The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Good Morning!

Quick check in...we are going to the Giants game today. Grandma is here to watch Thomas.

Happy Birthday Alex!!!

Nan, Continued prayers for Buddy!

Kat, That is so scary. I hope Kyle is OK and glad they got the A hole that did that!

Gretchen, glad you had a great night!

I will try and bbl...I have some stuff to do this week and my cousin passed away the other day so I have to go to the service tomorrow. She has been very sick for a while and I believe just a couple weeks ago was diagnosed with cancer.

Hope its a great day all.

Happy Birthday, Alex!! :dance3:

Today is busy - we have an event tonight that I need to greet/usher at so my day is mostly full of work. Bummer. I plan to grill burgers early before I leave and make sweet potato fries to go with it. Unless DH has a better idea

Becky- I would eat your brown meals anyday!

Lauren- I am so sorry for your loss. It has been a tough year for us Dinner gals :grouphug:
WE are sampling the oatmeal bread and it is really good. I made honey butter to go with it.

Dinner is a glazed spiral ham, mashed potatoes, broccoli crowns, glazed carrots and rye bread.

Nan, My DM used to make oatmeal bread when we were kids. I can almost smell it just by you talking about it, so darn good! Prayers for Buddy.

Lauren, sorry for your loss.

:goodvibesHappy Birthday Alex!!!:goodvibes

Kathy, so glad Kyle is fine. So scary.

---

WFD- chicken stir-fry over rice.

Kathy -- I am so glad Kyle is okay. That is scary. Some people are such idiots.

Robin -- Jellyfish sounds like a fun costume! Are you making it?

Lauren -- I am sorry for your loss.

Nancy -- Have you posted your bread recipe? My kids love oatmeal bread.

Janice -- I hope Alex had a great day.

The kids and I did go to my parents' house today. My mom made a roast beef, gravy, roasted potatoes, pea tendrils and mashed turnips with shallots. It was really good.

Caili is continuing to improve, but she is still very congested. She has a doctor appointment on Tuesday morning, so we will see what they say. Until then, I am keeping her quiet, and I am not taking her to her regular skating session tomorrow.

Happy weekend ladies! We had a fun weekend, just us girls. And, yes, the boys survived. We had leftovers for dinner last night, but baked up a lot of sweet goodies for a girls night last night. Cookies, brownies, cheesecake bites, etc. We had Katelyn and her classmates over last night and had a lot of laughs. Made me feel really young to hang around with them.

Today we hit one of the local pumpkin patches for a hayride and pumpkin picking. We had a great time. Now it's time to buckle down for two days of work and then 2 days to get ready to leave for the sunshine state. And I sure hope there's sunshine next weekend, cuz it's gonna be a dreary week here.

Kathy--OMG that is so scary!!!!! I'm glad Kyle is okay and they caught the idiot!

Happy Birthday to Alex!!!!!!

Laura--glad to hear that Caili is feeling better. Probably good to keep her home and quiet for a few more days!

Okay, gonna eat some pizza with emma and head to bed

Well, I had all this stuff I quoted then my computer shut down and I lost it all. Lets see if I can remember it all.

Sorry Calli has pneumonia again. A coworker had it last winter and now keeps getting resperatory infections.

Kat- that's scary about Kyle. Glad he's okay.

And someone needs to take away the scooter keys in the event of intoxication, wouldn't want someone to end up in a lake or lagoon! ;)

The memorial service was Saturday for my friends father. It was very nice.

Dinner tonight was McD's fries and cottage cheese. :sad2: Didn't feel like cooking anything. I really need stop doing this, I have lots of good things in the freezer and the cabinets.

It's going to be a busy week, just found out Friday that one of the schools we use for our schools closed programs is going to be unavailable for the 16th when they are closed again. That means calling about 50 parents and telling them we are moving them. :headache: Would have done it Friday but our computers were down, AGAIN!

I hope she is MUCH better by Tues so she can get the okay to return to normal activities.

Your dinner makes me laugh.

