The Wilderness Lodge and Villas FAQ (Part 7) Simbas and Tiggers and Humphreys OH MY!

I just got back from my first solo trip to WL and I fell in love....hook, line and sinker!!!!:cloud9:
I had a courtyard view room 4109. The room was immaculate. The only issue was the tv would get quiet and then I had to turn it back up. Not a big deal as I only had it on a short amount of time. The room overlooked the falls and was wonderful to listen to the waterfall off my balcony. I could see the pool and the waterparade from my balcony.
I only ate at Roaring forks as I didn't want to dine alone, but the food was very good. I had a salad, burger, and soup and all were great. (I am not a huge eater and ate at the parks also).
I didn't swim as it was rainy while I was there, but the pool looked amazing. The lobby was very relaxing and I sat by the fireplace every evening to read and unwind from my day.
The boat service was great as were the buses. One day I had to wait about 15 minutes for the Epcot bus, but it was only 8:00 am when I got there, so it wasn't like the parks were open anyways, so no big deal.
My DH and i recently purchased DVC so I am really excited that the WLV will be available to us!!! I am so pleased I stayed at WL...I originally wanted Poly, but am SOOO happy I chose WL instead!!!

We just got back last weekend. We had a woods view on the 3rd floor which had a fairly good view of MK fireworks each night. Mainly grabbed food from Roaring Forks at supper time to bring back to our rooms. Never had to wait more than a few minutes for the boat or buses. Boats were down Friday morning due to the fog.

The Good: We LOVED the WL! Even my being-dragged-to-Disney husband fell in love with the place. We were on the DDP and ate at Roaring Forks a few times. The grill side was so-so, but the sandwiches side was much better IMO. The muffins and other snacks we got were wonderful. The weather was gorgeous except for one nasty day (the "tornado" day, which sounded worse on the news than it was in reality). Mousekeeping was great - however, we only got a new small towel animal when one of our boys took apart the previous one. Every day she set up the blankets and stuffed animals on their bed in a different place. Nothing cute, or fancy, just sitting nicely propped on the bed. Tons of towels. We tipped $5/day. We had plenty of storage space for our things, including the stroller which we didn't have to collapse. We were celebrating DS2's 3rd birthday, and on his birthday-day we had a signed photo of Mickey slipped under our door.

The Bad: OMG that freaking fan in the bathroom. By the second day I wanted to beat it with a bat. The only time it stayed on was if you were in the shower, near the shower head. Any other time, it was on-off-on-off-on-off. Giving the kids a bath was just an exercise in annoyance levels. (And in full disclosure, while sitting on the toilet) I started counting. 10 seconds on, then off. I would wave my hand, or lean far back - another 10 seconds on. And so on. One time I walked down the entry way hall and the fan kicked on. I don't know where that sensor is pointing, but it's wrong. I would also like to see them add in a curtain across the vanity area (like I've seen in some of the moderate resorts). Not just for privacy, but for me, it was more about the light shining into the room when I would rather my kids (and my DH!) get a little more sleep. My boys were also very disappointed to find out the geyser wasn't running. Even worse that no one told us it wasn't running, so we stood there waiting for 15 minutes before I asked one of the construction workers nearby. The time on the clock in the room was fast and I couldn't fix it. This summer we went to Vegas and our room had the exact same clock, and I had the exact same problem there, so who knows, maybe I just have bad luck or those clock/docking ports stink. Coming back to the room Sunday night, I stopped at the desk to find out if it was too late to get some bed rails sent up. VERY nice friendly CM, put in the request immediately. 45 minutes later, no rails. I tried to call but no one answered in HK. The kids were beyond ready for bed. After an hour, I went back down. The CM was upset to find out they weren't delivered yet. She, and another CM, started calling on the phone and then radio. The answer came back that their "radios weren't working and didn't hear the call". Hmm, okay. :confused3 I went back up to my room to wait, and it was another 20 minutes when a very unhappy looking person handed me the rails at my door. It was up to DH and I to figure out how to get them on the bed. I realize I should have remembered to ask for those when we checked in, but still, that was a disappointing experience.

The Ugly: OUR ROOM VIEW! LOL We were in Room 5099. First room of the corridor, so we were butt up against a long stone wall on the left, and the rooftops of the walkway to bus/WLV spread out far in front of us. We booked Standard, and that's exactly what we got. I didn't make a room request because I was hoping with all my might that we would get an upgrade, but no such luck. We checked in online and checked into the hotel on Sunday at 11:30am. Our room was ready immediately. Our CM was brand new and earning her ears, being attended by a another CM who clearly did not want to be there. I can only presume that this had something to do with it, especially after coming back and seeing a few other ppl post here that they got an upgrade during the same time we were there. I will admit though, that at least it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I was terrified of being one of the unfortunate who have to hear the trucks backing up every morning at 6am. So I am glad that we got this room. Not only was it very quiet (and to be honest we were hardly ever looking at the view anyway), but it was *very* convenient. We were 10 steps to the main elevators, which made it the best place to access nearly every place we were going. I only once heard noise from the Whispering Canyon, and it was when our room was in total silence and I was near the door. I presume if we were on a lower floor, that might have been different.

Food: As I said, we liked Roaring Forks. The roast beef and blue cheese sandwich was very yummy. We ate breakfast at the Whispering Canyon the morning we left, and we were less than impressed I have to say. Even though we were the only table our waiter was serving, and there were only about a dozen other ppl in the whole place, our service was very slow. One night we ordered room service and it was excellent. It came fast, and the waiter who brought it up was so nice and helpful.

