The What's for Dinner Thread - August 2014 (recipe index in OP)

Alison ~ I hated to see your trip report over. I really enjoyed it even if I wasn't ANY good at the game.

Well there is still the cruise TR. I have quite a few more updates for that one and then in four weeks I will be taking off on my trip to WDW. It's literally four weeks from now. My plane leaves at 10AM!

Thanks, Paula has said that France is awful and they don't travel there anymore, but Fran is a tad but more mobile than Paula. I appreciate you just keeping an eye out.

So far without any research I see our trip being 4-5 days at DLP, 4-5 days in the Loire valley area, and 4-5 days in Paris proper. She doesn't like to be gone more than 10 days. We may bite the bullet and do two weeks since the flights are so long.

But before any plans can be made, we need to get that old house cleaned out, and we have done nothing towards that for several weeks now.

WFDT? Tri tip sandwiches in the cat on the way to band practice.
I will help as much as I can...
With her scooter she can get around pretty well right, it is just the 5 to 7 steps that are hard right?

Tired Tuesday here,

I am so tired today. I didn't sleep a bit last night. Oh I know I did some, but for the most part I was awake. Finally at 4 am I turned the TV on and finally dozed. Doug wasn't much better and at 4 he just got up. I don't know what it was but neither of us slept. And I have a big day today. We are working on our Conference book that is due in 5 weeks. Pastor Anne is of course changing it up, as it should be but that also mean I have to do it all different. I have never liked the way it was set up to begin with. It makes it all a mess. She is putting things together that should be. It will be really nice to have it easier to understand and read, but it sure makes a lot of work for me. Plus I have my audits to start. Oh how I wish I wasn't so tired.

Brandi ~ I totally understand that you would want a bit of French as out on the back roads there might not be a lot of English spoken. But we were surprised that most everywhere we wet everyone spoke English. We had not one problem.
You will have so much fun.

Alison ~ I hated to see your trip report over. I really enjoyed it even if I wasn't ANY good at the game.

Ethan has a football game in a town about 35 miles away at 4pm. Good grief don't they think people have to work. Elizabeth is not able to go and Jay is still at the Police Academy so I am going. Actually Pastor Anne and I are going. She is so excited. I think it is so great that she tries to go the kids' events. They all love that she goes. Doug has to work till 5 so he and Elizabeth are going to Liams' football game here in Lex. I am treating Pastor Anne to dinner. She loves Mexican and on out way there is the best place. She will love it!!

WFDT ~ Cheese enchiladas, rice and beans. YUM!!

Make it a great day!
Sounds like a fun day. Enjoy!

Oh I now we will have fun, and we should eat way too much also!

Whoop! I love F&W, seems I miss it more and more each year.

Well the thing is, her scooter can't go up the steps. We'll rent a car so it will be a question of whether or not she can take the scooter, or leave it in the car and manage however many steps there might be. Then she only has a limited amount of walking she can do, so it's probably like she can walk to a restaurant or a winery (if she can sit down inside), but if it's sightseeing there will need to be an accessible ramp for her to do it.

Whoop! I love F&W, seems I miss it more and more each year.

I'm so glad that we have it "built in" every three years. I just hope we have the old place cleaned out by 2019 so I can start planning for that one again! Heck I hope we get it done soon so I can start planning again period!

one day!.... Not sure if I will "talk " to y'all again before the 11th, so I just want to say stay safe, have fun, and enjoy while I am away.

Happy Wednesday,

This is one of those days that I will be glad to put my head on my pillow tonight. I have a super busy day. We have a huge/HUGE funeral here this morning. We are serving over 200 for lunch. Then I have Hospital Auxiliary this afternoon, Faith Friends (our preK-5th grade Wed. session) at 5 and we will feed over 50 littles. Then Doug wants to go to Kearney to get the window trims. It is suppose to rain this weekend so he want things to do in the bedroom if he can't get the saw set up. Plus I have my regular work to do. UGG!!!

Brandi ~ Save travels my friend.

Alison ~ I wish I was closer I would love to help you clean out the apartment. I love doing stuff like that.

Ethan lost his football game last night. Actually they were clobbered at 48-0. It was not pretty at all. But they are 12, and will get over it. On the way to the bus they were ok. There is always next week.

WFDT ~ OH Doug is buying me dinner tonight - I AM SO NOT cooking. :)

Make it a great day all!!

Thanks for the offer of help Ellen, I think that's what we really need at this point. Something to just get us going and off our butts. Unfortunately we don't have folks locally who are willing to help us like that.

