The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Do you think jewelry making would be doable for a nine year old girl?

Caili is eight and has all kinds of beading kits, which she loves. If she wants to make something fancy, I will put the clasps on for her, and then she just does the beading. She is not adept at the kits that require weaving (although she makes pretty good potholders) but in another year that may be within her ability.

This illness Caili has is the strangest thing. She just has a fever, no other symptoms. She has been as high as 103.7 and this morning's low was 99.3. The fever is making her a bit lethargic (which is probably good because she is resting) and her eyes, which are normally large, are even bigger than usual. Otherwise, she is fine. Her friend did have something similar a couple weeks ago, and it lasted five days. I am still calling the doctor tomorrow if the fever persists.

we are looking at condos when we head to Orlando in a couple of weeks

Good luck!

I hope the rest of you don't get it.

Thanks. So far, this seems to be a kid illness. Hopefully, I won't break the trend.

My neighbors won't put on the heat until November 1, no matter what. I admire them their fortitude, but if the house temperature goes to 60, the heat is on.

Just got the call from Kyle, he didn't make it.

I'm sorry he didn't make it, but he should be very proud to make it so far. He is a great young man, and he is going to be successful, no matter what he decides to do.

It just hurts me so much right now knowing my boy is sad and I can't help him.:sad1:

Believe me, you are helping him just by letting him know you are there if he needs you. That is very comforting.

Ellen -- I'm so sorry I have been lax about getting Jay's info. Now that baking season is starting up for me, I would be happy to send him some goodies, if that is what he would like. Your apple baking sounds delicious.

I ended up making blueberry pancakes and bacon for the kids, and Beck's standby BELT for me.

Buddy had another appointment at the Dr for his back yesterday, he was in agony. The Dr gave him some creme to put on the muscle and is sending him for an MRI. She does not think it is sciatica but wants to see what is going on there. It radiates all the way down his leg and around his waist. Yesterday I canceled my hair appointment to go with him, scheduled it fro Saturday, and yup...........the MRI is Saturday at the same time I scheduled my hair. I am going to look like I got plugged in somewhere!

Poor Buddy! Does he have some good pain meds, at least?

Well, Caili spiked a fever this afternoon, so no ballet and no school again tomorrow. I'll call the doctor if she still has a fever in the morning. Now I have to go figure out dinner with the meager supplies I have in the house.

There is a lot of illness going around. Everyone is freaked about swine, and it's worthy of caution, but there is also at least one or two viruses going around as well that are kicking people in the pants.

Nancy- I just made banana bread and remembered I had told you I'd post the recipe for you. This is the recipe I always make, I don't even bother looking at others, so simple and so tasty. I usually do half white half whole wheat flour and the kiddo doesn't mind- neither do I

Banana Bread

3 very ripe bananas, whipped
½ cup butter or margarine
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ cup walnuts

Cream butter and sugar, add eggs. Add flour and baking soda. Mix in bananas and nuts. Bake at 350*F for about 45 minutes.

Makes 3 small loaves, freezes very well.

Mmmm. I don't bake, but that looks easy. Think I'll have DH pick up bananas at the store - thanks! :thumbsup2

.......we are looking at condos when we head to Orlando in a couple of weeks!
We're torn- while we love NOLA and the people and friends we have there, we've just steadily gotten tired of the ordeal of living there. So, after much heartache and indecision, we've decided to look into relocating. Orlando suburbs- Kissimee, Lake Buena Vista, Winter Garden, etc get us close to the World, shopping, downtown districts have some incredible arts, and the airport is easy for us to get in and out of town with alot of options for work...

whew! There. I finally got it out.:headache:

BUT, if it works out, there'll always be an extra bedroom for my WFD gals!:cutie:

:yay: I remember how excited Mom was to get to move there. Have you looked in Davenport? That's where she lives and it's really nice. Close to the parks.

Just got the call from Kyle, he didn't make it. It came down to him and a left hander and they really needed another lefty on the squad. He sounded very disappointed but we both told him how proud we are of him and this now begins a new chapter in his life. Thanks to all for the good thoughts and prayers.:grouphug:

:sad1: I'm so sorry for him.

