The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Good morning everyone, hope y'all have a great day!

Maria - Wishing you a great birthday!!!!!

Happy-Birthday-Blinkie.gif

WFD - Mexican stuffed shells, refried black beans and salsa rice!

I'm going to WDW THIS month!!!!!:yay:

Glynis- I know that your Dad will appreciate all of the family interaction in his treatment. My Mom knew exactly how she wanted her treatment to be handled but there was such an information overload that having us there made the difference between her placing her energy in getting well and her using her strength to decipher all of the Dr's instructions. Prayers are continuing!

I agree with Laura- no bad Mom thing! When Daniel was little he never complained if he was sick but he was a kid who had chronic ear infections. I finally figured out that when he was quiet that meant he was sick and would bring him to the Dr. He never complained of pain so I really never knew how sick he was. The Dr did tell me that child could have a physical in the morning and then have a full blown ear infection that afternoon.

Very sad here today, my BFF's father passed away this morning, he was only 64. :sad1:

Hi...

Just a quick post to let you all know Ron passed his med card today. His BP was 130/86 !!!!!!!!!!!!!:banana:

:cheer2::cheer2:

Laura – That Caili must have a very high pain threshold, God Bless her!

That's the athlete she has tucked inside that little body!

He had COPD and has been in and out of the hospital for the last couple of months. I think it was something that was in the back of everyones mind that he probably wouldn't live much longer. He went into the hospital late Sunday with pneumonia and then his kidneys shut down. They tried dialysis but every time they did his blood pressure got dangerously low.

She's holding up okay. The boys are having three differant reactions, the oldest is really torn up and went to the hospital with his mother this morning, the middle one doesn't want to talk about it or hear about it and went to school and his football game today and the little one, who is 8, just keeps asking questions.

:sad1: My heart breaks for your friends :grouphug:

He started last year, and he really likes it. He is not aiming to be a gymnast, but he thinks gymnastics will help him be stronger and be better in baseball.

Did I tell all of you that he is up for review for Major this month (October)? That is two years early. He probably won't get it, but it is a big honor that he is even being considered.

Your kids are really focused on their sports and their commitment is :goodvibes. Liam is really going to grow! You, on the other hand are going to be :faint: . I have no idea how you do it! When Gai'ls kids were little I used to take them to some of their classes, she just could not be in two places at once!

We don't have cats, we're both really allergic to them, but the dogsitter has 5-8 at any time (strays she comes across). Mine just aggravate them. I think her cats get ticked everytime my 3 come over to play

When Otto comes over my cats take off! I shut the door of whatever room they escape to and then open it up when they are ready to come out and make sure that we are ready to watch them ignore him.

Well it was freezing at the Fair last night! We had a great time, ate our way through every State! Kady was thrilled, we ran into her BF and another little girl so she was able to go on the rides with the girls and her Pa was let off the hook, he was not looking forward to climbing into those little cars with her :rotfl: She did want to go on the Giant Slide so Buddy took her up there. You cannot have a rider in front of you any more so she was tucked under his arm for the ride down. She was terrified and holding on to him for dear life, burst into tears as soon as she reached the bottom. He had bought more tickets so we told her we would give them away but she wanted to go again. She did not smile but I think she wanted to prove to herself that she could do it. I waited at the bottom of the slide JIC but she was fine....he probably has bruises where she was glued to him but she did it!

It is freezing today so i am going to work in the house again, dinner is up in the air. Buddy has an appointment at the eye Dr for a repeat of a visual field test so I am going with him. I think he is suffering from "falling apart" overload. A few years ago we found out he has Atypical Retinitus Pigmentosa. Atypical because it has not spread, usually this condition cannot be treated except with massive doses of Vitamin A, which only slows it down. By his age people are blind. On his last exam he failed the visual field test so he needs to be retested, the pigment has not spread but the Dr wants to repeat the test and then decide if he needs to go back to Boston. Right about now he has had it with the Dr visits so I want to go and hear what she has to say.

Good Morning!

I hope everyone is doing well. More craziness ahead...we are looking to put the house on the market net week so I have my work cut out. I am trying to get in touch with Tom to see if he will be home this weekend. There is some stuff to do that I cannot do alone.

Crud, the baby just woke up...gotta run.

I will try to BBL...have to go to Wally World and then to get my hair done...

xo for all.

Dinner will be cheeseburgers and salad.

have a great day!

Good morning. Well, we got our snow yesterday. Luckily, it didn't hang around, but it came down something fierce for a while! The tops of our mountains are dusted with white. Alan is thrilled as it means the elk will come down the mountain for food, and it's opening day of elk hunt on Saturday.

