The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

No problem!

Make as many as you want, I'm glad you were inspired by them!:thumbsup2

Wish I could get that way again so I'd make more.... but it's just not there for me anymore- guess I made too many for work.:upsidedow

Thanks! I hope I can find them at Michael's. Were they with the jewelry making stuff or somewhere else?

Everyones menus sound great and are an inspiration for me to quit *itching.

Nancy, thanks for the post. FYI, you made me cry!

Marilyn, glad you enjoyed the banquet! If I make anything for myself to enjoy it is going to be either the stringbean casserole, cauliflower gratin, or someone's articoke casserole.

Sheryl, you are killing me with the bacon. It is like I can smell it right through the computer. ;)

Yeah the bacon smell got to me! I'm going to have a good recipe for you later! The goat cheese was new this time, I mixed it all up & just nuked a bit to taste it! Oh boy!

Nancy, Yes the guys do seem to go for the gumbo & pot roast. My brother will NOT let me skip the pot roast & he'll even make the gumbo himself!

My Daddy has been gone since 94 & it's just gotten where we can reminisce (sp) about him & feel happy thinking of him.

Check by floral, if I remember right there should be a whole section of fake fruit and vegetables. They should be in with that. Last time I had to dig to find the small ones like those- everything was all mixed up in the bins.

fly by...stuffing is done and in the freezer.

Marilyn, that idea with the sweet potato sounds yummy! I saw, on the dis I think, sweet potato balls...make the sweet potatoes, mix with a little brown sugar, roll into a ball a little bigger than a golf ball, put a marshmallow in the middle, roll in crush corn flakes and bake.

I love green bean casserole!

Robin, Here is the recipe that I use as a guide. I am roasting the turkey with veggies and then simmering and then I will freeze. I will thicken on the day. Andrew is gonna steal a leg before I put them in to simmer!

MAKE AHEAD TURKEY GRAVY
2 onions
2 quarts chicken broth
1 cup water
¾ cup chopped carrot
½ tsp dried thyme
¾ cup flour, mixed with remaining water (or use a cornstarch slurry to thicken)
2 tbs butter
¼ tsp pepper
***You can add vegetable cooking water with the broth as well (potatoes, carrots, green beans, etc.)

Preheat oven to 400. Roast wings, onions and ¼ cup of water for 1 ¼ hours or until browned. Place wings and scrapings in a 5 qt pot and add 6 cups of broth, carrot and thyme. Simmer for 1 ½ hours. Strain add butter and pepper. Thicken.

I'm frying bacon again. Started with half the pack then realized, oh oh the house is going to smell like bacon! Threw in the whole pack! :lmao:

Now I want bacon! :rotfl:

I say all of it! :rotfl: What's Thanksgiving without lots of leftovers. :thumbsup2

I actually have to watch my DM, she will give everything away and leave very little for us. This is the same woman who will make enough food for an army for just her and I.

Not sure about our complete menu yet, haven't talked it over with her. I do know there will be turkey, mashed potaoes, gravy, stuffing, rolls, corn.

I am thinking about making a peanut butter cup pie, its a recipe I just got in my food and family magazine.

Ann- I never intended to make you cry

Robin- I cannot stand when MIL's are irresponsible with kids and think it is okay becasue they are grandparents! And the remarks are inexcusable!

Sheryl- Now I want bacon!

I think we should all just skip the turkey and just have bacon!

Yeah!! I was going to make some nice healthy poached salmon for dinner tonight, but right now salmon wrapped in bacon sounds even better! :rolleyes1

Glynis, don't buy the dishwasher that I have!! It's only a couple of years old but it is terrible! It has this "smart wash" feature that supposedly uses less water to clean...NOT. When I run it, the dishwasher stays on for HOURS! I think it's a GE...I'll double check when I get home.

Maria, I am sorry you were upset. Please be careful. I remember how devastated you were last time.

So, dinner is a recipe from this month's Food and Wine--pomegranate glazed salmon and persian rice. Time to pack up, go home, and make it!