I had tacos for lunch and dinner today - they were yummy! And, I finally bought our return airfare (for 2 weeks we only had tickets to GET there, not get home!) and scored decent airfare for the day after Christmas.

Nan, what time does Buddy go Saturday? Could you go for your hair in the early a.m.?

Laura, poor Caili.......at least she's resting. Saying a prayer.

Wanted to share photos of Liam from Florida last week:love:
He makes life wonderful....

Nan, I'm sorry Buddy is hurting. I know what that pain is like. If they don't find anything in the MRI, he might want to consider a chiropractor. It helped my low back & leg pain for about 5 years.

EJ4Disney;33765771 Sheryl ~ I hope you're feeling better! How's our angel feeling these days? Tummy settling down some? Also I wanted to say thank you to all of you that have sent care packages to Jay. He has received them and so appreciates all of the prayers and good thoughts. Keep them coming as it is still very dangerous where he is at. From the bottom of my heart – THANKS!!!!!!!!![/QUOTE said:
Ellen, She is still having pain & frequent bathroom trips. Chris is started to worry, but trying to wait it out for the next few weeks (following the surgeon's advice.)

I'm glad you brought up Jay & the care packages. I'm sorry to say it had slipped through the swiss cheese that is my brain. I'll pm you to get his address. You'll also have to tell me again, what he needs.

Sheryl – I’m getting super excited about our trip too! Have you thought any more about a gift for Brenda?

Not really, I was hoping Maria had come up with something! ;)

Can we talk about it here? Does Brenda ever lurk around here?

Fun! You'll have to let me know if you get any good tips. I like to make jewelry, but I haven't had time lately.

Well, Caili spiked a fever this afternoon, so no ballet and no school again tomorrow. I'll call the doctor if she still has a fever in the morning. Now I have to go figure out dinner with the meager supplies I have in the house.

The class was fun but pretty basic. I spent way too much on the tools to start making stuff! We did earrings & a bracelet, I bought the beads to make a necklace.

That is unusual that her only syptom is fever. I hope she's okay tonight, prayers for your baby girl!

Sheryl- Do you think jewelry making would be doable for a nine year old girl? I was thinking of some stuff to get her started for Christmas since she already has everything under the sun.
If I can do it, a 7 year old can do it! (As Laura can attest to!)

.......we are looking at condos when we head to Orlando in a couple of weeks!
We're torn- while we love NOLA and the people and friends we have there, we've just steadily gotten tired of the ordeal of living there. .

I know that must be a tough decision. I'm glad we'll still be able to visit you!

Maria, He is a cutie! No wonder you are smitten, I love those blue eyes.:goodvibes

I agree with Sheryl, those eyes are gorgeous!!!!

Thanks to all of you for your kind words of support, I really appreciate it more than you know.:grouphug:

WFD - Grilled tuna over arugula with walnuts & gorgonzola.

Wishing everyone a great day!

Good Morning!

Kathy, Kyle did so well and got so far! I hope after the initial shock of not getting the position, he realizes that. Down to the last two...OMG, that is awesome. Send him hugs from me. How are you and Johnny?

Glynis, How are your Dad and family?

Laura, I hope Caili is feeling better today. Poor thing. Give her a great big hug for me...I know you are probably giving her many already. I get kind of sad sometimes because Andrew is out of that hugging and loving Mommy stage...I get it every once in a while. When he wants something!!!

Nancy, I hope Buddy finds some relief and they find whatever it is causing the pain.

Lori, I know the decision you made was hard but what a wonderful place to live! The way you and Rick travel, you will be back visiting your NOLA friends and they will visit you. I am so happy for you. I always loved Winter Garden when I lived there but that was 19 years ago...oh boy, do I feel old!

Maria, Liam is gorgeous! Those blue eyes! :lovestruc I have to call you...that walk a thon I mentioned to you ages ago is this coming Sunday. I never did anything but may go on my cousin's team. Let me know if you are interested or maybe we can meet up for a few minutes after. It will be me and T. Here is a link to the info.

