Please, can we please, please use these words correctly?

Then tells order: I went to the store, then I went to the bank.

Than is a comparison word: My flight will be arriving later than yours.

I cannot even begin to tell you how many posts I have read today where then is used where it should have been than.

What about of and have?

I hate it when someone says "I should of done this" instead of "I should have done this".

If that is your biggest complaint in life, grammar, than you lead a good life!:goodvibes How's that?!

...or the word D E F I N I T E L Y

(NOT definATEly)

Even my daughter's teacher spelled this word incorrectly...EEK!

What I don't understand is people using the wrong word or misspelled word in the title of a post and leaving it that way. Hey, you CAN edit and correct it.

Have to agree......

Although I'm sure I'm guilty.:rotfl:
This Dis is supposed to be fun. If I was writing my thesis I would be concerned.

My 6yo DS's teacher sent a back to school letter in the mail last week.

She used the word "there" instead of "their"

The ones I see most often here (really a lot here) and other boards are:

your and you're

"If your going to Disney..."

One even said something like:

"If your/I] going to school..." :)

And their,they're and there

"Really, their going to Disney..."

But more than half the posts on these boards would warrant comment for grammar, so it's (its  ) best to let them go.

Cheers.

Aggghhh These two bug me the most, I try to ignore them tough as I'm the worlds worst speller and hope people overlook that.

My favorite one recently was someone who said they were "soak and wet"
Really? soak and wet?

i can handle bad grammar most of the time. the thing that annoys me the most is when people say "expecially"

The one I've been seeing often on here is "weary" instead of "wary". It drives me crazy! I know it could easily be a typo, but I suspect many people just don't realize they are using the wrong word. They are not "weary" of the stranger following them in the grocery, they are "wary" of him. Well actually I guess they could also be weary of being followed by the guy if he has been shadowing them for a long time, but somehow I suspect that isn't what they were trying to say.

Also I hate it when someone says "Mute point" when they mean "Moot point" - it irks me every time I see that.

Basically, typos don't bother me much but it really bothers me when it someone uses the wrong word entirely for what they are trying to say.

Is it really that important? This is a message board - not a classroom.. We're not being graded here (and if we are, we shouldn't be).. It's a fun place to chat - nothing more..:upsidedow

Inasmuch as this is a separate thread, no one is being graded. Besides, there are many, many threads on much more arcane topics.

I do think, though, that literacy levels are pretty bad. If people read a thread like this and it makes them think about what they write (and look up/learn proper grammar) that can't be a bad thing. The writing here, in particular, and in other boards I read is atrocious.

It's not a classroom; it's also not unreasonable to expect people to be able to write properly.

Cheers.

Some would consider the above improper grammar:rotfl:

Look on the bright side.. Posters could be using "text" lingo..;)

When people post here, I think the mind set is more along the lines of "talking" to someone - not writing/typing a message.. When I "talk" to people, I don't ask them to stop and spell each word of their sentence - so I certainly don't expect it here - where people are simply "chatting"..:goodvibes

Of course that's only my opinion - which I realize may differ from others..:upsidedow
