Theft at Disney

disney david, I think maxiesmom was referring to the person you were quoting, OrlandoUnited. OrlandoUnited asked, "Was this at Pop Century?" He/she could have had many reasons for asking. Perhaps he/she saw police there, or someone shady running thru the parking lot and speeding away.
I did in fact see police in the lobby of Pop as well as walking around the 80s/90s buildings on Tuesday of last week.
To imply OrlandoUnited was dissing value resorts was making assumptions out of nothing.

Thank you. I have stayed at the value resorts many times. The All Stars, particularly, are very close to high crime areas in Kissimmee and I have witnessed many times people at those resorts that are not guests.

It seems like everyone out here is looking for motives to spread hatred sometimes.

I'm sorry if I jumped to a wrong conclusion. But you must admit, that given your rather strong comments on the other thread about value resorts, that it was an easy jump to make. I went and re-read those posts, and you said that that bad service was what that poster got for staying at a value resort, and that they were lucky their purse wasn't stolen. Doesn't sound like someone who likes the value resorts overmuch. I figured you were here for another round of value resort bashing.

Thank You for posting this. Yes, we do tend to let our guard down when we are on vacation. We are leaving this weekend for WDW, and it's a good reminder to be watchful of our belongings.

Sorry your daughter had this happen to her, and I hope they catch the person(s) responsible.

As the crow flies, it's close to 192. I'm not sure that 192 is a "high crime" area for Kissimmee vs., say, east of Poinciana. Having stayed in a few of the developments just off of Old Lake Wilson, right around there, I would not describe them as "unsafe". I'm also not sure how you could tell someone was "not a guest".

But, let's take as a given that that section of 192 *is* a "high crime" area, and you *can* spot "not guests". Even so, getting to the All Stars is no easier than getting to any one of a number of other resorts from any WDW entrance road. Or are you suggesting that criminals prefer to bushwhack from a very pedestrian-unfriendly section of 192?

It seems like everyone out here is looking for motives to spread hatred sometimes.

Quoted for (unintentional?) irony.

i think it was at all stars resort since it the Osceola county sheriff who was called pop would of got the orange county sheriff. Just remember this could happen at any hotel not just disney owned.

Not sure that the OP will be able to confirm since she expressed not giving too many details, but based on some of her posts on other threads, I don't think this happened at Pop or any Value resort.

As a PP mentioned, theft, or any unfortunate situation/occurrence can happen at any resort.

I know the only resort that in that county is all stars as pp mention Osceola county sheriff as the police department. All of the other disney resort are in orange county. Which is a different police department they are called the Orange county sheriff department. Except for all star resorts and ESPN wide world of sports which are in Osceola county. My point was that it could only be one resort either All Stars being the police department that was mention.

Just checked the only resort owned by Disney in Osceola County is the All Stars they are the only one that would get Osceola County sheriff to respond.

I'm 99% sure that DAKL and AKV are in Osceola as well. :confused3

So how, per se, are we assuming that proxemity to a "bad area" means more likely for crime? If security does their job at the resort entrances, there shouldn't be anyone shady getting in. They'd also have video recording of all cars coming and going. The next option is buses- a criminal would either have to pay for parking at a theme park then hop a bus, or park free at DTD. All Stars and DAKL are about as far from DTD as you can get, so that wouldn't be practical. Plus they could only carry what they can put in a backpack or pockets. I honestly don't think proximity to Kissimmee is a big motivator.

I've also never seen an ECV left outside at a resort without interior hallways. However, it may happen. I see it more often left in a hallway.

i might be wrong i was looking on the kissimmee web site but may be it in another city that in Osceola count. well their only two resorts that it could be at well i hope they catch the ones who stole your things.

How awful!!!! For those of you with iPhones... there is a paid app you can download that is a GPS tracker for your phone. Then if it gets lost or stolen, you can go on the web site from a computer and track it. My sister had it, I have not bought it yet. Not sure how well it works, how accurate it is, etc. but may be worth looking into for some!