I didn't feel well this afternoon so I told DH we'd do burgers tomorrow night instead. He ate my Pei Wei leftovers and I went out for dinner with dad after the concert tonight. Eating at a greasy spoon coffee shop at 10pm is not wise, but it was soooooooo tasty.

I have to be at the hospital at 530 tomorrow morning for someone's surgery. I'm tempted to just stay up - have to be up in less than 5 hours anyways. :confused3

Serious question - do you think it's irresponsible, or perhaps just "not smart", to buy a new car when a spouse is unemployed?

Aimee, as far as the car question I think you and DH can only answer that one. Noone else knows your financial situation. If you are getting by with just one income and things are not tight then go for it. If things are strained right now then I would not put the extra stress of an additional bill. Is replacing the car a luxury or necessity right now? Good luck deciding.

----------
WFD- Meatloaf

Laura- I am glad that Caili is doing better! Hope that today brings her closer to WELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stephanie- What a great weekend you had! I am glad that the "boys" survived without you stinky girls :rotfl2:

Marilyn- I would eat FF's too if I was faced with the issues you have at work. Of course I would finish that meal off with chocolate

Aimee- I don't know what is the "right" thing to do about an auto purchase. That is really a personal financial comfort thing. I do know that unless I absolutely needed to make that purchase I would not but that is because I hate car payments in the best of circumstances. If you are thinking about this perhaps you could make a realistic spreadsheet of all of your expenses, determine how much longer your DH will receive unemployment benefits if your family has them for income, add some room for unexpected expenses and see if you are comfortable with what is left. Make sure you factor increased insurance and property taxes into those figures if those expenses will go up.

I have a lot of leftovers to use up so I think Buddy and I will have the rest of the casserole. He has a physical this afternoon so I don't want to cook late.

I will post the bread I made yesterday, it was really good!

I am sitting here sick to my stomach and shell-shocked. Kyle called earlier and told us that last night after he'd dropped Mariah off at her dorm he was back in his apartment complex parking lot talking with her on the phone before heading up to the apartment and he heard some crashing noises. Before he could even realize what was going on his driver side window was being bashed in while he was sitting in the car. He had glass everywhere and cuts on his face. Some idiot was on a drunken rampage smashing in random car windows. Long story short, he's OK, the idiot was caught, thank God the police were there quickly.:sad1:

Oh, my goodness! Kathy, that is so scary!!! I'm so thankful that Kyle wasn't hurt!

What is it with people these days? My niece was leaving college for her car, and as she walked out of the building, she saw three men eyeballing her. She is 6 feet tall and not a small thing, so she didn't worry about it too much. The men started following her to her car, so she picked up her pace, got in her car and locked the doors. As she got situated in her car, she heard someone pounding on her window. She looked up and saw one of her classmates, a much smaller girl, at her window, and she was roughed up and bleeding from the head. Andrea unlocked the car and the girl got in and they locked up again, and watched the 3 men make obscene gestures at them, until Andrea pulled out her cell phone and dialed 911. Then the men ran! Apparently, the other girl had come out after Andrea, and the men gave up on Andrea and targeted this other girl. They dragged her into her car, which was just behind Andrea's, and started to beat her up. The girl has no idea how she got away from the men, but got to Andrea's car.

Once the men had run away, the girls reported to security, and the police came and an ambulance. It was horribly scary!

Trying to get caught up here! I’m afraid all my F&W buddies are going to see me “fat”. The steroids kicked my appetite up to a new level and not being able to go to the gym…I’ve gained 5 lbs!:sad2: I’m going to the Dr. later this morning, hopefully getting a cortisone shot.

Lauren – Hope you had a good time at the game, thanks for sending me a pic! I’m so sorry for your loss, I will keep your family in my prayers.

Janice – I hope Alex enjoyed his birthday!

Laura – Continued prayers for Caili. Hoping she gets a good report from the Dr. tomorrow.

Steph – I’ve already started checking the weather for the weekend and it’s looking pretty nice!!!!

Marilyn – Too funny! Maybe we need to have a “designated” scooter driver.