WFDT? We have a special event tonight at Walt Disney Imagineering. It's about building the Shanghai park. After a tour, they're serving us dinner, so I dont have to worry about dinner tonight. Anyone want anything from the imagineering gift store? T-shirt, pin....? Let me know we get to shop between 4-5PM before the tour starts.

I would take a pin, and if you see a DVC 25th pin, I would do that too, oh if you find the DVC D&B I would do that too.... I am so needy!

Mostly they are going to have Imagineering specific stuff, not really much DVC if any.

It's FRIDAY, it's Friday!!

I am really glad that this week is almost over. It has been ONE of those. Busy busy busy!!

Brandi ~ I think you are about to France. I don't even have to say "Have a good time" I know you will.

Alison ~ So how was the Imagineering Event? How neat that you can go to things like that. What did you have for dinner?
Oh, and if I was closer I would SO be there to help. Like I said - I love organizing!

For the last 3 weekends we have been in Lincoln for the football/volleyball games, but we are in Chicago this week so I have the weekend at home. We don't play until 6:30 tomorrow night so we have a few (a lot) chores that need to be done. Plus I have found a neat site that has crockpot meals for the freezer, so I am planning on getting some made up. There is nothing better than walking in the door after a long day and have the house smell delightful and dinner ready. I am the happiest when my freezer and canning shelves are full. The apples are ready also, so there will be pies, applesauce and cobbler filling made. I am really in my element here. :)

WFDT ~ Cheese steaks (the meat is in the crockpot) sweet potato fries and coleslaw.

Make it a great day and an awesome weekend.

The imagineering event was great. We did a ton of shopping, had some hors d'oeuvres and wine before they split us up into four groups. The first thing we got to do was ride the Shanghai version of pirates via a simulator. It was really cool.
Then we saw a small exhibit of original concept artwork, and after that we went to the statuary where we got our pictures taken with the original Snow White and Seven Dwarves statues. We were not allowed to take any pictures, but there was a photographer who took pictures all evening. Hopefully we'll get copies of those.
The last stop was the audio studio where they mixed the sound for the attractions. They played the Shanghai version of the new Soarin for us. Evidently each park has its own version.
Then we were taken to a presentation room where we had dinner. They served wine and after all that walking I did a a couple glasses of wine, I ended up getting very tired. There was a salad waiting at every one's plate. We had two "no shows" at our table, so Fran ate hers and one more salad. It was good for banquet food.
The rest was served as a buffet. There was green beans, Hawaiian bread, cheese ravioli with Alfredo sauce, salmon and filet mignon.
The desserts were a little chinsy, but that was OK as I didn't need it. Everything was great, but I don't remember all the things they talked about in the presentation because I couldn't take pictures. Usually my pictures tend to jog my mind when I don't take notes.
By the end I could hardly hold my head up and I slept the whole way home.
The only problem u had was the next day I was all "backed up" and by the afternoon I felt so bloated that I changed our dinner from homemade burgers to soup and biscuits. Hopefully I feel better today.

WFDT? Those burgers we didn't have last night. Tater tots and Cole slaw.

Good morning Alison - I think it's just you and me for now.

Your evening sounds perfectly amazing. How lucky you are to be able to experience things like this. Isn't it funny how sometime a glass of wine will put you to sleep and other times it makes you want to party. It does the same thing to me.
I had no idea that each Soarin has their own music. How cool is that. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful night with us.

We had a great weekend. It went WAY to fast but great non the less. On Saturday I got my pears and peaches canned. In the afternoon I put together 5 croockpot freezer meals. I am really anxious to see if this works as it was very simple getting everything together. I fixed: Hawaiian Pork chops, Sweddish meatballs, Chicken chili, Meatloaf and Chicken Alfredo. Yesterday after church we all (kids and grandbabies) went to our Methodist Camp Ground - Camp Comeca for a BBQ and Pumpkin Patch. Oh we had so much fun. We did a hay rack ride to the pumpkin patch to pick a pumpkin, there was a petting zoo, pumpkin painting, face painting, jumping house, and tractor rides. We spent 4 hours there and had a ball. I am sure everyone slept good last night. Oh how I love fall.

WFDT ~ Chicken pot pie, green salad and roasted brussel sprouts.

Make it a great day!

Yes I guess it is just the two of us!

I had no idea that each Soarin has their own music.

They don't have their own music, we just happened to be in the sound studio for the demo. What they do have is their own ending scenes. The final scene is different in Epcot, than in DCA, and different for Shanghai. However, I believe that they use the same soundtrack.

I put together 5 croockpot freezer meals.

Was this some sort of "weekly meal plan" type of deal? One of my FB friends posted something like this a while back.

