The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Hey y'all,

I wanted to find out what was going on with Buddy. Nan, I'm glad the test was shorter than expected & that the big Teddy Bear is feeling a little better! Bob & I have been praying each morning before heading out & Buddy is first on the list. I just love hearing about him with Kady, he's just so great! I hope Kady's party goes great!!

Or girl Kathy had a heck of day yesterday, but she was feeling better & looking greaut last night! We had a great time, we all met together for drinks with Lori & Rick. Then an awesome fun dinner at FF & bday party drinks with Brenda (oybolshoi) & her Dis friendies. We hung out till late talking & talking.

Still hoping to get with Stephanie! Tonight we have the big group dinner at CG, so hopefully we'll see Stephanie & Vicki there. I had a wine seminar scheduled today, but I think I'm blowing that off to hang with the girls & Bob & Johnny are heading to ESPN club for the Saints beating Lauren's Giants! ;)

We are having such fun with them! It's like hanging out with lifelong friends! Only thing better was if the rest of you could be here too. But we are eating & drinking for all of you!!!

Have a great day guys!

Let me see are you having Budlight tonight?:rotfl2:Rough morning or last night?

Melanie Welcome back that chili sounds really good

I think since today is supposed to make it up in the middle 50's I should celebrate and get my propane tank filled. I think tonight will be something grilled.

Laura The broccoli soup was yucky. The basic soup part was good I think I had my broccoli around longer than I should. When I blended the soup the broccoli gave the soup a grainy texture. I'll post the recipe later.

Haven't read back...I need prayers my friends...Tooth pain was horrible when we arrived yesterday, ended up getting a root canal on my first day of vacation, felt much better afterward and was able to have a decent evening and dinner with Sheryl, Bob, Lauren & Charlene. BUT pain started again during the night and I have an other dentist appointment in two hours.:sad1:

Actually beer is on the menu for DH!:rotfl:

Kathy, ouch:headache: hope appointment today helps your pain.

Sheryl, sounds like you are having a ball.

You both are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so glad that you are all enjoying the vacation. Poor Kathy, she has not had an easy time

AS much as well all would love to be joining you, I am thrilled that at least some of us have been able to get together. Have a wonderful time tonight at CG! IT is one of my favorite restaurants!

I did that with my broccoli too. I ended up tossing it and that was the pits!

:hug: Prayers on the way! Get pain meds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is rainy and cold here today. More snow in the higher elevations is expected. YUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a turkey to roast today. I'll serve it with mashed potatoes and gravy, some veggies and cranberry sauce. I need to roast off the back bones I cut from the chicken legs we bought, I'll use them to make a stock for the gravy. The turkey bones will be used for a stock and frozen. My sister's boys will be home for Thanksgiving, and my brother's DD and her family as well, so I am hosting the meal. I cannot wait to feed Timmy!!!!!!!!!!! Chris too, Gail soes not think he is eating right.

Buddy thinks our house is too small for so many people but we are the only ones who can fit everyone in the same room becasue I have an open floor plan. It is perfect because Marisa will still be here so she will be able to have Thanksgiving dinner with everyone, she will not be able to use stairs so dinner anywhere else would not work for her.
Not to mention that I am a control freak when it comes to Holiday meals so I am going to be in food Heaven!!!!!!

Gail is having a family meal the following week when Kim gets home from CA for a few days.

Melanie, welcome back. So glad you posted...how much cumin does the recipe call for please? This sounds great for the winter, I can't wait to try it.

----

Dh & DSS were going to the Patriots game today but have decided to stay home and watch it because of the awful rainy cold weather. Looks like dinner is going to be tailgating food.

WFD- Budlight, brats & kraut, budlight, BBQ chips, budlight, Chips and Guac, budlight, Swedish apple pie, and more budlight

Oops...I totally forgot to add the cumin amount. It's 1 teaspoon of cumin, but like I said, I think it could use a bit more.

Kathy I hope the dentist is able to stop your pain.

Cream of broccoli soup

•2-½ pounds Fresh Broccoli, Washed And Cut Up
•½ whole Onion (finely Chopped)
•2 stalks Celery, Washed And Sliced Thin
•¾ teaspoons Salt
•¼ teaspoons Black Pepper
•2 whole Bay Leaves
•¼ teaspoons Nutmeg
•4-½ cups Vegetable Or Chicken Stock
•1-½ cup Water
•4-½ Tablespoons Butter
•3 Tablespoons Flour
•2 cups Heavy Cream-divided
•1 cup Milk

In 6 quart stock pot or dutch oven, combine broccoli, onion, celery, salt, pepper, nutmeg and bay leaves. Cover with water and stock. (note: make sure broccoli is trimmed well, the stocks are too fiberous for this soup, just the flourets are better. You can also use frozen flourets). Turn heat on medium-high. Cover and bring to a boil. Turn to meduim and continue cooking until broccoli is tender, about 30 minutes.
Drain but reserve broth. Take out bay leaves. Put remainder of veges in blender or food processor with 1 c. reserved liquid. Puree.
In same dutch oven, melt butter of medium heat. Turn to low and stir in flour. Cook 1-2 minutes stirring constantly. Add reserved liquid and briskly whisk make sure no lumps form. Add in pureed veges. Over meduim heat bring back to a hot temp stirring often. Take off heat. Add in 1 c. cream and 1 c milk.
Whip other 1 c cream. Served with scoop of whipped cream and a dash of nutmeg

I know that you love your job, that is shining clearly on every post.... but you are going to get very sick if you do not start paying attention to your health. Now i cannaot take a road trip yet but I can ell you than when I know that Marisa and Buddy are fine i will find you Missy! if you don;t start taking care of yourself.