Dad has his appointment this morning, so I'm waiting anxiously for my brother to call me. I'll let y'all know what happens! Thanks for holding my hand through this!

The ravioli stew was so easy, and very tasty! Here's the recipe:

Italian Ravioli Stew

2 C. carrots sliced
2 C. onions, sliced
2 cans of chicken broth
2 cans Italian style diced tomatoes, undrained
1 can white or red beans, drained and rinsed
2 tsp. basil
1 pkg. frozen Italian sausage or cheese ravioli
Parmesan cheese

Place the first 6 ingredients in the crock pot and stir together. Cook on low for 6 hours until the vegetables are tender. About 30 minutes before serving, turn crock pot to high and add the ravioli. Cook until heated through (about 30 minutes). Serve with Parmesan cheese on top.

It was the perfect meal for a very cold evening.

Wish I could be there to help out! Take care and don't overdo, ok?

Good morning everyone! I have to post quickly before the computer people come and take our connection down again today.

I haven't been able to post at work because we are having network troubles and my home computer has been tied up at night because I am using it to convert Hailey's favorite VHS tapes to DVDs. Boy does that take forever!

Anyway, everyone is finally well now. Long story, but Patrick is the only one who didn't get strep. He tried to fake it by getting his mom to take him to the doctor and it worked with Kenny and I for a couple of days, but we figured it out and sent his fanny back to school.

But the biggie is poor little Hailey. My poor child started her monthly last night. I wasn't expecting it this soon as she isn't 12 until next week. Anyway, she and Kenny were freaking out. I did manage to calm both of them but not without several prayers for deliverance.

I'll check in again when I can.

Morning all! I had a few moments before work starts so I figured I would get a quick look here. Last night ended up being sloppy joes and tater tots, so tonight will be italian sausage in red gravy, pasta and broccoli.

It is freezing today so i am going to work in the house again, dinner is up in the air. Buddy has an appointment at the eye Dr for a repeat of a visual field test so I am going with him. Glad Kady had the courage to go down the slide again!
Poor Buddy :headache:, he just can't catch a break lately, can he?

Glynis - keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers this morning; I hope the Doctor can work some magic for your dad. That stew sounds good; I'm adding it to my recipe collection!

You really have your plate full, huh? Poor Hailey! I can just imagine how Kenny was freaking out. Katie hasn't started yet, but it is killing Alan to think that his baby girl is that old.

Morning all, we are having a beautiful fall day here. I think this weekend is going to be pretty awful so I'm planning on enjoying today.

Gretchen- I'm so glad you have a vacation coming up, I think you're do for one.

Glynis- I'm glad you are all able to help your dad, I can't imagine remembering everything the doctor's have to say. That's to much for one person, I'm sure your close family will help make things easier for your dad. Good luck to Alan elk hunting, they always seem to have fun even if they aren't successful so I'm sure he's looking foward to it.

Lauren- I hope Tom's enjoying his new job and learning some new domestic skills too.

Nancy- Kady and the slide reminded me of my kiddo. I picked her up at the babysitter last week and she was so proud of herself because she climbed to the top of the little tikes climbing thing (I don't know what it's called). It's only about 3 feet high, it belongs to a two year old. I have a feeling she won't be following in her dad's footsteps and become a tree climber.

Aimee- I'm glad Ace is doing so well. My dog is four and loves his crate. We never put him in it anymore and I'd love to put it away (it's pretty big) but he loves going in it on his own.

Laura- Congratulations to Greg. That's such an honor. Hope Caili's back to normal today.

Kathy- Woohoo, Disney this month!

Dinner tonight is "garlic chicken with more garlic in the slow cooker." I discovered www.eatathomecooks.com through here (Glynis, I really think you'd enjoy that website) and saw this recipe, looks pretty tasty.

Enjoy the day everyone!

Why? Are we supposed to have bad weather again? I hope not. I wanted to go to Blue Hills and try for some foliage pictures.

Marilyn, I am sorry to hear about your friend's Dad. Three little kids...that must be rough.

Aimee, thanks for the air freshener tips. I used to have those plug ins but I stopped using them a couple of weeks ago because the smell was bugging me. I have lots of allergies, so I guess it is good that I stopped.

Nancy, good luck to Buddy today.

I stopped at the grocery store after work and picked up some sole and made sole meurniere with rice and asparagus. This meal only took 20 minutes start to finish. I was not a huge fan of the blended rice but the fish and asparagus were delicious.

