The What's for Dinner Thread - August 2014 (recipe index in OP)

PIO ~ I have some great new recipes that I tried this last winter - Butternut squash, loaded baked potato, white chili, for just a few and they all can be meatless. Let me know if I can help with some ideas. I love soup!

I agree with Brandi! Please share you soup recipes. :)

Good morning all,

The sun is actually shining today and the wind is very calm. But it is cold, around 40. I will take it over the gray and rain we have been having. It is to rain all weekend though.

PIO and Brandi ~ I will get my recipes together and post them for you. I love soup - Doug not so much unless it is more like a stew. But he does eat it. I really experimented with some new ones this winter and they are really good.

With all of the drama with Luna on Monday I had to cancel my windshield appointment so I am going today. Then I have some shopping to do. Men's night starts tonight at the Country Club - Doug is SO excited. So I don't have to hurry home.

WFDT ~ Doug is eating at the Country Club and I am getting a burrito bowl from Qudoba.

Make it a great day all.

We arrived safely last night, but we were both exhausted. Instead of our normal choice of the"burger bar". The menu has changed over the years and is no longer as appealing as it was in the past. So we went to the pan Asian restaurant and had a Dim Sum style meal. We ordered four different appetizers, and that was a perfect meal. We were both pleasantly full but not stuffed.

Tonight we are going to our favorite steakhouse. There isn't one in the LA area so we go to one anytime there is one in town. Keeping with the theme of the day, "eating food as big as my head", we plan to order their Tomohawk Ribeye to share between the two of us! And of course some of their fabulous onion rings.

WFD last night - Local Indian restaurant called Namaste. I had the vegetable Korma and David had the Lamb Vindaloo

WFDT - Pizza....

Only one more week left at this job, I am getting really excited. I had to go get fingerprinted last night, so that is now done.

I am hoping that this new job affords me some time to be on the DIS.

I saw this on FB last night. I was almost envious as I love Indian food, but we had dinner at Del Frisco's which is carnivore heaven. I had oysters, not sure how they made the bacon, but it was insanely good, onion rings, creamed spinach and a Tomohawk steak. We were stuffed but breakfast this morning will be good!

Tonight dinner will be at the San Angel Inn.

Brandi your jobs are crazy with all the security you have to go through!

Ellen, I'm so sorry about everything you have been going through. I've been so involved in my own drama, I never expressed my condolences. I hope everything with the church works out and you get your winshield fixed.

You dinner sounds really good. I am sure David would have loved every bit of it, I am sure I would have eaten until I was sick.
I have branched out a little lately, with some cheese and cured meats - the results were not good, I do not think my body can handle the change.

My jobs have always been like that, it is federal government work and they want it all under wraps. At least it is not as bad as when I was in DC had to have retinal scan just to get in the building..

Thank goodness it is Friday!!

Alison ~ I saw that donut on FB. You are right, it was as big as your head. :)
Doug would have loved your meal last night. Oh heck I would have too. I am loving all of your updates and so dang glad you are having a good time. Is Jim there yet?
Thanks so much for your kind words, I knew you would understand.

Brandi ~ I am so excited for you and your new job. I have no idea what you do, so if you are happy, then so am I.

My new windshield is in and working perfectly. The lady really made me mad though. After it was finished, she proceeded to let me know it was done and that it was perfect and charged me and astronomical amount. I questioned it and she got VERY snippy with me. I am SO not a confrontational person and she took me so off guard. But my dander was up and I spoke up. Not only was it there/her fault that the first one was not right, I have had to take 2 afternoons off of work and travel round trip 70 miles each time. I told her I did NOT appreciate her attitude when this was not my fault. She did calm down and only charged me $400. I paid the bill and left!! I am so done with Safelite - never ever again!!

We are headed to Lincoln today at noon. Tomorrow is the Berkshire Hathaway Board meeting in Omaha. We were able to get credentials for Matthew and Katlin also, so we are going to make a day out of it. His best man (Shawn) and his wife (Kristen) are in town for a wedding so we are taking them out to dinner tonight. Then on Sunday is the Lincoln Marathon and Stephanie and Matthew are running it. I am their biggest cheerleader. I have 2 signs made - "This sounded like a good idea 6 months ago" and " Whine now beer later". I am so proud of them. It is to be cold and rainy all weekend though, so not the best weather. But we will have fun and it will be nice just getting away for a bit.

WFDT ~ A steak - I have no idea where - but that is what I will have!!

Make it a great day and a wonderful weekend.