How funny that today's topic is BACON. I took bacon out of the freezer for meatloaf and was thinking about BLT's but I really want that meatloaf. So I have to leave the bacon alone. I forgot Library is tonight instead of tomorrow.I am so turned around.

I even managed to forget that thanksgiving is next week.

I get to bring a appetizer and the dessert for thanksgiving. We are going by friends for the holiday. It is soo far, it's across the street form my home.:rotfl: We joke about have to find parking.

Maria I feel so bad for you and Greg. I can't imagine how you react to that carrot daggling in front of you. Many

Kathy that menu sounds so good. I of course would have to pass on the oysters :scared: Maybe you can bring in a rolling case I mean purse :rotfl2:

Janice, that is the perfect place to have a holiday!!! You can hit the bottle and not have to worry about driving home!!! Oh, you reminded me that bacon can top meatloaf...oh, jeez, I may have to make meatloaf tomorrow!

Oh marilyn, a tyler bacon sammie would be devine!

Can I just share that I bought Thomas a balloon today...his first one. The thanksgiving ones were all over Shop Rite today...and he is just happier than a pig in you know what (not that he isnt always happy)! He has been playing with the thing for almost 2 hours now!

Can I just say, if I were younger and had 2 great babies like A and T, I would have had a dozen!

OK, off to finish dinner. I hit the wine too early...can you tell?

Hey all I promise you that if not tonight, then tomorrow for sure I will be back to catch up.....have had the day from hell for the most part.....here is a quick bit of it if you feel like hearing about it......

While getting my back piece tatt'd on me today, friend who I am trying to seperate from, went with me, with promises to stick around till it was done, but ditched me (there is a lot to this whole story, but let's just leave it as the camel's back is breaking from straws for now)...while taking a break about 2 hrs into it, I get a call from the V.Principal that Ross has been suspended for 1 day for (are you ready for this), defending himself against another kid who has been bullying him, and punched Ross today and got Ross in a headlock so Ross punched the kid back. We are supposed to be happy because both kids got the same punishment..Ummm no my child has the legal right to defend himself doesn't he? We were told that if Ross hadn't of closed fist punched then he would have only received detention. (I brought up about 2 boys only getting detention for fighting a few weeks earlier, and was told that they slammed a boy into a locker and that isn't considered fighting WTH?). So, needless to say Kris is going up at 7am to have a conversation with Mr Dugal! Ross reported this kids bullying to a teacher last week and today. GRRRRR!
I am now trying to get the daily things done around the house, as my tat took 6hrs..It does look amazing, my artist is just awesome and they are (thank goodness)like family, cause between the friend issue and Ross, I was a hot mess of emotions.(doesn't help I am pms'ing!!)

So that is a brief summary of my day...I hope you all have had a much much better one then that!! I promise to be back to check in and catch up! XOXO

oh yeah no big surprise here---wfd was take out--Pizza...I wasn't about to cook.

Oh jeez Wendie...so sorry for all your troubles today. I hope Kris goes and gives them hell. Ross is a very good boy and they should know that by now!!!

Now, can we please please please see pics of your ink? I am dying for a tat and just need to figure out what.

Hugs and have another glass of wine! and Eff the friend!

With bacon on top? :rotfl:

:lmao::lmao:

Don't worry about catching up, just take care of that nutty Principal! He is lucky that Ross chose to punch him and not use some of what he is very good at.......I would point that out so that Mr Dugal knows that Ross held back!

Back early from the library. The ladies at the library got the schedule all confused:confused3.

Wendie I too say give the principal heck! What is a kid to do when in a head lock? Say excuse me but can we sit down and chat? ;) We always told Alex he can't throw the first punch but he can defend himself. I remember when Alex was 3 his dad started teaching him Kenpo. Alex got irritated with a friend who was punching and pushing him so Alex turned around and roundhouse kicked the kid into a wall. His dad was impressed but had to give Alex a timeout.:lmao:
