There is no such thing as a half-day park

I see a lot of posts stating HS and AK are half-day parks. Those statements are terribly misleading for those that have never been to Disney and are not familiar with what those parks have to offer. I hope everyone that reads those types of statements understand that such comments are simply opinions of specific posters and not actually reality. Honestly, there is enough to do two days at each of those parks and not repeat.

Those that only do half-days are skipping a lot, and not because it’s not worth doing. In many cases, it’s because they are Disney veterans and simply choose to do something else. But, everyone’s perspective should be determined by their own experiences, and not someone else.

Sure, if you only have 3 park days, you can’t devote a full day to everything, but I’m talking about visits of 5 days or more. Consider the following things, which people that only do the headliners have to be skipping, in order to get it ‘done’ in a half-day.

Hollywood Studios has a ton of characters, many of them unique to that park (Phineas & Ferb, Sofia the First, Wreck-It Ralph, Green Army Men, Buzz & Woody together, etc.). And, then there is Characterpalooza. You could do almost a full day on characters alone at HS.

HS also has a lot of shows with specific schedules that make it tough to get them all done in a day. For the most part, these shows are must-do for the first time visitor. Even repeat visitors can get a new experience. Last year, after 6 visits in the last 7 years, I finally got to be an extra in the Indiana Jones show. That is an experience I’ll remember forever.

Like HS, AK has a lot of shows and some unique characters (Pocohontas, Baloo, Rafiki, etc.). Combined with shorter park hours, and long attractions such as the Safari and the walking Trails, make it almost impossible to do it all in a single day. We spent two days of about seven hours each there last October (park closure at 5) and did not duplicate a single thing.

Animal Kingdom also has some unique activities such as Rafiki’s planet and the Wilderness Explorer Adventure. My kids (7 & 9) loved the Wilderness Explorer activity (and my wife and I had fun with it as well). Here’s the thing though. It took us the full two days to collect all of the badges. I realize not everyone can devote two days to a park, but my point is that AK is NOT in any way a half-day park if you want the full experience (P.S. – a good zoo at home is not even remotely the same thing).

Bottom line is that posters who say that this park, or that park, are only half days should qualify the reasons they think that way. And, people who are visiting Disney for the first time should experience everything they possibly can and make their own decisions versus assuming someone’s opinion is fact (and that includes mine).

Experienced AK for first time a long time ago--- and it was and still IS a 1/2 day park. PERIOD. (FOR ME)

AND it's a 2 day park FOR YOU. Quantify your statements also ;)

I agree with the OP as we spent open to close there with our DD who was 5 at the time.

The issue is that Disney sees it as a half day park as it closes earlier than any other park. When we go this August AK closes at 6pm and that is the latest of all the days we will be there. HS and Epcot close at 9 and MK at 11. So its 3-5 hours earlier than any other park.

The experience varies for each group. For my family DHS is certainly a full day park. Between the attractions, shows, and dining there is lots for us to do. AK on the other hand is a half day experience at most. Our last few trips we have not had park hoppers so have skipped AK and not missed it a bit. For us, it is woefully short on attractions. However I do see how some folks can stretch it out and piddle around there for a whole day or more.

Animal Kingdom has been a half day park since our first visit.

I agree 100%.

DHS is tough to manage in a day if you really want to experience all it has to offer. AK can be done in a day IMO. Half day? No way. Unless you skip half the park.

IMO DHS is especially underrated by many WDW vets. AK is underrated too but not as much. I often need to spend at least a day and a half at DHS. Epcot has some unique and cool things but is overrated.

I did qualify by discussing seeing all of the characters, doing all the shows, riding all the rides, watching the parade (which is now gone) and doing all the other activities (trails, Rafiki's Planet, Wilderness Badges, etc.)

My point is that people who only do a half day are skipping much of that. Nothing wrong with that as a personal preference, but first time visitors should understand that it's a choice and not actually the way things truly are.

We always go to WDW and stay for 7-8 nights. *Every* park is a "half-day" parks as we NEVER stay at one park for a whole day. Always one park in the morning and another at night. A water Park for the first half of the day followed with a theme park for the rest of the day. All four parks are hit multiple times during the week. I wish I was there now!

Because we usually go in October when AK closes at 5, we almost always hop over to MK at night. And, we also hop quite a bit between HS and Epcot (for the food & wine festival).

AK and DHS are, to me, half day parks. Yes, there are things I skip, but I doubt there is anyone out there who wants to do every single thing in either park. These parks have been half day parks since my first visit. And my experience and opinion is just as valid as any other.

I also think it depends on the age/sizes of the people in your party. For us being with a 37 inch child eliminates many attractions at AK and Epcot. Essentially AK will be Character breakfast, safari, walking trail, done. Not only is AK a half day park for us, we aren't even wasting our FP+ on them.

However given his interests and loves HS is a full day park for us and we'll likely swing over another day for another round of Pixar fun.

Epcot has many of the same restrictions for him and I don't see him finding the different countries too interesting. This is the back half of our AK day.

That's ok. While you are meeting characters, my family of 12 and older thrill seekers is riding the rides and getting in AK and out in half a day. Sure, I could meander around a while, but we are commando ride for the thrills kind of family.

The variety at Disney for many ages and stages is what keeps so many coming back.

I completely agree that DHS and AK are not half day parks!! If you want to do just headliners.... you can do it in half a day or less but if you want to stick around there is more than enough things to fill your day!!

Agree 100%! I would love it if people would generally ask friends what kind of things they like or what kind of park-goers they think they'll be before giving a blanket "you need 2-3 MK days, 2 Epcot days and 1/2 each at DHS and AK", which I think people do often. I think for many types of groups, they can do all ,*they* want in 1/2 day, but that's not to say there isn't plenty of quality stuff to do to fill a day if you like a wide variety of attractions.

Nobody has said that one opinion vs the other is less valid... The argument here is just that they are both opinions and the half dayers need to express it more as an opinion than fact... I have done a half day and whole day and each has there ups and downs... You half dayers relax and maybe a walk thru the jungle might be just what u need :)

Everyone has different tastes and likes so what may be a 1/2 day for one is a full day for another. Personally, I love AK and will spend most of a day there, usually until 4 or 5pm. I do like to take my time on the trails and so Safari and EE twice, although with FP+, that may not be so easy. I take in all 3 shows and I like to take my time to look at all the details. This is one park where I stop rushing after the first hour. My last trip I went with brother and is wife. They were done with AK in 3-4 hrs and she was not even interested in the world showcase. I went solo for a couple of days and thoroughly loved it!

I also agree with the OP. I can certainly find enough to do to spend a full day at both parks between riding the rides more than once and seeing all the shows. We usually go for awhile in the morning, go back to the hotel for a bit and then go back. And once Avatarland opens, AK will definitely be an all-dayer! :) I do think that HS needs a couple of new attractions though.

So, if a friend or co-worker asked your advice on AK, would you respond with...

"We only spend a half day there."

or

"We only spend a half day there, but we don't take time to see any characters, watch any of the shows, walk any of the trails, or do any of the special activities. All we do is the rides. If you did that other stuff, you would need a lot more time."

See the difference?

Like a PP, all parks are half day parks to me. We go in the morning to one park, go back for a rest, then out to another park at night. But I do get my hours in after all during my 6 or 7 day trip. I want to spend more time at EPCOT IN WS during my next trip.:thumbsup2

It is a good post for new visitors. While some agree or disagree knowing that there might be more to them than some suggest is good.
