The What's for Dinner Thread - August 2014 (recipe index in OP)

ALison, I am getting my girly parts removed.... I have a mass on my left ovary, and 3 on my cervix, the mass on my right ovary has gone away but an come back.

Wow! OK, I did not know that. Fran says it was the best thing that ever happened to her! I sort of wish I could do that. I am done with being fertile!

Alison ~ Hummmm .............I have never heard of such a thing. I even asked a few beef farmers around here and they were clueless also. Must be a West coast cut. But man, oh man, it looks amazing.

You know the first time we had it was in Houston, TX. Then we had it in Las Vegas, and we had it in Orlando, and now finally at home in Long Beach. So it's not a "West Coast" thing, but it is a high end trendy steak house thing. I bet if you went to the "right" places in Chicago they would have had one. Not saying you didn't go to the "right" places, but if you went somewhere that a steak dinner would have cost several hundred dollars, I bet they would have had one. Most of the places we have had it is at Del Frisco's Steakhouse, but we have seen it at quite a few other trendy locations. The Boathouse at Disney Springs has one as well.

I had asked if I could have a couple of years ago, but I did not have a medical need, then when these things were found during my MRI for my hip, they were open to it, and once they started to get larger they wanted me to have the surgery. BUT I have to be out of work 6 weeks, and they told me the news a week after I took job back in May. With all of the trips we had already planned, there was not a six week gap until January, so that is the plan, to have it sometime in January.

Morning girls,

Wait? So you went to Chicago to go to a concert and then sold the tickets? :confused3
I know crazy huh?? But this started out a "boys" trip. Jay and a friend were going - they LOVE Pearl Jam! Then Jason backed out and it was going to be just Jay and Elizabeth. Then Jay was accepted on the Police force and had to be in Academy for 16 weeks. So one day when us girls were talking we decided to go. Stephanie and I got plane tickets, the room was already paid for, but the kicker was - Not a one of us like Pearl Jam, so that is why we sold them and stood in line to get Jay a t-shirt. If it hadn't been for him going we wouldn't have gone. And my goodness the fun we had.

Being from Nebraska and being cattle farmers, it just totally amazes me to see a steak that expensive. Just blows my mind. We sell 1/2 beef for around $800 -1,000. There is NO way I would pay that for a steak. Just crazy!!

Brandi ~ Bless you. I know you haven't felt good for awhile. I really hope this will be a good thing. I - like Fran - have heard from friends that they also wished they had done it sooner. I pray that is your case.

WFDT ~ Egg sandwich for me. It's golf night so Doug will eat at the Country Club.

Make it a great day!!

Being from California and our crazy land prices out here, it would probably cost 10x what it costs you folks to raise cattle, which is why all the dairies and orchards were gone by the 1970s in favor of housing and business.

Economics dictates that any region that produces a commodity will not pay the prices said commodity can get when exported. The example they used in my economics class in college was Apples from Washington state.

WFDT? We're going to DTD (for my 4th visit out there in 5 days) and meeting up with Pam (from the DIS) and her Mom for dinner. Tomorrow they set sail on the EB Panama Canal crusie. Dinner will be at Tortilla Jo's.

Have fun and tell Pam I said Hi

FINALLY Friday!!

It's so funny as I had Monday and Tuesday off but this week has just dragged. Today starts our State Fair and we can't wait. It is a short hour drive from us so we try to go a few times. Tonight Thomas Rett is having an outside concert and tomorrow night Lady Antabellum is singing. We are going to both. It is suppose to rain tonight, but we have rain gear and hopefully it will thin the massive crowd out a bit. Probably not but a girl can wish. We also have plans to rebuild our bedroom closet. I want some floor to cieling shelves to put my jeans and sweaters on. I have a vision, I just hope Doug sees it. :)

Alison ~ I totally agree and understand, but I still just shake my head. When I see a filet for $59.00 at the Yachtsman I just want to toss my cookies. And the funny thing is it doens't even taste like our beef tastes.
Hope you and Pam & her Mom had a wonderful time. I know you did!!

Brandi ~ Hi my friend!! Have a great weekend. Are you gearing up for football? We can't wait. Go Big Red!!

WFDT ~ A fair corn dog - I can't wait. It is the ONLY time I eat them!! YUM!!

Make it a great day and a wonderful weekend.!