It is FREE! This is the 2nd post I saw this week saying it was a pay app or a pay service.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-iphone/id376101648?mt=8

It used to be part of paid MobileMe subscriptions, but now it is free - works on iPhones, and also iPads and iPods provided they have a wireless or 3G signal.

Yes AKL is in Osceola county.

I am so sorry you had to deal with that on your vacation. It's a horrible thing that someone would do that, especially at Disney. But it is just a reminder that things like that can happen even at the most magical place on earth.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I do hope your daughter can recover some of her items.

Thanks for posting the reminder for the rest of us!!

Sorry to hear this happened to your daughter. With all the talk about values not being as safe as other resort hotels (I disagree with this idea, I think all have the same safety level) this is a good reason for Disney to get those electronic id braclets working for dining, room keys, etc. Then people without these bracelets that continue to be around the resorts could be questioned.

I know I may be jumping to conclusions but if it IS BWV,their security really needs to step it up a notch.
BWV was the same resort I stayed at last year where we kept getting those flyers for bogus pizza delivery places. If you call and give your credit card number you don't get a pizza; you get your credit card number stolen!
Orlando Police put a warning out to tourist to NOT call any numbers on flyers left under your room door. All the resorts need to keep an eye out and chase these guys off their properties.
We will be staying at BWV and AKV next month and I will be extra careful this time around.
Thanks OP for sharing and reminding me to be careful no matter where I am.

I do agree that crime can happen anywhere. But this thread did get me thinking. Would one agree that a resort with exterior hallways would be easier to commit a crime in? Because of the easier getaway?

Also, wouldn't one think that the first floor of a resort with exterior hallways would be expecially vulnerable?

Of course as I write this I think of the story of the Iphones being stolen from the WL pool and the perp being nabbed about to go into MK, having been tracked by that Iphone app. It was mighty easy for him to help himself then hop on a boat.

Thoughts?

i know what your talking about got them on the inn side it hard for disney on those resorts because they could park at dhs and walk over instead of going through the gate. The security at that resort dose walk through but they cant be every where at the same time. Disney warns you in the room to be carefully on who to call for out side food it right by the phone. I stay at board walk inn and never felt unsafe i have seen security cms walking around and driving around with the golf cart. But it not just disney that getting hit with the flyers it all hotels so we should be saying that all hotels need to step up security not just Disney. BMV is a great resort so please feel safe you have disney securty and the ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF deputy their to protect you yes the flyers are a pain but you had a safe trip and didn't get hurt.

Yes AKL is in Osceola county.
I just looked at a map of Osceola County. Its northern boundary is approximately the south side of Osceola Parkway, which runs east-west. WWOS and Celebration are also in Osceola County. AK and AKL are north of Osceola Parkway and are in Orange County. The rest of Disneyworld is in Orange County, also.

I know I may be jumping to conclusions but if it IS BWV,their security really needs to step it up a notch.

We had those pizza flyers under our door at the Dolphin in 2009. Every night. The only way I could think of to try to deter these people is to show ID at the elevators. And with the crowds at the elevators, that would just not work. Disney and other hoteliers had legislation passed this year or last, giving them legal means to deal with these trespassers with flyers. But if there was a good way to stop them, I'm sure Disney would try it. Best deterrent is an informed tourist.

We just got back from POR. Several nights we would find a pizza flyer stuck in the door. One night we were actually in the room when they were able to shove a flyer all the way into the room. in less than 10 seconds i got up to try and catch them and they were gone. i obviously went right when i should of went left out of our room.

although there are security gaurds at the main gate..these people are getting onto the resort grounds by taking the bus transportation or boat transportation from DTD or any other place they can just get "dropped" off while on a disney bus or boat. They probably travel in pairs...with back packs and once they are off the bus or boat its "off to work they go".

Sad thing is..disney knows about them but cant catch them.
