The Wilson's Do DL - final day, final thoughts, finally going back to DL????

It's creeping closer, and I am beginning to realize there is a bunch more stuff to do than just get ready for DL! I realized today that in less than a week's time, there will be 9 5 yr old boys, their siblings and parents all running through my house!! So not only do I have a party to get ready for, I can't exactly have piles of folded clothes and suitcases lying all over the place!! So now I gotta clean up this pigstye and stop living and breathing the DL trip!

However, that being said, I still am going to sit down tonite and condense our itinerary onto 4x6 cards for each day - schedule on one side, specific notes and menu choices on the other. Mainly for dh, who hasn't heard one word I've said since we booked this trip! At least it will condense the info for him so he won't be too overwhelmed. And once I have him captive on the plane I intend to make him study the maps and pass a test - though our 5 year old will probably be able to tell him where everything is by now!

So our character bfasts are finally booked - and he made note of the fact that we are celebrating the kids' birthdays, and said that there will be a special birthday cupcake and the characters will sing to them! So we absolutely HAVE to have the video camera with us for that!! Knowing my life, however, it will probably backfire and all three kids will be screaming in fear from having all the characters that close all at once! All because I am so sure they'll love it, they'll hate it, just to prove me wrong! Ah well, such is life,....

So the kids' backpack carry-ons are basically packed, except for their favorite story books and security items. I am beginning to get nervous about how we are going to get our 19 month old to sit for almost 3 hours - she's really active, and has a mind of her own - if she's wantin' to run, everyone on the plane will regret it if we don't let her run!! If anyone has any insight/bright ideas, please feel free to suggest them! It's her first plane ride (actually, all their first plane rides, and Mom and Dad's first plane ride since having kids!!) Just hope we have tolerant fellow flyers!

So now I just have to get through all the birthday stuff this week - picking up the loot bag stuff, ordering the cake (too lazy/busy to make one!!!), decorating the house, picking up the food from Costco....then as of Saturday at 2:00, I can really start getting ready in earnest!

9 days and counting!!! We've hit single digits, baby!!! WOOHOOO!!!!

Sounds like a crazy house up there! That will be one interesting plane ride! Hopefully during your vacation/trip (might not be a vacation lol) you will have time to just relax. You're going to have so much fun on your DLR trip!

In 9 days, I am gonna be in California, where there is ABSOLUTELY NO SNOW!!!!! It has been storming and cold here the past 3 days - we've been basically housebound. My son has his first outdoor soccer practice on Tuesday - not sure what they do when the field is covered in snow!!!

But I looked at Accuweather, and they are forecasting mid 60's to 70's, which is almost as nice as our warmest summer days!!

Yay for warmth and sunshine!!!

HOLY COW!!! Only two more days left! But, amazingly enough, I think we are almost ready. Lots of last minute stuff to pack, like all the electronics and toiletries, etc...but, for the most part, the big stuff is all done. Clothes, snacks, 2 pr of shoes each (in the case of the girls in the family, 3 or 4 pairs of shoes each!! ), umbrellas, hats, sunglasses, jackets, etc...

We've:
ordered grocery delivery (let's see if it works for Canadians!!)
made ps's for 2 character meals (vouchers from AAA for one, the other just on our own...)



Still need to:
- Make reservations for supershuttle for return to LAX on the 6th (just so I don't forget!!!)
- Make Ps's for Rainforest Cafe for arrival night - not sure if we will make it on time, but it can't hurt to try....we may end up just staying at the hotel if the kids are too cranky...
- Put together 4inx6in pages for character autographs that can later go in a special scrapbook for each child
- double check that hotel is aware we need a crib for the baby, and make sure they can handle the grocery delivery if we don't happen to be back from dinner yet (groceries arrive btwn 7 and 9, and RC ps's are for 6 - we may not be back at the hotel by 7....)