Have a great time at the fair. I have always wanted to go but have not done so, I need to change that.

Football is right around the corner, and we are getting excited about the first game. Flying to Texas.

WFDT - I honestly have no idea.

Monday Madness again.

Brandi ~ I seriously can't believe it is football time already. We had a family meeting last night to decide who was going to what. We have 8 season tickets and 12 that like to go. We really do need to invest in a few more. Jay and Elizabeth only go to 1 or 2 games a season, compared to the rest of us that never want to miss a game. But Doug and I have just as much fun sitting in a bar watching it also. Especially when it is really hot or really cold. This Saturday is our first game and I was able to get tickets for all of us. I can't wait.

We had a blast at the fair. We ate a corndog, fried oreos, beef and pepper girnder, fresh squeezed lemonade, and nachos. We got there right at lunch time and left around 10. We walked over 13,000 steps. We really did have fun. The highlight though was the Draft Horse Show. WOW!! That was very neat. Those horses are HUGE!!

Yesterday we worked on the closet and we also drained and cleaned the hot tub. We hadn't used it much this summer but with the nights getting cooler it was time.

WFDT ~ Pork Tenderloin, brussel sprout salad, and roasted sweet potatoes.

Make it a great day!!

It's this time of year that I feel so un-American! :lmao: I couldn't give a darn about football, well really any sports at all. I just don't find it interesting. If I were in your family Ellen, you could have all my tickets!

The fair sounds like fun! Ours is so far away and so huge, plus I'm sure it's just not the same kind of vibe as yours.

We went to Disney on Saturday. Well actually most of last week we were there! Five out of seven days! LOL! I'll have details on my WDW while I'm waiting around for responses. I do have to say that Disney finally saw the error of their ways and started making clothes that I like again. I sort of went a bit crazy, but now I have a new wardrobe for the October trip!

WFDT? Mahi mahi, not sure how I'll prepare it. Definitely on the grill but whether I make kabobs or filets remains to be seen. Zucchini, mushrooms, and red onion will be involved, along with Israeli Cous cous.

Ellen - I know I am getting excited, it is also a stressful time for me too, but I love it. Sometimes in the really tight games, I have to look away, and peek back.
The fair sounds like a lot of fun, ours is going on right now also, it is about 2 hours north of me, and it is really a headache to get there, but I really wanted to go this year, but it looks like I will not make it. :(

Ours had a Fried Oreo wrapped in Bacon.

Alison - I am not into football as much as others, but I do enjoy it, but I can also understand your side. For me it is a southern thing, the whole family goes Friday night to the local High School game, and we start the kids young on football, and then you just grow into it. it is kind of like an obsession. I think yours might be Disney. :)

I hope you had fun at Disney and enjoyed yourself, that is the best part.

Y'all's dinners sound yummy, tonight is spinach and "Ricotta" enchiladas.

Jumping back in.

Life's been hectic here...and I've got that dang winter cough again. Wish I could get rid of it!
Hope everyone is well.

PIO - hope you exchange student is going well, how long will she be with you?

She was with me for 2 weeks. And then the exchange girl from 2 years ago came back for a 4 night visit. It was really lovely seeing #2 again!

PIO ~ I know you are busy with your new student, but I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your beautiful pictures. You really do have an eye.

Thank you!

Happy Belated birthday, Ellen. Looks like you had a great day!

Hello all,
Newbie here. Been lurking for years, but I just found y'all. I like the idea of checking in and listing WFDT! Keeps me on track and saves money, too. Unless, of course, it's Houston Restaurant week, which in reality lasts a month, which isn't really a bargain, which is why we're back on a budget! And if you zip off to Vegas in the middle of it all with some friends.. :rolleyes1

Time to get cooking.

WFDT? Shrimp, from the freezer. Maybe scampi? That's fast. Not sure yet. And salad.

Been raining here for days. But weather is still hot and humid, so the less the oven is on, the better! Even stove-top cooking can be a chore.

I can definitely relate to football! Out son is a HS coach and we're going to the game this Friday, of course! Honestly, we don't go to every game, just a couple during the season. But it's a lot of fun to see the high school kids and sit with his wife and all the other coaches' wives.

Thanks,

I went every Friday night in HS, but we called it the Marching Band game. :lmao:
Well for us in HS it was all about being seen, but families that do not have any kids in HS still go to the game, it is a community event.