Aimee – As everyone else has said, only you & DH can accurately determine if it’s feasible for you to make an auto purchase now. I’m the type that hangs on to my vehicles until they die. I hate to have that monthly note. But if you’re shelling out $$$ on car repairs it’s definitely worth looking!

Glynis – Your niece’s story just reinforces what Johnny & I have talked about all weekend. The world is so much scarier than it was when we were growing up. No wonder us Moms don’t sleep.

WFD – White beans & rice, grilled Italian sausages and salad.

Good morning! It is a short school week here, we have our Fall Break, so we have decided to go visit my Dad and do some celebrating! We are going to leave on Wednesday and come home Sunday! I'm so excited to see him, and hug him!!!!

Anyway, enough of my excitement! Saturday was wonderful! The memorial service was lovely, and there were many more smiles than tears!

I've got some darling pictures of the kids with the witches at the Halloween town experience, so I'll post those in a bit. We also took them to see Harry Potter 6 at the dollar movie theater. The older kids loved it, but Timothy was bored out of his mind. He and I ended up in the lobby for most of the movie. Deep sigh! Someday I'll get to see the entire movie. I've been twice, and still haven't seen the movie all the way through!

Today is laundry and packing day, so I've got my work cut out for me! Alan is home from work this week, so he's got an extensive "honey do" list, as well. Top on that list, is spraying for spiders, and finding out why the light in the kitchen won't work. We may be taking a trip to Home Depot or Lowes for a new light fixture! If so, we'll have lunch out. Keep those fingers crossed!

Dinner tonight is up in the air. I need to go through the fridge and the pantry and see if I can make a meal from what's already here, and not go grocery shopping. Wish me luck! I'll report on my findings later!

Sheryl - I'm hoping that all is well with Alexis and that she gets the green light to go to school!

Kathy - I'm so grateful that Kyle is ok! How is your ankle doing?

Nancy - How's Buddy? I worried about him all weekend, and put his name on a few more prayer circle rolls!

Stephanie - Glad the boys had a fun time without the girls, and glad the girls had a fun movie weekend! I'm so jealous that you are going to meet the WFD gals! Wish I could be there!

Becky - Your German meal looks wonderful! Alan would be in hog heaven! He loves him some brats! I'm glad to hear a good "grown up" review of Toy Story Mania, as that is something I want for Christmas!

Laura - Definitely keep Caili home for another day or so! We want her well this winter!!!!

Gretchen - Good luck with the housebuilding!

Everyone else, have a wonderful day, and I'll check in with y'all later!

We can easily afford it now, but DH is scared that his unemployment will end before he finds a position or something will cause him to lose it and then we'll run into issues with ALL our bills, not just a car payment. See, we donated my car earlier this year. I am now driving "his" car that his grandparents used to own and he's driving "his" truck he got for college graduation. Both are paid off. However, he got a new gig babysitting a friend's two preschoolers and will need to change cars with me. His truck is fine, but it's a single cab and I often cart children and lots of supplies in my car. I won't be able to do that when I start driving the truck and I'm not sure how to get around that. There is also the issue that I now don't have a car of my own... DH is downright obnoxious when it comes to how "his" cars are kept and the nagging is getting old. So, I found a car (SUV) that would fit my needs for work and longterm needs of having a family but DH is scared for me to purchase it right now...

Kathy - I hope you can get another shot. I ate us out of house and home when I was on high dose prednisone. It's evil stuff - works fantasticly - but I was NOT myself (and I ate a ton!!!). Don't beat yourself up over 5 pounds - after all that you've lost, you can easily get that back off once the steroids are finished.

I went to bed at 1am, got up at 430 and was at the hospital at 530 this morning. I am soooooooooo tired and delirious. I already decided I am not working a full day and will be good to make it until noon.

Tonight we're grilling burgers and having sweet potato fries with them.