All in all, the "to do" list is significantly lower than it was, and the "to pack" list is 2/3 rds checked off, so that makes me feel pretty good!
We've stockpiled a few new toys for the kids to have on the plane - the plan is to hide them from them until a "moment of great need", at which time we bring them out to much fanfare and excitement and hopefully buy a few more minutes of good behaviour!

They will each have a bag of their own with stuff to do, including:
Coloring books,
crayons
candy/snacks
dry erase markers and boards
sticker books
games/cards
story books

We've looked up the seating arrangement on the plane, and it really works out well for us. The rows are only 2 seats wide (I know - little plane!), so dh gets one boy, i get the other and we switch with dd every so often. Hopefully that will keep them from fighting much!

We're all getting pretty excited now - mostly me!!

The flight down to LAX from Calgary was pretty uneventful. The kids were amazing - just watched tv (they were so excited about the personal tv's in the seat backs!)

Customs and security were easy - no issues. Carting all our stuff - 4 big bags and 3 carseats plus a stroller and 3 kids weren't easy to control for 2 adults. And once we found where we were supposed to meet the supershuttle, we loaded in and headed to the hotel. Check in at the Camelot was quick and easy. Unfortunately there was no one to help us with our luggage, so we had to manage on our own to get it all up to the 4th floor. We requested a room close to the pool, and did we ever get it! Room 412 - literally right across the outdoor walkway from the pool entrance - it just didn't get any closer!!! The room was fabulous - exactly like the photos on the website - King bed, tv and kitchen sink with fridge and microwave, huge wardrobe, table, 4 chairs, pull out sofa and coffee table. Adjoining room had 2 queen beds, bathroom sink and vanity (separate from toilet and bathtub), another tv, large dresser, another huge wardrobe, and small table and chair, and lots of extra space for the baby's crib. Plenty of space to store the carseats and never have them in the way. McDonald's is literally next door, and Millie's is a couple doors down.

We went there for dinner after settling in a bit, and came back just after 7pm. Our groceries from Von's were due to arrive sometime between 7 and 9pm, but when we came back to the room, they had already been delivered to the front desk and the bell staff were already loading the perishables into the room fridge! I was so glad the order went through - I wasn't counting on it working since no one from Canada has been able to order successfully....
So we unpacked some more and then hit the hay early - preparing for a busy day ....

We woke up at 5:30 CA time (6:30 our time - so normal wake up time for the kids...) We grabbed breakfast at the hotel in the morning - muffins, danish, croissant, juice, generic cereal, coffee, tea, apples and oranges. Sufficient for an early morning snack.