 I did go to bed at 9pm last night, and I mean dead asleep at 9pm not just watching TV. I was soooo tired. Thanks for the scolding

Kathy, I saw your post on FB. I'm so sad for you

If/when y'all head to AK, find my momma and give her a hug! She needs one

Today's another crazy one at church. We have Vespers tonight at the camp but I still haven't recovered and am not feeling great so I may stay home. We'll see how I feel when I get done here in a few hours. DH is going (playing guitar at it). They are grilling hot dogs out there. If I don't go, I'll just find something at home.

So sorry Kat!
Hope your feeeling :hug:better.

Praying for Buddy.

AImee, is your Mom ok?

Dinner tonight is roasted turkey breast, masked potatoes & green beans.
I'm going to make a pumpkin pie....

Cold & rainy here, still in my jammies & reading a good book.

I saw Bethany's post on FB...she is all NOLA now ;)

Aimee- worried about your Mom

I was hoping for some Disney Diser's updates. I have been checking FB looking for pics! Gosh...

Maria- we are on the same dinner path. I have my turkey resting on the counter and the potatoes cooking. Gravy is done and extra stock made. Donny is here so he and buddy are watching some old jet movie and I am sipping a glass of wine :thumbsup2

I decided to make a big pot ole chili. A new Guy Fieri recipe. I'll let you know if it tastes as good as it smells. Oh and brownies ala mode for dessert.

It is the prefect chili day. Sunny with a little chill in the air.

I hope Kathy's tooth pain has gone away and that she is enjoying herself.

Who, me? :rolleyes1 Whatever was it that I said? :confused3

Speaking of FB...I put up a link a few days ago about a massive landslide in eastern Washington State. It happened about an hour or so from where my parents live. I thought it was a bit crazy, but was thinking to myself that "oh, we never take that road." Well I just got off the phone with my mom. She asked me if I had seen that news story. They just happened to take that road just one week before a huge chunk of the hill fell off!

Kathy -- I'm sorry you're having such a rough time. I hope you got to enjoy CG tonight!

Sheryl -- Thanks for the update. It sounds like you're having fun!

Ann -- I think you DH made the right decision about the Pats game. He must be loving the score though.

Janice -- Thanks for posting the soup recipe!

Nancy -- You are the perfect person to host a big Thanksgiving dinner. I know you will love being able to feed everyone.

Aimee -- I hope you are feeling a bit better. Is everything okay with your mom?

Bethany -- That is really scary about your parents. I'm glad they're okay.

Becky made us all fish chowder and popovers for dinner today. It was a good meal for this miserable day. It was even snowing here. Yuck!

Laura, I can't believe the snow up your way. The Pats field is covered. So early for snow. :scared1:

Slow around here...I am really missing all our friends. I hope they are having a ball at CG.

Good (very early) morning ladies! I'm already at the airport waiting for the counter to open so I can check-in. My crazy dh (with the best intentions) booked me on the very first flight out this morning. And since I was at the mercy of ME, here I sit; 2 and 1/2 hours to go with absolutely nothing open. At least I'll be first in line to go thru security. Kind of like a fast pass;)

Was great getting to meet all the ladies, minus Charlene and add gretchen's mom, along with bob and Johnny. Great group of women and great food. There are pics on someone elses camera, which will be posted soon.

I feel like I wasn't the best dining companion. Yesterday was crazy and I was frazzeled. I went to check in at ssr only to be told my reservation had been cancelled. What?!? And they weren't sure a room was available. Turns out my waitlist for bc came thru AFTER I did the online checkin from home. So we schlep back to bc (where we had just checked out). When I was checking in the cm said "oh yes we have a 2 bedroom ready for you" I was like, no way am I using that many points for one night. Then I was told that I had been upgraded complimentary, meaning someone screwed up and they had no room for me. It was nice to have all that space, but I wish it wasfor more than 12 hours!

Hope everyone has a great day! I'm going straight to bed when I get home. And we're hosting Monday Night Football tonight (crazy, I know) so I have to shop and cook this afternoon. At least I'm making chili-easy and quick.

Stephanie hopefully you can sneak in a nap when you get home. A football party? Who's idea was this? :rolleyes1. I hope you have some good friends so when you fall asleep in the chair they understand.

I heard about the snow out east. Anytime before thanksgiving is too soon for me.

I think I have time for one more cup of coffee before I have to jump in the shower. I will be after work. Stay warm!

Stephanie -- I can't believe you are coming home only to cook and host Monday Night football! This could not have been your idea. I hope you get a nap in somewhere.

Janice -- Believe me, I was not hoping for snow this early. Thankfully, it did not hang around and rumor has it that it might hit 65 tomorrow.

Bethany -- Thanks for posting the link.

Today I have to go get Caili's skates sharpened. That will eat up a good chunk of my day. I wish there was some place closer that did a reliable job sharpening figure skates. It does mean I get to visit the cheese shop though. Dinner is going to be leftover fish chowder for me after skating. I'll probably let the kids have a cheese plate.