Hey y'all,

We had a nice quiet Sunday. I grilled sausages & chicken thighs two ways. Yesterday it was barbecue, tonight it will be lebanese chicken in a pita. Hopefully I can get away with little cooking the rest of the week. That way I can get everything all packed up & ready to go Thursday!

Lauren, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Laura, I'm glad Caili is getting better.

Glynis, I'm glad your niece is okay. That was too scary, I'm sad for her friend. Poor girl must be scared to walk outside! I'm happy you'll get to see your Dad soon!
Alexis did make it to school today, no phone call yet. The scary part will come at the end of the week when she finishes the antibiotic. I'm worried that I won't be here for them, but Chris will be watching out for it & I know she'll be on top of it. Poor kid spent all weekend doing schoolwork!:sad1:

Marilyn, If the feet & back hold up, I'll try not to rent a scooter. There is no way I could be the designated driver during F&W! I hope your work week improves a lot.

Becky, You're brown food looks so much better than mine! :thumbsup2

Kathy, There is no longer a fat you!! Girlfriend you've gotten so darn fit & skinny, a few lbs will not even show!

Aimee, Good luck with the car decision! Why were you at the hospital this morning? Iron injections or for someone from church?

Nancy, Prayers ongoing for Buddy! When is his next MRI?

Oh my Kathy how scary. I am so sorry Kyle had to go through this but so thankful he is ok.

Glynis ~ have fun with your Dad.

Laura ~ I am glad to hear Caili is feeling better.

Nancy ~ prayers are still be said for Buddy. Please let us know how things turn out.

Happy "Late" birthday wish to Alex.

Sheryl ~ I am glad you got your packing done and are now almost readty to go. You so deserve this break. How is our girl feeling this morning?

Matthew is a bit upset with himself and his scores this week, but Doug and I are so proud of him. We have no idea how the standing will fall but I will let you know as soon as I know. Thanks so much.

It snowed all weekend. Ended up getting almost 8 inches of the white stuff. It is still here even, as the temps never made it out of the 20's. Where in the heck did fall go? We went right into winter - sub-zero winter. And ice - OH how I HATE ice.

I have to travel to Omaha (about 3 1/2 hrs. east) tomorrow as I have a Doctor appt. I have to go, so traveling dust would be appreciated. I hate winter weather!!

WFDT ~ beef stew is in the crock pot and bread is ready to be made in the bread machine. Oh the house will smell heavenly when I get home later.

Ankle update - My Dr. doesn't feel comfortable giving me an injection since the area is so close to the achilles so he's sending me to an orthopedist tomorrow morning. I'm starting to think the scooter will be my only option.:sad1:

Kat I am so sorry. I know this wasn't at all what you wanted to hear. But I would give anything to be riding in a scooter next week in WDW instead of here in the snowy Nebraska. Please take care and let me know if there is anything I can do.

Once the men had run away, the girls reported to security, and the police came and an ambulance. It was horribly scary!

Oh my!

I hope your work week improves a lot.

It's not shaping up that way, the computer is still wonky. :headache: In our office building I can go to any other computer and log in to my database. Today I can get in to my documents on my own computer but have to go to another office to get in to my e-mail. In that office I cannot get in to my docs.

To make matters worse I have no voicemail and haven't since last Thursday. :headache:

Not sure what I am having for dinner tonight, I have a lot of errands to run.

Glynis -- That is a terrible story about your niece. I am so glad she and the other girl were okay and I hope they caught the men. Good luck with all your chores today!

Sheryl -- I'm glad Alexis made it to school today. I hope this course of antibiotics works.

Kathy -- I hope you were able to get the shot and that it works quickly.

Aimee -- When does the unemployment money end? I would try to postpone the purchase if I could, but I get really nervous about big expenditures. Good luck!

Stephanie -- It sounds like you had a fun night.

Liam and Caili are off school today. Caili was nice enough to share her cold with me, so I am not feeling well. She is still coughing pretty badly, so it will be interesting to hear what the doctor says tomorrow. Dinner is going to be ribs, broccoli, sweet potatoes for me and maybe mac and cheese for the kids since Liam won't eat the ribs.