We checked with the front desk, and were told the park opened at 9, when we expected it to open at 10. So we rushed around to hit the gates by 9. Once we arrived, we realized, due to the lack of lines and the fact that bag check wasn't even opened yet, the park did, indeed, open at 10. So we strolled over to DTD and got the lay of the land there. Things started to look busy around 9, so we went thru bag check and got in line. Gates opened at 9:30 for rope drop - we were pretty close to the front, and headed straight for FL. I ran to get FP's for Buzz, and told dh to meet me at PP. Unfortunately, he got lost, so we met up at the Matterhorn and then went to FL. Rode PP, Dumbo, and headed for Alice. It was broken down, and ds1 suddenly decided the Matterhorn looked like a good ride for him (he's 5!). So he and dh went there while the little ones and I rode the carousel. We headed over to TL to see Buzz, and on the way, we got DREAMED with dream FP's - we took the route from FL thru Triton Gardens, and the Dream Team were standing right in front of Triton's statue. I barely noticed them till they handed me the FP's! What a way to start the holiday! We then used our FP's I had grabbed earlier to ride Buzz - kids LOVED it! We headed to Red Rocket's for an early lunch - pizza, chicken fusili and spaghetti for the kids. YUM! Boys rode Astro Orbiter, and Star Tours. Went to Autopia to use the dream FP's, but the lines were so short it didn't pay! Ds1 decided he HAD to ride the Monorail, so we did the round trip to DTD and back to TL, then headed back to City Hall and got the boys' birthday and first visit buttons. Back to the hotel by 3 for naps.
The plan was to then hit DCA for the PPP at 5:15, but Adam had other plans - to sleep most of the day! We had a hard time waking him at 4:20, but we did make it to DCA by 4:45. Dh and Logan (ds1) went to Soarin (to use the dream FP's) while I held a spot @ sunshine plaza for the parade. Adam was to see McQueen leading the parade - he was beside himself with excitement over seeing all his favorite characters! These were the first characters they had actually seen thus far, so the reality of the whole disney character thing hit him then. And so many of the CM's in the parade saw his button and wished him a happy birthday! I handed off our dream fp's to some nice young girls sitting next to us at the parade - they gave us a pass for each person, even though Allie (dd) didn't need one to ride. And since neither her nor Adam could ride most of the FP rides in DCA, someone might as well use them.
We went back to DL and ate dinner at the Plaza Inn. (sorry - forgot to take pics of any of the food the whole trip!! ) Portions were huge! Then took off to Buzz again, then Logan and dh did Space Mtn while the lil'ones and I did Buzz again (and again, and again, and again....) When we got out, dh noticed Minnie standing by the Star Trader store, with almost no lineup, so we went over to see her. Logan wouldn't have anything to do with any character the entire trip, but Adam was right into it. He wouldn't talk, but he walked right on over with his marker and paper and mutely shoved it towards Minnie, then brought the signed paper and marker back to me and headed back to Minnie to give her a big hug! It was adorable!! Had me laughing and teary eyed at the same time.

Lovin the saggy shorts - smallest size the store on Main St had when his other shorts met with an unfortunate accident!


Then we headed to BTMRR to use more dream FP's, and while dh and Logan did that mom and the lil'uns went to Pooh. When we got off, Allie became very upset and started garbling "mow Pooh, Mow wide, mow pooh....), so I think she liked it!
Then we did POTC with no one else around - I was a bit nervous about Adam, but since Logan had done every other big, scary ride in DL, I knew he'd be fine! The drops were a bit iffy, but when the ride was over Adam asked to go on "more slides", so I guess it didn't bother him much!
After park closing, we took the boys to the Lego store in DTD for a reward for good behaviour.

I realize my last post was long winded - will try to be less verbose....

We did our magic morning on Thursday, our second day, so I already had a good idea of where things were and had the FP system worked out. The kids were excited the day before while waiting for the monorail about the Nemo ride - we watched the subs go around the lagoon and they decided that ride would be fun. So we trotted off to Nemo as soon as the rope dropped. We got on the second round of subs, after conquering the maze/queuing area (I think they just keep you going around and around to make you feel like you aren't just standing around - we walked the maze for a good 10 minutes and only waited an additional 5! Not sure how dh managed the double stroller through all that!!) The ride itself was very cute, and being big Nemo fans, I am glad we did it. Having said that, probably wouldn't wait in the insane lines or waste MM time to do it again.

We then headed straight to FL to finish whatever we didn't do the day before. Rode Alice, Toad, and Casey Jr. Logan wanted to ride the Canal boats, but the line was out of the queuing area and down the road by the time we got there, and I wasn't willing to wait!
We went over to BTMRR, which was Logan's new favorite ride, and I noticed the Dream Team handing out something at the ride exit. Dh and Logan each got an 'after hours' pass, but since we all didn't get one, dh went back and asked about getting more for the rest of the group. We were told to head to City Hall and explain the situation, and we would be given passes for everyone else. So dh went to do that while we did some pressed pennies at the arcade. Dh came back from waiting in line at City Hall to tell us that we all had to be there in person, so we all headed down together to wait in line again. Luckily, Pluto was also there, so while dh waited in the city hall line again, we waited to see Pluto!
We got the additional dream passes then headed off for lunch @ River Belle (again, sorry, no pics! ) We headed over to Critter Country, and the instant we got close, both Allie and Adam got really excited to ride Pooh again! So we rode, and noticed as we exited that Tigger was bouncing around by the candy store. I didn't know about the meet and greet area, so I was surprised to find very few people in line. Allie loved the characters from a distance, but wasn't too sure about them up close. Once Adam and I both gave Pooh a hug, she was ok with hugging him too (her hugs are kind of just a lean in - even mommy rarely rates a full on arm hug! ). She wanted absolutely NOTHING to do with Eyeore - but she consented to play peek a boo for a minute. Tigger really had her excited - she kept pointing at him and shouting "boingy boingy". Adam had fun jumping with Tigger too!