It's My Heart (the North Jersey chapter was started by my cousin whose son was born with a heart defect):

Ellen, Hoping all goes the way you want and can share some great news with us soon!

Robin, Nice to see you posting often.

Aimee, How is Ace doing?

I think there was more that I needed to say but I lost my train of thought...my mind goes a mile a minute.

Tom starts his new job today. I hope he gets there on time...he is not such a morning person and at the other job he made his own hours.

Funny story...I stocked his fridge and pantry before we left and yesterday he was making a strip steak on the foreman, baked potato, salad and corn...Well, the potato was one that is wrapped in plastic and you microwave. He called me to ask how to cook it. I told him it should be written on the wrapper...but you microwave it. He said "it only says to cook 7 minutes". Well, duh, put it in the micro and nuke it for 7 minutes!!!! :lmao: The man is so book smart and has no common sense. I could write a best seller book on the stories.

Dinner is going to be very quick. I have a realtor coming at 6 tonight so not sure if we will eat before or after. I have to get this house somewhat in order. Dinner will be cheeseburgers...hmmm, or maybe take out. :goodvibes

Have a great day all!

I hae not rad back yet, just wanted to add some pics before heading to work.

Good Morning! It is beautiful here today!

Sheryl- Poor Alexis  She has been sick for so long, I hope that it goes away, just as the surgeon said.

Kat- I was glad to read that Kyle is not overlooking his accomplishments. He cannot take what he has done away because this is not his time. He gave his best and the last choice was of of his hands.

Laura- there are some crazy bugs going around. I hope that our Caili feels better soon. I can picture her with those huge Irish eyes and I'm afraid that it is a sad vision...

Lori- WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Orlando! My nephew lives there and would never leave. His sister came back "home" and I know she misses the food the shopping the clubs ...................

Maria- What a handsome boy! His features remind me of you!

We are going to the Big E tonight so dinner is going to be Fair Food :woohoo::woohoo:

I liked the Apple cake, Buddy was not fond of it. Honestly, I tried it again this morning and it was better today.

Ann- Make sure you check out LLBean's deal of the day, it's really cute and you're the only person I can think of with a little girl to fit in it- I don't think my nephew would appreciate it.

Lauren- My biggest fear is something happening to me, there is no way my husband could function without a detailed list. He would starve. I don't think he'd think to look at the wrapper of the baked potato.

Kathy- Sorry Kyle didn't get on the team.

Aimee- The only secret to banana bread is the bananas need to be overripe, brown and spotty and not one you'd want to eat.

Laura- For us, motrin works really well for high fevers-tylenol doesn't do anything. Hope she's better soon.

Maria- That dinner sounds really good, I think I've had the tapenade before, but never thought of adding it to pasta sauce.

Thanks for the opinions on jewelry making for the kiddo. I have to go to ACMoore today so I'll take a look while I'm there. I think she has the patience for things like that, and I sure don't need any more woven potholders. She has little kid beading kits, but I think she's ready for more (and something I might actually wear after receiving it!)

Don't know what's for dinner. Enjoy the day all!

Robin, I saw it. I was so tempted, but I am trying to control my spending. It was so darn cute and a great deal.

Maria -- Liam is so sweet! (Love the name, of course!) I agree with Nancy, he does look like you.

Nancy -- I hope Buddy gets some relief soon. Back pain is so debilitating.

Sheryl -- I'm sorry Alexis is still having issues. I hope she feels better soon. Jewelry-making really is an investment isn't it? Don't tell Greg though! ;)

I get kind of sad sometimes because Andrew is out of that hugging and loving Mommy stage...I get it every once in a while. When he wants something!!!

Liam is like that too. Every once in a while, I get a real hug, but most of the time, he either wants something or he is trying to bug Caili. She gets jealous. Good luck getting the house together today! Your story about Tom had me laughing.

