Theft at Disney

Not that this helps you now, but for those that are reading this: I always download my days pictures to our laptop or swap out the memory card every day, so worst case scenario (such as you encountered) only one day's worth of photos are lost instead of two or more.

This is a great idea, but... We did the same until the home we were renting in Orlando last year was robbed, and the theif took our Macbook Pro with the only copy of our pictures over the previous 4 months. He also took my wife's engagement ring and wedding band (her fingers were swelling in the heat) and my ipod touch. $6,000 worth of stuff (the rings are irreplaceable) is gone. The lesson is don't take anything on vacation that you don't want to lose (except your kids, just make sure you keep an eye on them ;)).

ugh... that makes me sick for you!! my hands swell from the heat and walking and by the 2nd day, i can't handle my ring anymore. makes me scared since i normally just throw it in with my other stuff. :( so sorry that happened!!

Ugh, I'm so sorry you had such an awful experience but thank you for posting this! My BF yells at me all the time for being "too trusting" and I'm notorious for leaving my backpack unattended while in WDW while I run up to get food at a QS place or something like that (and I had my purse stolen out of my open car window while my car was parked in my own driveway so it's not like I don't know the consequences!) You've definitely convinced me to be more protective of my things!

Hopefully her stuff will be found!

Sorry to hear that. I would be heartbroken over the lost photos. (and the other stuff too, but the photos can never be retaken.)

If you don't already have one...go to the apple store immediately and buy one of these.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD032LL/A/Time-Capsule-2TB?fnode=MTY1NDA0Nw&mco=MjI5NTkyMDg

Then, set it up. You'll have hourly backups taken whenever you are using the Capsule for internet access. You can also buy a hard drive that you plug into the machine, but it is less convenient and easy to forget to do.

Thanks for posting this. We will be taking our first wdw trip Aug next year Staying at the fort will make sure I lock any valuables in my car that I am not using while at the parks. Sorry this happened to you and your daughter. :surfweb:

how awful - great reminder too as we always feel safe in 'plastic bubble America' aka WDW - hope your daughter is ok and not too traumatised. :(

So Sorry this happened...I agree though..I never take anything of value or anything on vacation that I would be devastated to lose. That includes jewelry( wedding band/engagement ring ) and electronics.Thieves look for people with their guards down ,and in high tourist areas they don't need to look far

So sorry for your family. Thanks for posting this - we leave in a little over a week and I will warn everyone to be careful. Its normal to relax a little on vacation. We often leave a camera and room keys in a bag at the pool. (This is the main reason we don't put charging priveleges on our room key). I know I'm taking a risk, but we like to take photos at the pool. I may re-think it this year though :sad2:.

Makes me think of that coupon lady that was arrested for taking the stack of newspapers saying they were just 'sitting there'. She even mentioned something about if someone were to leave a camera on their car...etc that it wouldn't be stealing. Sadly some people see things sitting there and think...hey, obviously it's free for the taking.

I'm sorry your daughter had to go through this, but thanks for sharing so we can all be a bit more cautious with our stuff.....sometimes we forget that at somewhere as magical as Disney.

How awful!!!! For those of you with iPhones... there is a paid app you can download that is a GPS tracker for your phone. Then if it gets lost or stolen, you can go on the web site from a computer and track it. My sister had it, I have not bought it yet. Not sure how well it works, how accurate it is, etc. but may be worth looking into for some!

i think it was at all stars resort since it the Osceola county sheriff who was called pop would of got the orange county sheriff. Just remember this could happen at any hotel not just disney owned.

The poster you quoted has made it known that in their opinion, if you stay at a Value resort, you should expect bad things to happen to you.:sad2:

Which is total rubbish, of course.

sorry i was not trying to say it had to be a value resort i was just saying that all stars resort is in Osceola county and i think animal kingdom lodge is to. Pop is in orange county just like the rest of the resort. i was not trying to start any trouble it could happen at any resort, hotel if someone going to steal something they wont care which hotel it is.

So sorry this happened to your daughter. Creepy old thieves!!

Sadly, you just have to be really, really careful with valuables now days because you never know what will happen.

It's especially a shame because of the pictures. :sad1:

I like the idea the poster had about switching out the memory card every day. I'm going to do that this time! If something happens to the camera, at least I'll have the pictures.

disney david, I think maxiesmom was referring to the person you were quoting, OrlandoUnited. OrlandoUnited asked, "Was this at Pop Century?" He/she could have had many reasons for asking. Perhaps he/she saw police there, or someone shady running thru the parking lot and speeding away. To imply OrlandoUnited was dissing value resorts was making assumptions out of nothing.

No. Not making assumptions at all. There was a thread last week where OrlandoUnited was quite vocal in their statements about what you should expect when staying at a value resort. Another poster was having issues, and OrlandoUnited told them something along the lines of 'Well, that is what you get when you stay at a value resort. You were lucky you weren't robbed. Maybe you should save up for a moderate". That kind of rude and nonsensical post tends to stick with you.

I don't understand why a camera was left in an ECV unattended. Theft can happen anywhere.

It was wrong that it was stolen but more care should have been taken with your personal effects.

You should have explained that with your comment. Then I and other readers would have something to go on, instead of making our own assumptions about your comment, which sounded "off." I will reconsider my thoughts about OrlandoUnited now, based on your further info. I didn't read the past thread you referred to. Thanks for the input.