I bought my first Tigger Tail and some other various goodies, then we headed back to the hotel, stopping for some ice cream treats on the way.
We power napped for a couple of hours, then headed to DCA. Did the Monster's Inc ride, Bug's Land (except the water parks - didn't want everyone soaked for our late night Dream event), and after 2 hours of pleading on Logan's part, I finally gave in and let him ride ToT!!

Lil'uns and me rode Monsters again (another of my favorite rides), then waited outside ToT for Logan and Dh to come out. Logan now has a ToT t-shirt - he was so proud that he rode a big scary ride! By then DCA was closed, so we headed back to DL. I was a bit shocked by how few people were in DCA those 2 days - all rides were pretty much walk on - we hardly waited at all. I know - you all tried to tell me it wasn't busy, but I just couldn't conceive of it till I saw it for myself!
So at 6:30 we were back in DL trying to figure out whether to watch the parade (which we could get a good spot on Main st to watch) or go for dinner. The kids picked the parade, so I ran to get some munchies from Blue Ribbon while we waited for everything to start. My camera battery pooped out after the Beauty and the Beast Float, so I actually watched with my eyes intead of the screen on my digicam! We also ate our first Churro - I happened to choose a spot 6 feet away from a cart - what luck!
After the parade, we headed for Big Thunder Ranch for the Dream Event - they let us in around 8, and there was a guy up on stage playing music and stuff. So we danced, played games and basically got all psyched up for 8:30 while they cleaned out the park, and then they just let us all loose on the park! Almost all the rides were open, and nothing had any lines! We skipped BTMRR, since it was the closest ride to the Ranch the line for it was pretty full. We did Jungle Cruise, POTC, PP, Storybook Land boats and the Matterhorn - all of them except PP were walk ons with almost no one else on the ride! The only low part of the evening was that Logan was counting on doing Buzz, but they didn't get done at the Matterhorn fast enough, and Buzz was closed by the time we got there. But what amazing luck to get in on that event! It was so amazing - I wish they did that every night (maybe they do!? )
We got back to the hotel around 10 - Allie passed out in the Ergo before we even exited the park, and the boys were barely concious when we arrived at the Camelot. What a fabulous (but long) day!

Ate my first Tigger Tail that night - had to share with dh who normally doesn't like treats, but even he was fighting me for a bite of that bit of orange colored paradise on a stick! SO YUMMY!!!

All your research paid off. Not because you had to follow your plan.....but because you knew enough (& got there early enough) that you could follow it and then deviate from it when those magical moments presented itself.

Great that you got the dream passes.

& isn't that area around Pooh Corner so nice & relaxing? Characters, Greenery, a great Candy Store/Bakery....& it never seems crowded back there.

Tell your 5 y/o that he's a "Big Guy"....I still can't get my DW back on T of T.

Molly, the Ergo was a lifesaver - we didn't use it very much, but it was our main way of getting Allie to and from the park. The boys were too tired after the first 2 days to do the walk from the Camelot to the park and back. So each morning we harnessed her up and headed to the park with the boys in the stroller, and each afternoon the same. It was a lifesaver when we needed it most, and it must have been comfy, cause she almost always fell asleep in it.
It was also a lifesaver when we had to take the bus to Target to replace my broken camera - it would have been a nearly impossible trip with the double wide stroller, but the kids were able to walk to and from the bus stop, and we had a way to carry Allie that didn't kill our arms!

