My best Disney tip after having our room burglarized at All Star Movies is to lock up as much as you can, especially medications. If they don't all fit in the room safe - take them to the front desk and have them locked up. While your room is being cleaned it is completely open to strangers passing by when the maids leave the hotel lock latch open in multiple rooms. Also, I will never again stay at a resort that doesn't have indoor corridors where the number of people passing by is somewhat more limited. Never again do I want to lose all my expensive life necessary medications because of a maid using the lock latch to leave multiple rooms open and even opening adjoining rooms not in your party and keeping the lock latch open while working in another room alltogether so that your room is open to anyone passing by(observed multiple times on multiple trips). It might not happen often enough for everyone to know about but it does happen more often than you think.

Cheryl,

I am so sorry that this happened to you. There are some sick people out there who do things like this. Unfortunately, I really doubt that Disney will do anything more for you and mostly because they are no legally responsible. You would think for the sake of a good image they would be more helpful but, let's face it, at the end of the day Walt Disney World Resorts is a company. I don't know whether or not it was the maid's fault but that is something that you will not be able to prove. Again, this is unfortunate and I'm not sure if there is any further action you can take.

Yep, you are right on the nose there. And thank you for a really reasonable reply, even if you might not agree with everything I might have said.
Love, Cheryl

I know this won't make you feel better, but we were robbed when we had an open house with a realtor to sell our house. They took medications right from our medicine cabinet. There are so many rotten people out there, even at WDW. I don't trust anyone I don't know.

Wow! That is terrible. I am so sorry that someone would do that to you. Did the open house pay off anyway? Hope so, to make up for your loss. Thankfullyly most of my meds were at the end of their month and were up for a refill within the next couple of weeks. I finally got some of them in the mail today.

So sorry this happened to you! I think you give good advice about locking your stuff up. Alot of people, including me in the past, have just trusted the Disney name and think nothing bad will happen there.

I use to leave all kinds of stuff not locked up. I have gotten wiser. We only stay deluxe because we love indoor corridors(and other reasons). Also, at DVC your room isn't cleaned if you are there less then a week. The housekeeping comes in once during the stay just to change the towels and take trash. I actually like this because I do not like the idea of people being in the room when I'm not there. I have seen in many resorts numerous doors wide open and housekeeping in just one. There are alot of mean, rotten people out there, even at Disney and this is a good reminder for people to take caution. This is also why I do not bring any jewlery on vacation other then my "everyday" wedding band that never comes off!

Do you think visitors are stealing from rooms or locals. You can go to DD and then get on buses to go to any resorts, or do you need your room key to get on the busses.

I finally had to ask the Moderator to take down my post because I was getting personally bashed by so many of the lovely DIS folks, one even accused me, in at least 3-4 separate posts of lying about it to make money from WDW and my insurance co, accused my teenagers of taking it for personal enjoyment and accused the other family members who were on the trip with me!l

Cheryl, I think it is very unfair for you to ask for a post to be taken down and then continue to debate your side of the argument. That way, the only side that people get to see is yours. I read your entire thread on the Resorts Board and a lot of what you are saying here is your perception. These "accusations" that you say happened were not so apparent to me.

Just a question about security. Seems to me there are cameras everywhere at WDW. Don't they have cameras in the corridors? Wouldn't that show who was in and out of the room? Did you fill out a police report?

Sorry I don't think I was debating my side of the argument here - just reminding folks to lock it up.

Plus, what you don't know is that I was getting a lot of private messages making terrible accusations and saying some pretty mean stuff. Sorry Hippychickali, if I upset you. I see from your profile that you are a Student Minister so I will ask that you pray for me.

Cheryl, what kind of idiot would accuse you of lying about something like this! Also thanks. I always lock our money in the safe but never our meds and we have alot with a "crazy mom" (me) an autistic son and an ADHD son. I will lock them up this trip now that you posted.

Glad you will. Something that you and I might not have previously realized was valuable to others - is. Lock up all you can, cause you never know. All Star Movies was where we stayed this last time too, so have a good time but wisely lock up those precious medications.

I hope you have a great trip (wow just a short time too!). Does your son love going to WDW? While we were there a group of Downs Syndrome children were on a trip and it was so wonderful to see their happiness and joy,not just in the characters and the magic of WDW, but just in being around others who were happy and joyful! I think that's part of the WDW magic - that you share your happiness with so many others, as if this were a delightful version of utopia where everyone had the same goals and aspirations, wanted the best for each other and were able to get in touch with that deep down heartfelt love sometimes seen only in children. Going to WDW is almost a religious experience for me (minus the unfortunate incident on this last trip!)

Have a great trip.

My daughter is studying to be a doctor of Pharmacy. She does talk about how the meds have to under lock and key at the hospital. I guess I just never realized anyone would steal individual medications. They are so personal and prescribed just for your illness. So weird that anyone else would want to use them or sell them or whatever they do with somebody else's meds.
I do appreciate your warning. I really think you should report any bad e-mails you got, to this board administrator. It is not right that you tried to help us to be safer, and got knocked down for it.
We are staying at really nice hotels this trip for Christmas, so we're sure to have a safe. I will lock our meds up. With 3 adults and 1 teen, we have all kinds of allergy meds. and antibiotics with the bad winters in Iowa! :guilty:
Again I appreciate you caring about others in the "Dis" Board family, and sorry for people with stinky attitudes. Unbelievable! :smooth:
Pomcoach :cheer2:

You know how people say there is always one bad apple in the bunch. Well sometimes there are more. Thanks for the info, will use it on our next trip. We too lock up are money and plane tickets but never thought of meds. Thanks,

People were PMing you?

Aw, man. I'm sorry to hear that... It takes all kinds, eh? That's one element of boards like this which has always left a bad taste in my mouth.

Snippy know it alls.

The housekeeping comes in once during the stay just to change the towels and take trash. I actually like this because I do not like the idea of people being in the room when I'm not there.

The staff might still enter the rooms, even though no housekeeping is scheduled. Someone came into my OKW room almost daily last September to leave flyers about the approach of Hurricane Frances. I'd have preferred that they stick them under the door.

We were there during Frances at the WL and they did stick the flyers under the door. Only ones that came in the room was mousekeeping.

Honestly, I think allergy medicines and antibiotics are safe--unless someone just darts in and grabs up all the meds they can find hoping some will have a significant "street value". In general I suspect they are looking for controlled substances, such as pain meds and stimulants like Ritalin. Some of these can't be replaced easily even if you're willing to pay out-of-pocket as they require an actual handwritten paper prescription--no faxes, no phone-in refills!! With the price on prescription drugs these days, though, some of my allergy and asthmas meds are actually worth more than my pain meds, muscle relaxants, anxiety meds, and Ritalin! :earseek: Obviously another "crazy mom" here!

Thanks for the advice. :flower: In all my many travels I have never locked up my medications. I will this time!!

How big are the safes at POR? Obviously things such as jewelry, money, laptop computers, cameras, and other electronics need to be put away as well.

Lisa :D

When there are thefts in hotels....who would think that they would take your medications. My DH is on several medications........thanks for the info, I will keep it under lock and key.