Robin -- I agree with you on tylenol. I never use that unless it is a really bad fever and the doctor says to alternate medications. AC Moore has a lot of cool jewelry-making kits that would be appropriate for your daughter. They get in even more as it gets closer to Christmas.

Thanks everyone for wishing Caili well. She isn't awake yet this morning, but hopefully, she feels better. We are supposed to go to her Curriculum Night this evening. I don't know what is for dinner yet. It is going to depend on how Caili is feeling and whether Liam is able to get to his gymnastics class. I will have Caili make up her class another day.

Becky- I don't do facebook, did you get a prize for first place?

Yes, I won two round trip tickets on Air Jamaica.

Just got the call from Kyle, he didn't make it.

Kathy, I am sorry he didn't make it. He went really far though and he must be proud of what he achieved! Now he can concentrate on his studies, and find his next window.

Lori, have fun condo hunting! You'll have lots of options. It would be cool to live so close to the mouse! I'm not sure if I could handle the heat myself, but I guess that would not be a problem for someone from New Orleans!

I think dinner tonight is going to be corn chowder.

Mmmm. I don't bake, but that looks easy. Think I'll have DH pick up bananas at the store - thanks! :thumbsup2

Just remember to get the bananas that look the worst, all black and yucky! Those make the best bread!

Good morning! Our weather here is reflecting my mood lately; dark, gloomy and very rainy! Fall has come! In fact, we may end up with snow this afternoon, in the mountains by our house.

Dad has an appointment with a local oncologist tomorrow morning, and my brother is going with him. I've bombarded him with questions to ask, so hopefully, we'll get some concrete answers then. After that, I'm planning on getting my dad to come to the cancer center just north of us. It's one of the best in the country, and they have oncologists that specialize in all types of cancer.

Dad is back in a positive frame of mind, and is willing to accept that his children are going to be included in his treatment, no matter what! That took a lot of doing, but I'm glad he's realized that it's not good to try to do something like this on his own.

Dinner tonight will be Italian ravioli stew in the crock pot! Perfect for a blustery day! I'll also make some biscuits to go along with it.

Have a great day, everyone! I'm keeping Caili in my prayers. That fever is perplexing. I'm glad you are going to contact the doctor. When we went through our bout with swine flu, Mary only ever got a fever, but it went up and down for about 3 days.

Hi ya’ll! Trying to catch up here.

Maria, Liam is a cutie!

Wow! Snow! We are finally getting some cooler weather here. It was 59 by me this morning and will be sunny and in the low 80's.
I’m glad to hear your Dad is in a positive frame of mind, and that he is accepting help from his family. This truly is a family battle.

Yes, I won two round trip tickets on Air Jamaica.

Wow - thats great!! Again, congratulations!

Thanks everyone for wishing Caili well. She isn't awake yet this morning, but hopefully, she feels better. We are supposed to go to her Curriculum Night this evening. I’m sorry that Caili is still not well. Prayers and well wishes that she will finally beat this bug!

Good Morning!
Tom starts his new job today. I hope he gets there on time...he is not such a morning person and at the other job he made his own hours.

Good luck to Tom on his first day. That’s funny about the potato. My daughter (19 at the time) burned up our microwave because she put 2 very small potatoes in, set the time for 15 minutes and walked off. This was one month after we had moved into our new house and we were not home at the time. Man did the house smell. We need to replace the microwave as well.

Buddy had another appointment at the Dr for his back yesterday, he was in agony. The Dr gave him some creme to put on the muscle and is sending him for an MRI. Robin & Laura, thanks just a mood I needed to snap myself out of. Stupid...felt like PMS on steroids! :scared1:

Everyone has moods, so don’t be too hard on yourself, you really have a lot on your plate with two small kids.
Ive just had the most horrendous visit to the dentist. I had a tooth extracted and it was just awful.
Ended up with two dentists, broken root, drilling, a scalpel and I got in such a state I passed out in the chair. Im going to have a good cry and head to bed.
Im still numb and my meds have kicked in but Its gonnae be sore...:sad1:
Might not be around so take care of you and yours.

