The worst week for DD!

I just have to vent about the bad luck my DD(18) had last week. She had a cheerleading competition last weekend and her backer didn't catch her; she wasn't seriously hurt, but was hurt. On Thursday she hit black ice and destroyed her car (thank God she wasn't hurt!). We had liability only on her car so now we don't know what we are going to do. On Friday we received her financial aid package from her first choice of colleges and they didn't offer her anything, so we had to tell her we couldn't afford it (she was recruited there for cheerleading so she was very excited.) She has been saving for her senior trip to Myrtle Beach, about had it paid off, and received an email on Saturday telling her the company had to pull the rental because the owners decided they wanted to stay there that week. So now she and four friends have to find another place which will be away from the other group of girls they wanted to stay with. So although I know it was a bad week and I am so grateful because she wasn't hurt, I feel terrible for her because she is so upset. And I know she just needs to cry, but my DH, who hates to see her upset, is driving her crazy because he keeps trying to cheer her up with jokes and comments like "what won't kill you will make you stronger" etc. I know he is trying to help, but he just needs to let her cry and understand that she just needs to let it out. Oh well, I hope things will get better for her. She should hear this week from her second choice of colleges, so hopefully that will be better news. Thanks for letting me vent!

Wow, what a tough week for her, and for you, too. I'm sending some prayers your way that this week will be much better. So glad she wasn't hurt. Maybe y'all can rent a sad girlie movie to watch together. Might give her a chance to let some of those tears out. I always feel better after a sad but uplifting movie (and some chocolate :) )!

You can take that as an initial offer. When I got my offers (8 years ago) my first choice school didn't give me enough to make it a feasible choice. So I wrote the financial aid office a letter stating how much I wanted to attend school there and how the current financial aid package made that infeasible. I also compared it to some of the other financial aid packages from other schools that I had received. The school re-worked my package and came back with an offer that included A LOT more in grant money.

I called the financial aid office this morning and it didn't seem as if they wanted to help. Unfortunately it is an out of state school so we didn't get any state grants. I think I will have my daughter call and plead and see what they say. Thanks for the input; we can always try.

Thanks everyone for the hugs and prayers. She seems to be in a little better spirits. She's the type of girl that rarely gets down, so it's hard to see her this way. But it's not the end of the world...she'll get through it!

Can't she get a student loan so that she can go where she wanted?

Even with the student loan we would have to come up with $13,000. We have another in college and we pay around $7,000 for him so that is about what we can afford with her. We do not want to take out a plus loan. She is our third, so we will be breathing a sigh of relief in four years, wherever she goes to school!

my dh doesn't get the "just listen and hug me" thing either, so I imagine I'll be in your shoes as my girls get older and face real disappointments.