Best memory of the '06 trip was putting E in a front carry (it was late and I thought he was going to nurse and it was easier to do that as we walked in the dark, rather than sit in brother's car making everyone wait), and watching him notice the twinkle lights in the trees in DTD on the way to the tram...he put his arms open wide as he had his head back and said...."diz-knee-waaaand". Ach, I could cry.


I'm impressed you did all you did with THREE kids. I barely function with the one. Probably good our increase-the-family plans haven't worked for 3 years b/c I might not have hair left if another kid were like E!

Friday at the parks - I was very afraid of how busy the weekend would be. Little did I know that the weekend crowds start building on Friday! By 8:30 we were in the line up at the gates, and it was already busier than any other day we had been there. Rope drop at Main St at 9 found us moseying our way past all the crowds to Toontown. We lined up outside the gates and were let in around 9:15. We were excited to see all the characters there to greet us - even Mickey and Minnie themselves! We were lucky enough to get to see them before the ceremony started - it meant that afterward we could spend time on the rides and just having fun instead of in lines to see characters! Meeting Mickey and Minnie was priceless - by now Adam had the hang of this character thing, so he just waltzed right up and got autographs and posed. Allie's excitement was so adorable - as long as they weren't too close, she was very happy to be seeing Mickey - smiling and garbling in her baby way and pointing excitedly.

As the boys left us to ride the rides, us girls hung back and just played around - it struck me how curious my baby girl has become - needing to check out everything firsthand. She was at first confused, then delighted at how everything made noises and/or moved - it was fun being just her and me for a while!
We went through everywhere in pretty short order, except Mickey's house, which we skipped because of the line that wound thru Minnie's house and out into the street! I think Minnie's house was their favorite - so many things to touch and interact with.

So we said goodbye to DL (on our way we grabbed more FP's for Buzz - I lost count at how many times we rode that ride....) and headed to DCA - it was the first time we ever waited in a line at the gate over there - all other visits had just been walk ups.
We went straight to PHD, which, next to the PPP, was Adam's ONLY big interest, but we were told it was cancelled for 10:30, and 95% chance it would be cancelled the rest of the day. Poor Adam was do disappointed - he had woken up that morning asking if today was the day he would get to see Little Einsteins....but amid promises of doing it the next park day (I hoped I could live up to that one!!), we headed off to Turtle Talk. Since we were early, we played in Sorcerer's Workshop. Logan took the character quiz in Beast's Library, and discovered he was most like Buzz, which put the biggest permagrin on his little face!!
Turtle Talk was fun - we found ourselves talking like Crush all day! Calling one another Dude! Adam even raised his hand to ask Crush a question - I'll never know exactly what he would have asked, because he wasn't called upon, but he told me it was "somesing 'bout fishies" - it struck me then that my little boy was growing up so fast!!
it was our first really warm day (at least it felt warm to us Northerners! ), so I left everyone to rest in the shade while I ran to grab FP's for GRR. Then we did the tortilla factory - Logan was a bit disappointed - I think he was expecting tons of machinery and action - a la "How it's Made" his favorite TV program. But we all enjoyed those tortillas, and the boys got their bag of free ones to take home! YUM! We ate lunch at Cocina Cucamunga (I think the only food pic I actually took all week!!). We wandered around Paradise Pier for a while, and walking past the Sun Wheel noticed there was no line for the stationary cars! So we hopped on - strangely enough that was one of my favorite rides in DCA (I know - I'm boring!).