Ellen, your weekend sounds very full, and exciting and fun! Hope the whole family has a great time, and enjoy that steak.

I am glad that your windshield is fixed, but sorry to hear about the attitude, I would do an online review about your experience, so others know.

Yes I am happy about the job, and it is a promotion for me, to Program Manager, I will be in charge of different project managers that run different projects for our federal government.
Everything from Software defined radios to spectrum management. Should be fun and I should learn a lot, but it is not foreign to me, I have been doing this for 25 years.

Sunday! And this week, I managed to get some cooking time in. Made a risotto on Thursday and today, I got some pumpkin soup made as well.

This week's dinner plans:
  • Monday - Hopefully, I'll get to the butcher and we can have burgers for dinner.
  • Tuesday - DH cooks!
  • Wednesday - Dinner at mum's.
  • Thursday - The boys head out for Ramen noodles. I have plans for a photoshoot on Thursday night, so I don't know what I'll be having for dinner. Maybe a sandwich or something.
  • Friday - I might do another risotto.

I'll keep the weekend flexible.

WFDT? David is Ahi Tuna with Asparagus and brown rice, I will be having Asparagus, cucumbers, bell peppers, and brown rice

PIO- your photo shoots have been amazing, you have been growing, and I think i see a keener eye in your portraits.

Monday night! And I did get the burgers for dinner. Now that it's getting colder, I hope I'll get some cooking mojo back.

Brandi - I need to take some greens out of your plate! I should add brown rice to the cooking routine.

Our grains usually consists of Brown Rice, Whole Wheat Pasta, Quinoa, or CousCous (David prefers the Israeli Couscous)

It's Monday again

PIO ~ I have to agree, I am thoroughly enjoying your photo shoots. They are amazing.
I have never tried risotto. Something about it just scares me. But I always order it. I really need to try to make it.

Brandi ~ Thanks for the explanation. It sounds very interesting. I know you will do great!

Alison ~ I am so loving your pictures - you look like you are having a great time.

Hi to everyone else!

Our weekend was wonderful but went WAY to fast. We had dinner at Texas Roadhouse on Friday. The Cheesecake Factory on Saturday after the Berkshire Hathaway meeting and after church yesterday we went for sushi at Blue down in the Haymarket. In other words we ate very very good. We had a great time. The kids' church is not able to have services, so we met in another church. We were able to talk to the minister though and he really does think it will be a go for the wedding. But just in case they do have a backup plan. Bless their hearts, they are taking all of this very well.

WFDT ~ Mens league starts tonight so of course Doug is golfing. So he will eat at the Country Club and I am having - wait for it - by wonderful egg sandwich. YUM!! I can't wait!

Make it a great day!

Ellen - Glad to hear that kids are doing well and that they have a backup plan.
Back years ago, when I got married, I was on a boat in the Chesapeake Bay, and we were getting married on the top deck. I had no back up plan. Day of wedding the heavens opened up and it rained buckets and buckets.
And when it came time for the wedding we had the most beautiful day, I could not have asked for better, but I was scared that morning. So having a back up is a good idea!

Enjoy that egg sandwich, I am sure that is going to hit the spot.

I am looking forward to tomato sandwiches, when they ripen.

Good morning all,

Brandi ~ Ya know...........they say that rain on your wedding day is good luck. I am right there with you - I can't wait for the tomatoes!!

This month is SO jam packed that every morning before we leave for work we have to plan where we are going that night. All the Grands have programs, recitals, concerts and that doesn't even count what Doug and I have going on. Tonight is Lilly's preschool program. These are so cute and she is so excited.

I have a massage right after work that I can't wait for. I feel I am a bag of tightness.

WFDT ~ I have no idea as we have to leave for Kearney by 5:15 and after Lilly's program will be to late to get something. Maybe a bowl of cereal before bed. So gourmet , huh?

Make it a great day!

We have eaten "at home" for the past two nights. I know people think I'm crazy for cooking at WDW, but our last night at the WL we had eaten a big lunch and I just didn't feel like going "out" and I knew I would feel that way. If you end up following the TR, you'll see what we had, but you say that we feasted on leftovers and it was great!

Last night we checked into our Poly bungalow and I wasn't going to waste my points by going out and leaving the room. We parked our butts in there and Alberto and I spent half an hour making spaghetti sauce and then we relaxed until it was time to cook the pasta, veggies and garlic bread. It was easy and we got to enjoy our room and the fireworks from the balcony. Tonight we will leave for dinner time, but will be back again for fireworks and a DIS meet.