You think I would have been smart enough to pick up something for tonight's dinner last night, but no. So, I either have to go back to the grocery store or we will have to go out to eat.

I can't believe the WFD Disney meet is coming up so soon! I am jealous! Is anyone going to post from the parks, and if so, are you doing it on this thread, or should I look for it on another board?

.

Poor Hailey, so young & it must have been tough to calm her down:hug: Sending you extra hugs & prayers.

Lauren, please call me & I'll come out next week & give you a hand.

Nan, praying for Buddy. Poor guy....enough is enough with this pain.

Bruce was amazing last night...her wrote a great song for his last concerts at Giants Stadium before they tear it down. His wife wasn't there last night, could that mean there is still hope for me???;)
I'm going to try & get some tickets for his final show next week.

Greg & I aren't going out for my birthday dinner tonight, we are going to wait until the weekend so we can relax...

He is awesome, isn't he? When we saw him this summer he said that his wife was tossed from a horse, perhaps she is taking it easy.

We never celebrate during the week, we try to wait until the weekend so that we can relax as well.

Oh my, you have not had an easy week  Poor Hailey princess: It does not seem fair that she should need to cope with this change to her body, she must have been so scared. Poor Kenny! Dad's don't deal well with their baby daughters growing up.

Take it easy, gal!

Well, I needed to change Buddy's appointment this afternoon. He thinks he has a late move and becasue this can wait until Tuesday I rescheduled. Dinner is going to be meatballs in gravy over WW noodles. I am glazing Kady's floor so I am not going to spend much time in the kitchen.

I am not an organized woman so my cleaning takes a weird turn but I am almost done all of my Fall cleaning. Closets are done, my kitchen is almost finished, bedrooms pretty well set and the basement presentable. I will start outside next week.

Ann -- I hope Luke made out okay with the flu shot. Have a nice visit with your cousin!

Nancy -- I'm impressed that Kady went back down the slide. Neither of my two would go back and do it again. Liam would try to act like it was no big deal and that he had fun, but if we asked if he wanted to go again he wouls say no. Caili would freak out and have a meltdown, and everyone at the fair would wonder who that awful mother is torturing that poor girl.

Poor Buddy. I can't blame him for being sick of going to the doctor. I hope he gets through it all and doesn't have to go back for a long time.

More craziness ahead...we are looking to put the house on the market net week

Wow, that is really fast! Your house must be in pretty good shape already. Good luck! I don't know how you can get a house together for sale when you have a baby.

Gretchen -- Poor Hailey. That must have been so hard to try to explain to her. Just keep repeating, "Vacation. Vacation. Vacation."

I picked her up at the babysitter last week and she was so proud of herself because she climbed to the top of the little tikes climbing thing (I don't know what it's called). It's only about 3 feet high, it belongs to a two year old.
 Garlic chicken with more garlic...sounds yummy!

Happy Birthday, Maria! I'm glad you had fun at the concert.

Glynis -- Snow? Thankfully, we haven't seen any of that here yet! I hope your dad gets good news today.

Thanks for the congratulations for Greg! I will keep you posted.

My dad brought us some much needed groceries today. Dinner is going to be bratwurst, spatchle and sauerkraut.

Caili is doing much better. The antibiotics work quick! She is doing a good job keeping quiet today, and I am going to keep her home tomorrow too. It seems silly to send her in just for one day.

Oh my friends! I am floating on air right now! I cannot even begin to tell you how I feel!!!

The oncologist gave us all the best news ever!!!! The cancer in the tissue of the prostate area is so tiny that one shot every 4 months will take care of it! Dad has the first shot scheduled for Monday morning. My brother will go with him and stay while we see how he handles it, and if there are any side effects we need to deal with.

As for the rib, the oncologist doesn't see any cancer at all! He did see a scar from when my dad fell out of a tree about 4 years ago. He said it's possible that there's a tiny bit of cancer there, but the shot will take care of that, as well.

I didn't have any idea it was possible to go from being so scared to being so relieved and happy! I'm literally floating, and crying happy tears!!!!

Thank you all so much for your prayers, your love and your support! I have been so blessed to have you all with me at this time!

To celebrate this news, I'm not going to cook, but will order some Chinese, as we all like it, and I'm too happy to cook!!!!!

:bday: Maria! Sounds like you had a good time at the concert! We usually wait for the weekends too. Our weekdays are just to hectic to enjoy a nice meal out.

