I'm just getting back into doing theatre again after about 15 years. My partner and I both have Bachelors degrees in Theatre Arts.

Oh, and I'll warn you now. You're going to need another thread for stage mothers . . .

No degree here. Does experience count?
-was Charlie Brown my senior year in HS
-did 4 years of costumes in HS
-taught colorguard for 13 years
and of course
-seen RENT on stage 103 times.

WHATever.
I don't need my own thread.

I've had a long break, but I am getting back to working with theater. I mostly direct now, but I have picked up a few parts for people.

DS finished a show at school last night. He starts rehearsals for the next show on Jan. 3. :)

I am in the process of gathering info about summer programs. There's a place that does musicals, but I think they are "pay to play" as opposed to audition. I think you pay them $700 and they cast your child in their production, no questions asked. Not sure we want to go that route. The children's theater where he has always taken classes does summer camps, and Dallas Theater Center and Dallas Summer Musicals offer camps. They are all tuition based, but none of them are $700.

I guess I will talk to the Theatre dept. chair at his school and see which programs she recommends.

See! I told y'all we'd need a separate thread for Stage Moms! :rotfl2:

I too have dabbled some in theater, both HS and community. I have some experience in everything from acting to directing, including set and lighting design and choreography. Although I've been out of it for about 15 yrs now, just don't have the energy to get back into it. Maybe one day.

We do have a nice program in our area called the "Freddys." It's much like the Tony awards for High School productions, and there are about 29 local high school that participate. The awards celebration is televised and webcast at the end of May, and there was even a documentary done on the program entitled "Most Valuable Players" which was just picked up by Oprah's network. Two more months until Freddy season starts!!

Does this mean we are taking suggestions for 2011 DisBoard Community Theater Production list. We can hold auditions at a later time.

Actually, I am looking for shows to submit to direct for the local community theatre we've been working with. They've got pretty good set and costume resources, but limited space, and not a lot of budget.

They're advising us that they need to be shows that will sell well. So I'm looking for ideas. Shows that aren't "done to death" but are still fun and appealing. Oh, and I'm not looking for musicals, since there are a couple board members at the theatre that like to direct all of their musicals.

My thoughts right now are to submit The Foreigner by Larry Shue (a community theatre favorite, but not done in this theatre for at least 10 years); Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley (this one has name recognition and they've never done it); Moonlight and Magnolias (the play is about David O. Selznik locking himself, Ben Hecht and Victor Fleming into his office to write the screenplay for Gone With the Wind in three days. It's a lot of fun); or Boeing Boeing (the stage farce that was the basis for the Jerry Lewis movie in the sixties. Recently revived to great reviews and box office on Broadway).

So, how about it theatre peeps? Any other suggestions?

Do Drama Queens count? - Cause we're rife with those! :rotfl:

Take a look at "Kitchen Witches" This show is a show within a show. It has audience participation, and a great script for actresses. Small cast, and if you have a great costume resource, this is a good show. When I directed it there were a lot of stopping for laughs. The show is about a local cooking show host who is about to loose her show when her rival shows up for her last show. Because they are bitter enemies, the tv studio owner offers them a chance to do a show together (think Martha Stewart meets Paula Deen). You can get the script from Samuel French.

Thanks! I'll check into it.

Anyone else?

I have a degree in musical theater. I've been in shows throughout middle and high school, and a few during acting school and a couple now in the "real world" lol. Some favorites:

Sweeney Todd (chorus)
Baal by Bertolt Brecht (play a transvestite, my first time in heels, so fun)
Rocky Horror Show (Eddy)
Boys Next Door (Norman)
Midsummer Night's Dream (Flute/Thisbe; first time in a dress, lol)