Meatloaf and Chicken Alfredo

This cracked me up. I know that it is acceptable grammar not to put a comma after the last thing in a list if it is followed by an and, but there is a name for the comma after the last item when you do choose to use it. I read that phrase over and over wondering why you would put two proteins in a crockpot meal and why you would choose meatloaf to pair with chicken. :rotfl2: Then I realized that they were two different dinners! :lmao:

WFDT? Chicken Vesuvio with garlic bread to soak up all the garlicky yummy broth!

Good grief it's Friday again. The days and weeks sure go fast. Pretty soon it will be Christmas.

Alison ~ You are so right!! I should have used the comma. Sorry for the mix up. I bet you thought I was crazy!!
I leave the house every day at 7:30am and after work I go to the YMCA and usually don't get home till around 5pm. And when I get home I am starving, so having dinner ready in the crockpot is wonderful. I try really hard to put healthy and good meals on the table - Doug is not picky at all - for us to eat and when I plan out my meals it is so much easier.

I am off at noon today. We were suppose to be going into Lincoln tonight, but Ethan is marching for band in the "Harvest of Harmony" tomorrow in Grand Island. And we can't miss that!! He is so excited. But since I already had the afternoon off I am still taking it. We are all meeting in Kearney tomorrow morning at Stephanie's for breakfast and then will head to Grand Island. As soon as the marches by Doug and I are heading to Lincoln. We have a 2:30 game so we will have plenty of time.
We have a guy coming this morning to measure for our new carpet in the bedroom. They are laying in next Thursday. We are taking next Thursday and Friday off and moving back in. I cannot tell you how excited I am.
icon_biggrin.gif

WFDT ~ We are going to the tailgate. Ethan plays on the Legion Pony league (baseball) and they are doing a fundraiser. They are serving hamburgers, beans chips and brownies. Then we are going to the Football game.

Make it a great day and a wonderful weekend.

Good morning ladies,

I was swamped yesterday and if I could have I would have gone home and started over. A real Monday for sure.

Alison, PIO and Brandi ~

We had a very fun and jam packed weekend. I am still recovering. We were up on Saturday at 4:30am. Stephanie fixed breakfast and then we headed to Grand Island. We got there at the beginning of the parade and loved watching all of the bands. There were 240 entries!! Stephanie and family got there about an hour late (figures!) but still in plenty of time to see Ethan march. We found Elizabeth and boys so we joined them. Wow, for a Middle school band they were better and kept their lines better than some High school bands. It was so neat watching him march as it brought back memories of the girls marching and even myself. Ethan was the 3rd generation that marched in the Harvest of Harmony. Pretty cool!
We left for Lincoln right after he marched and got there around noon. We picked Matthew & Katlin up and went to the game - we won!! We played Illinois and it was a good game.
Sunday we went to church then to an Apple and Berry Farm. We got 4 different kinds of apples and a 1/2 bucket of raspberries. We got eaten up alive but it was a lot of fun. Took the kids out for dinner and home around 9pm. Busy and fun weekend.

Ethan has a football game tonight but we aren't going, his Mom and Dad are. They haven't done so good so I hope they win tonight. We have a lawn to mow - it takes about 2 1/2 hours!

WFDT ~ Breakfast for Dinner (Doug's choice) - bacon, eggs, hashbrowns and toast.

Make it a great day!!

Well I guess it's still just us, Ellen!

I don't know what we've been doing to make me so tired, but yesterday we got home from running errands and we had picked up dinner on the way home, and I practically wanted to pass out. We opened packages for a couple hours after I had my breakfast. I packed up four packages that we sold on eBay. I went to the bank, dropped the packages off at Fed Ex and the post office. We went to the tailor and I left six dresses with him. They are all floor length dresses, but with the weight I've lost, they are dragging on the ground so he's taking anywhere from 5 to 13 inches off of each of them.
After the tailor we went to Lowes and picked up dinner. Fran had a Cobb Salad and I had a Salisbury steak. Tonight is band night so most likely we'll be eating drive through food. :crazy2:

I'm here.

Life's just been super busy. It's my new normal.
Between photography, work and running the standard household chores, I don't seem to find time to get on the Dis much.
This year, I've been doing a photo-a-day challenge. I'll be glad when the year is over and I can go back to taking pictures intermittently.
I've also added walking...and lots of it...to my routine. Been trying to find time to walk at least 5 km every day.

Cooking....has also been on the list. I haven't been doing anything new in the kitchen, just the standard staples.
I think next year, I'm going to aim to cook 2 new recipes every week.

Hope everyone is well.
