on check-in info. They have added the info about how trash and towel works on a points stay. I even saw the trash and towel info printed on a little card thingy in one of the DVC rooms the last time we stayed.

We ALWAYS vacate when we are supposed to, whether staying on cash or points.

If they charged the previous guest extra for not leaving the room on time (which I'm glad they did), it would have been nice is they passed some of that on to you - such as a partial refund on points for that night's stay.

I'm glad you mentioned to the manager the great work that the housekeeper did. They are the unsing heroes of Disney - lots of work for little pay and little thanks.

Could the owner be charged for their extra time?
Could they really be banned?
Is there aA DVC policy on this?

I am still a new owner and don't know how this would work.

I would bet the late leavers were CRO cash guests, given that NYE was a saturday night. Maybe owners that rent points should put something in the contract...like "renter agrees to pay an additional deposit of $xxx, if renter leaves resort late and points are charged back to the owner, the deposit is forfeit...if no points are charged back the deposit amount will be returned to the renter."

gee that is upsetting!!!

some people are just rude.

they should have reserved it another night - if they were going to doing in the NY.....

Oh well I am jealous - as long as I work I can't go in Jan or Feb for that matter.

So have fun for me!!!

DVC has put it on several places. You even have to sign something saying that you understand the check out is 11:00am - not 4:00pm.....

they definitely want you to understand check out time.

This is terrible. And if Disney charged them for the extra time, it is you they should be passing the cash to. It was you who had lost time after all - Disney were still getting paid! I would write to complain. Sometimes people can't help being a few minutes late checking out - but several hours is ridiculous.

Perhaps they should have it in writing when you check in-"Check out time is 11:00 am. DVC reserves the right to [insert consequence here, be it charge extra, ban, etc.] to those guests who stay after 11:00 without prior written approval", sort of like the contract in school for unruly students. Sorry for suggesting something juvenile, but IMHO these guests were acting juvenile so....

Not to be negative but they did get in at 5:30 so only an hour past what check in time is yes it is an inconveniaence that they were waiting the extra time and the manager at the resort paid for thier dinner. The people paying for the additional night had no reason to stay later than is allowed and by doing so paid Disney for the extra day and that is how it should be it shouldn't be passed on to the members or next guest at all that is how I feel anyhow.

I think its SOP to charge guests an extra day if they check out late. As long as that money goes to the DVC membership funds and decreases my maintenance fees that seems fine to me.

We stayed at Marriott's Barony Beach at Hilton Head over New Years. They listed a policy of either $150 or $250 per two hour period for late checkouts. A lot of timeshares have gone to this policy. Charging a large amount per hour or two hours over checkout time. It makes sense. Why should the owners or members pay extra for housekeepers to sit around waiting for someone to leave past the checkout time? DVC should do the same.

If you are staying more than one week, Marriott will allow you to stay in the first week's unit until the second one is ready, even if it's after 4 pm.

I find this highly unlikely. More likely they had just gotten around to it or had forgotten about it until someone checked up on the room and they lied to place the blame elsewhere. By law they could charge them for an extra full day and Disney has plenty of security if they are needed for this type of thing.

I actually believe it and the sad part... they were probably members who got there at 8 AM and wanted their room NOW!!! I travel a lot and unfortunately DVC members can at times be their own worst enemies. I have seen LOTS of DVC members not leaving thier rooms until WELL after the "offiical" check out time. (Some have even posted here!)

I checked out once at 9 pm which threw Disney into a tizzy. (I had to leave and had kept the room and paid for the night so I just stayed until the last minute.) However, there was a woman asking the guy at the counter next to me how she could get a late check out like me!

Who knows who they were? They were rude and selfish people, but those aren't traits held exclusively by DVC members. Maybe they were members, maybe they weren't. We have no way of knowing, do we?

Dean,

I think it is great that Marriott will let you stay in the room until the next one is ready. There was no mention of this in the paperwork we received. A lot of timeshares we have visited lately has the clause about the extra charge for late checkouts.

It would be intersting to see if a late check-out was really the cause or just late cleaning for whatever reason and a convenient excuse. It is easier to blame someone else then to admit an error.

On Thanksgiving Day, '04, we checked into BWV around 2ish. We knew our villa wouldn't be ready, so went off to MGM for a few hours. When we got back we were told our room was ready. When we got to the room, it was in a horrible area. We had booked preferred, but with this particular room we could see basically onto the balcony that was at a 90 degree angle from us. You could see only the top of the trees in front of you. So, we asked if we could possible change rooms. No problem they said. They said that room had had complaints about it's being regarded as preferred before. So, they gave us new room keys and off we went. Well, it is now about 4:35 or so. When we opened the door into the new room, we found it to be still occupied!! Toys and clothes everywhere! We went back to the lobby, talked to the poor folks at the front desk. Alfredo, the manager, went back upstairs with us to see for himself. He said the computer showed that unit as empty and cleaned, ready for the next member. Yep, he found it to be occupied. But this time the people were actually in the room. They told him that they had decided to spend another night or two!!! My question? Why/how did that unit show up as cleaned and ready?? I guess Alfredo had the same question. We were given a credit on our acct and yet another room.
It amazes that some people think they can just do whatever they want to do, without worrying about the impact it may have on others.

The rude guests probably returned AFTER the maids had already cleaned their room. Wonder if it was really their room...hmmmm?

But would the housekeeping staff have cleaned a room that was obviously still occupied? I would think that they would notify management that the current occupants had not left and they couldn't clean the room for the next family.