Yuck! They would've had to knock me out to keep me from running out of there! I sure hope you are feeling better by now. :scared1:

Dinner will either be sloppy joes or italian sausage in red gravy.
I know I'm missing some - hugs to all!

Thanks for the welcome backs all. I appreciate it. Things have been kind of hectic here, and I guess that since Rick started talking to people about it, I can too.......

Prayers still out there for Glynis' Dad and Kyle.

Vickie... Dentist= ouch! :scared1:

I had leftovers for a late lunch so I may just skip dinner tonight. Otherwise it's panfried perch and sweet potato with salad.

Hey Lori! Congrats on the move; I hear ya on the heartache and the ordeal of it all. I still can't drive thru Lakeview, it just hurts too much seeing all the changes. Its' great that ya'll are able to go to Orlando and be close to the Mouse.

The class was fun but pretty basic. I spent way too much on the tools to start making stuff! We did earrings & a bracelet, I bought the beads to make a necklace.

Sorry to hear that Alexis is still struggling to return to normal. I'm sure it just takes time, but I understand Chris' concern.

Glad you enjoyed the beading class. Both my DIL and DD do beading and make a lot of gifts with it.

Becky, I'm so happy for you not to mention your photo is gorgeous!

Kat, Sheryl, Charlene & Lauren~ I spoke to Lauren before we left & we would like to send a wine themed basket when we're at Disney to Brenda. Is that ok with all?

Glynis, glad your brother is going with your Dad...prayers continued.

Robin, the tapanade gave it a really nice taste. I will be keeping those items on hand for a back up meal. I'm going to TJs Friday to stock up.

Nan, poor Buddy. After watching DM this last 1 1/2 years with back pain my heart breaks for him.

Tonight I have my Bruce concert with DM! bbl

Maria -- Have fun tonight!

Glynis -- I am glad your dad is accepting help. The more people involved to help fight, the better.

Thank you all once again for the prayers and well-wishes for Caili. I found out what is wrong. She has strep throat. The doctor could not believe she never complained about a sore throat and that she has been eating normally. She obviously has a high pain threshold, and I am going to have to be a lot more vigilant when these fevers pop up.

Anyway, we will go get the antibiotic shortly, and she should feel better in the next couple of days.

Wanted to share photos of Liam from Florida last week:love:
He makes life wonderful....

What a cutie patootie!!

Aimee, How is Ace doing?

How nice of you to ask! :goodvibes I actually saw him Sunday for the first time since he left my house and he is doing FAB! he looooooooves my brother, and really didn't care we were there. Sniffed, greeted us, went back to my brother. He is a little whiny when my brother leaves (even if someone else is home) but he's just going through seperation anxiety which is normal for a dog in a new home that bonds with their owner. He cuddles with the cat (), is able to be off leash a lot of the time, and is sleeping on his own bed next to my brothers bed. Couldn't be better :thumbsup2

Aimee- The only secret to banana bread is the bananas need to be overripe, brown and spotty and not one you'd want to eat.

Thanks for the tip!

I hope answers are found  I'm glad your dad has reached that point. My grandfather has still not and it's hard on the two kids.

My gosh, she does have a strong pain threshold! Crazy girl! She should be back to normal within a couple of days now that you can get the antibiotic down her.

Wanted to pass on something I learned this morning - avoid those plug in scented air fresheners. You know like Glade plug ins, and B&BW Wallflowers? I put one in my entryway about 2 months ago - we've never used them before. Winston, one of my pups, has been having horrid allergies recently which I blamed on the changing seasons. DH took him to the vet this morning and she said his allergy is obviously an inhaled allergen and did we have any plug in air fresheners? Sure enough, his allergy started about 2 months ago! I did some research since he told me that and found that kids who live in homes with them have more ear infections than those who don't. And I'm sure I'm inhaling it and it's not helping my allergy/asthma any, either.

Who would have thought?

Just wanted to pass it on in case someone else uses them and deals with allergies in animals or people.

Tonight is church night. I think I'm going to run and get something for lunch and eat my Lean Cuisine for dinner since I'm stuck here.