Transportation: We only used the boat service, as my husband preferred to drive instead of the bus. We never waited more than 5 minutes for a boat. The only time there was a "problem" was on the way back from MK after closing - we had to pull over for about 5-7 minutes to wait for the electrical parade to pass through. DS2 enjoyed seeing it though, and I could be wrong, but I could swear the captain turned the boat so we could all get a look at the parade as it was passing.

All in all we loved every minute of it, and can't wait to go back....well okay, maybe not my husband, but he did say he would be willing to stay at WL again, maybe even September of this year! :cool1: This was my first time staying on property since I was a child, and I now can't see it happening any other way! :goodvibes

The Ugly: OUR ROOM VIEW! LOL We were in Room 5099.

Thanks so much for your review. Believe it or not you DID get and upgrade. The rooms on the 5th and 6th floor over the check in desk are considered Woods View. SCARY HUH? I'm glad that you made the best of it though!!!

Fingers crossed for your return trip. WL is such a beautiful place!!!

I've been a faithful lurker on this board for quite some time now. My sister and I took a trip with our daughters in April and frankly, we did not have a good time because our girls were cranky. so we decided to take a sisters trip in August without our girls to make up for it. I've stayed at POP and POFQ and had a good experience with both. We wanted to try somewhere new so we booked CSR. After lurking here, I've really come to love WL and I've never even been there!!! So I've decided to surprise my sister and upgrade but not tell her until we are on our way. Do you think that's ok to surprise her like that? We are not picky people whatsoever and we're just getting a standard view anyway, no requests. I guess even if you tell me it's not ok, that's too bad because I already called and made the upgrade!:rotfl:

Woo hoo! WL here we come! I'm so excited!

So when they talk about Whispering Canyon being loud and/or interactive - what do they mean by that?

Well, I for one think its a wonderful idea! We are surprising my dd10 with WL for her birthday. Originally was going to be FQ (she doesn't know that either, as the entire trip is a surprise), but with the discounts WL is not that much difference in $$ and both dh and dd10 LOVE WL. Of course, we were HOPING for CL and when I was ready to book, the discount is gone for CL. Oh well, we will be VERY happy with woods view bunk beds, another reason my kids love the idea of this hotel is that they won't have to share beds here.

I am surprising DD too! She doesn't know we are going at all and will be thrilled to be spending the first half of our trip at WL! 45 days to go!

Thank you for the review!!!!

I complained to the Poly about their bathroom fans as well. But the problem was that it was always 'on' but all it did was make noise - it never cleared the air - steam or smell ;) Maintenance came to look at it but they said it was normal which in my opinion was a bad normal. I've stayed there 3x and the bathroom fans are definitely one of my peeves. I'll be staying in a villa this next time at WL and I'm interested to know if they also have a bathroom fan 'issue'.

As for the vanity area...I am one of the few people that like the Poly because the bathroom items are IN THE bathroom! I don't like the sinks outside the bathroom area because it makes so much noise for folks in the room. It's fine and I can deal with it, but I do prefer the Poly room layout vs. the Beach Club layout (which must be more like WL with the sinks outside the toilet/shower/bath area). What's odd is you are the first DISer that has said they don't like it - so yeah! I'm not the only one :thumbsup2

It's great to hear you loved WL and want to go back. No matter what happens with your room, it's so nice to know that you still would go back. THAT is definitely the best compliment for a resort.

I'm curious to hear about the fan in the WLV also. We've thought about renting points to stay there. Not that the fan would sway my decision, but it would be nice know, out of curiosity.

LOL! I didn't want to get too long winded in my other post, but I have a love/hate relationship with the split bathroom thing. I hate it in the mornings because I'm usually the first one up, so I'd rather not disturb my little sleepers. Yet, when my husband finally gets up and showers, it's nice that I don't have to stand in a steamy bathroom while I finish getting ready!

I just told my husband we got an "upgrade" and he just laughed. I suppose I'm glad it was an upgrade not a view I paid more for!

We loved WL and will be staying there again in 2012. Any rumors of the rooms being refurbished?? lol

You will love it!!!! It is beautiful and cozy. I have never stayed at CSR, but I have been to CBR and while I love that resort they are both very large. The WL is smaller, has inside corridors and everything is relatively close. I think you will love it!

I didn't eat at Whispering Canyon b/c I went solo, but I heard them singing soemtimes for birthdays, and razzing folks who asked for ketchup. The food smelled wonderful as did the food at Artist's Point. Enjoy your trip...you will love it!

I would keep checking every morning. I've heard that they become available at 7am.

I was missing a day from my trip last year. I went online looking for one day, but it was not available. So I had to book a CY view instead. I linked the reservations and when I checked in they put us through in a CY view for the whole trip. I did have to go re-check in the next day, but it really did not matter.

Maybe you'll get lucky and get the same room too!

Sorry if this was already answered, I have two questions that I couldnt find a solid answer for.

1. Is there transportation to the Car Center or another place close by you can rent a car from?
I only need a car for the first two days, so I don't want to rent it from the airport. And would prefer to use MSE to get to the hotel.

2. Parking, is self parking still free?

My DH rented a car when we stayed at the Poly this past Sept (I think from Alamo) for 2 days. He booked it before we left, and then just needed to check in with them the day before picking up the car, and they sent a shuttle to pick him up and drive him to the car care center. Very easy

Also, as far as I know, unless something changed, parking is free at the resorts for resort guests