Becky - you food pics are always so good looking. I don't care for fish, but OMG that looks so yummy! If I put plates down looking like that in front of DH, he'd think he died and gone to food heaven!!!

Lauren - good luck with the house! So, did Tom have a good first day?

Ann - I hope you had a good time visiting with your cousin. I also hope Luke did well with his flu shot.

There no such thing as too much garlic, in my opinion. This one sounds yummy. Let us know how it turns out!

Glad to hear that everyone is finally healthy; shame about Patrick; some kids will do anything to get out of school . Poor Hailey and poor Dad having to deal with that. They do seem to start younger these days.

Aren't Dads great!:yay: I'm so glad to hear that Caili is doing better!

Oh my friends! I am floating on air right now! I cannot even begin to tell you how I feel!!!

That's great!

Having chicken something or others for dinner tonight. :rotfl: I made a lime and cilantro rice for dinner last night and am going to have the leftovers with some grilled chicken strips, cheese, salsa verde and sour cream rolled in tortillas. I had gotten it together last night to have for lunch today forgetting I was going out to lunch with cowrokers. :headache:

Nancy - Glad y’all had a great time last night! Poor Buddy, he has had more than his share lately, hasn’t he. I’ll be keeping you both in my prayers. I’m very impressed with all of the cleaning you have gotten done!

Glynis – I am thrilled for you and your entire family!!! This is the best news I’ve had in a long time!:yay:

Gretchen – I enjoyed chatting with you this morning! My heart just aches when I think about your poor Hailey.:sad1:

Robin – Thanks for the link to that website, got to go check it out!!!!

Becky – I’m taking my laptop and plan on trying to post updates and pics, emphasis on trying! I’ll just post here if that’s OK with everyone.:goodvibes

Maria – Glad to hear the concert was great last night! Now you get to look forward to the weekend to celebrate!!:goodvibes

Ann – How did Luke make out?

Laura – Glad to hear that Caili is improving.:thumbsup2

Looks like I'd better call my Dr. in the AM, my ankle is still swollen, can't have that with WDW right around the corner!

Well Ladies, here I am again trying to catch up. I don't think it will ever happen. :lmao:

First and foremost ~

Glynis ~ YEA :cool1::woohoo: I am so happy for you - and the crowd said - AMEN!!!

Maria ~ Happy Birthday my friend. I hope your day is as special as you are. Liam is a cutie, I can tell why you are so smittem. What a cutie!!
I sent you a PM - Thanks!

Kat ~ I am so sorry for Kyle. Please tell him how proud I am of him for even trying.

Gretchen ~ Honey, enough is enough

Laura ~ Strep prayers for Caili. Glad she is feeling better.
Yea for Greg. You must be very proud. I will sen you a PM in a bit.

Marilyn ~ for your BFF, I am so sorry.

Lori ~ Good luck with the move decision

Lauren ~ you amaze me. Babies and the house is ready already. :worship:

Aimee ~ glad to hear Ace is doing so great.

Janice ~ Anything for Jay is appreciated. He has asked lately for Sprots magazines. If that helps any. Really anything you care to send is great. Thanks!

Sheryl ~ I will PM you with his address. Thanks!

Love and hugs to all that I have missed.

We ate at our favorite pub last night. It was Wednesday so off we went. We had to stop at the feed store for some grain for the horses and then we were a bit rushed for dinner. But not to worry Doug got to Bells and choir just in time.

It is a blustery day here today. The wind is blowing - they say it could blow to gusts of 60 MPH. It is cold, drizzly, cloudy and just plain nasty out today. YUCK!!

WFDT ~ Shrimp Scampi, garlic bread and a tossed salad.

Make it a great day my friends.

Ellen Thanks for the PM. What kinds of things can we send? Can we send baked goods, what kind do they like? I am new at this I have no clue.:confused3

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

You all are just the BEST. I am a bit overwhelmed at your thoughtfulness. I have PM'd all that have asked. I so appreciate your kindness.

Anything is so aprreciated. He has asked for sports and hunting, fishing magazines here lately. They always love home made goodies. Just remember not to send chocolate as it is still in the 100's over there. These men & women are still in very good spirits but they are getting homesick. So I think anything we can do to let them know how we appreciate them is a good thing. Jay has mentioned there are quite a few that get nothing and he always tries to share. I sent a football and frisbees in the last package and they are having a great time with those. DVD's, hand held games, jerky (thanks so much Lauri) drink mixes, chap stick or heck just about anything you want to send is perfect.

Thanks again everyone. Your really are the Best of the best.