It was nice to just sit and relax and soak in the views, and one of the few rides we could all be on together as a family. Back to the rooms for much needed naps.
Back to the park around 4:30 - had to wake Adam again (poor kid!!) Got pretty toasty during the long walk back to the parks, so to cool off, Dh and Logan went to ride GRR, while we waited at the wall across from the FP machines to try and take a pic as they drifted by. Allie and Adam were happy to sit on the wall watching everyone go by, and it was quite a nice way to spend the time, until a lady around the corner caught my attention with a "Ma'am - her shoe!!" Allie had been kicking her feet against the wall on the other side and somehow managed to lose her running shoe down the cliff!! I could see it down there about 10 feet below me, but no way in heck was I gonna reach it. I considered strapping the kids in the stroller and going after it myself, but the possibility of falling further down the cliff had me a little wary - I also didn't think the CM's would have approved! So I asked the ride attendant, who called someone on the radio and said they would bring a big claw device they have for just such problems. After about 15 minutes she showed up, and asked me to show her where the shoe was. After looking down for a minute, I almost panicked because I couldn't see it anymore, but it was just hiding under an overhanging plant. So she grabbed the shoe and everything was fine! Shortly after that, dh and Logan got back from their ride, quite wet, so we bought another commemorative t-shirt for Logan and headed off to see the PPP again - we watched it almost every day - Adam's favorite thing! And it gave the youngest two something fun to do while Dh and Logan rode rides that were too big for them....
We parked beside the pin trading cart and I got my camera out preparing to take pics of the parade. Then came my lowest point in the entire trip - perhaps the lowest point in my digitally dependent existence...MY CAMERA REFUSED TO WORK!! It would turn on, then promptly turn back off. The battery had been fully charged during our nap break, so I knew it couldn't be the battery. MY CAMERA WAS BROKEN ON OUR 3RD DAY AT DISNEYLAND!!!! I almost started to cry - I didn't know what to do! I watched with a sense of helplessness and loss as the parade passed by and I couldn't snap one measley picture....it was pure torture! All I could think about was all the photos I hadn't taken, all the stuff we hadn't done - Breakfast at Goofy's the following morning with no camera????!!!!
Thankfully by the time dh and Logan returned from their riding adventures, my nervous breakdown had all but passed, and we decided to head back to DL and do some relaxing stuff to take my mind off my broken camera. So we went to the Tiki room, and I comforted myself with a Dole Whip float, which helped somewhat. Allie was in heaven - she was absolutely entranced when the "bird chandelier" descended from the ceiling - she kept pointing at it and yelling "BIRDIE" throughout the rest of the show!! And Adam was hilarious - I guess the thunderstorm had him fairly worried that our stroller (parked outside) would be all wet and his stuff would be soaked and we'd have to go back to the hotel. He's kind of a worrier (gets that from me), so it was so funny to see his relief and bewilderment that it stormed so badly yet everything was dry....he was pretty confused for a long time.
Then we split up again - me to find the "magic pillar" and dh and Logan to ride BTMRR again. I was quite worried by this point in the vacation that I hadn't been able to locate the "magic pillar" - I didn't really know what to look for. BUt once we got close, it was pretty self explanatory! So we parked at the magic pillar (by this time it was 8:30, so there was really nowhere else to park!!!), and I began breaking out the lightsticks so dh and Logan would be able to find us, since all he knew was to walk alongside ROA till he found us!
So we managed to get a good view even though we only lined up 30 minutes in advance (though dh didn't believe me until the pillar started to rise that I actually knew what I was doing - the look on his face when he walked up said it all - "so I see you've managed to find the worst spot to see anything in the whole entire park!!" Yet another reason I love the Dis!! I was able to do a "see, I told you so" to my dh!

The show was great - no issues with scared kids, just tired ones, though Adam watched the fireworks with his hands covering his ears - he doesn't like loud noise.
I was also shocked at the disaster left in the wake of the evenings events in NOS - the half eaten turkey legs just thrown on the ground, the garbage and food and wrappers and mess scattered everywhere - I realized I had been somewhat spoiled by how clean and pristine the park is kept! They obviously work very hard to keep it that way!
So we headed off to Buzz for one last ride, then trudged back to the hotel on very very tired and sore feet. Dh was very unimpressed that he had to stand through F! and the fireworks - I think he expected me to just magically find a spot with a comfy recliner, or something!
