There are a lot that drive me batty, but "nucular" is real high on the list. You'd think the President could learn to pronounce that.
"Libary, jewlery, UMbrella, Illinoize" all drive me a little up the wall.
But I'm very fond of saying, "Idunno" for "I don't know", blurring it all together, which has always driven my mother (and probably others, as well) kind of nuts. I also say "kinda" instead of "kind of."
The thing that drives me the most batty, though, is the superfluous "at."
"Where is it at?" and "Where are you at?" Those sentences don't need ATs!!! You might as well say, "Where is it down?" or "Where are you upon?"
"Where is it?" is a complete sentence at. "Where is it at?" is moronic at.
My kids all do this at. They sound like idiots at.![]()
I don't know if it is a regional thing, but TONS of people around here do it at. I see it on these boards a great deal, as well. At.
I believe this is regional and depends on the native speakers of the state. In WI and MN, it was mostly German and Scandanavian native speakers, and when their language was translated into English, that's how they spoke...because that's how it was spoken in their native language.
The placement of the words was different, so that's how they translated into their "new" language ~literally, which is why you find those differences.
