The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Wow, lots to catch up on here today. It was a crazy busy day for us...gymnastics, skating, Farmer's Market, baseball game...so I can't promise I got everything, but I'll try.

Welcome back, Stephanie! That is really strange about your parents not spending time with you. Maybe they thought you wanted time to yourselves? :confused3

Let me get preachy... don't discount disappointments and hardships in your life due to others having it "worse off." There will always be someone worse off than all of us, but that doesn't make our pain any less painful or our struggles any less difficult.

Very well said! As far as your question, I would just look at what you are spending for the entire week, rather than focusing in on one day. I love Disney in December! I can see your ticker now. :thumbsup2

Now our next project is bottles.

Let me know if you need some. I am more than willing to ship empties if I get the occasional one returned full. ;)

Ann -- I'm sorry you're dealing with car troubles.

Alexis also told Chris yesterday that she "LIKES" a boy at camp & she told him she liked him!:sad1: Not already!

Oh no! It starts so young, doesn't it? At least for now, Caili is above boys. She can agree with her friends that some of the boys are cute, but she doesn't LIKE them. I hope you are feeling okay.

Marilyn -- Good luck catching your little pest.

Gretchen -- I'm sure Hailey will brighten your dad's day.

Lauren -- You are dealing with a lot right now. It does sound like the surgery is the right option for you.

Tomorrow I'll take Leslie out and try to have a nice experience there, too. She's a little more high maintenance.

Have fun! Caili is high maintenance too. The last time she was at the dentist she was all upset and crying because they didn't have the right FREE toothbrush that she wanted. Now try telling her that the store doesn't have the shoe she spent a half hour deliberating over and picking out in her size. Not pretty.

One thing I do understand about fresh produce, is that the prettiest ones aren't always the tastiest.

That is so true! Some of the heirloom tomatoes around here look completely deformed, but they are delicious. I always pick ugly limes...they are juicier.

Your kids sound like they are being raised right, and I'm always amazed at how committed they are to their activities. :goodvibes

Thanks!

After I picked Liam up from camp this afternoon, I decided to try to figure out a back way to get from there to the house because there is a lot of road construction along our usual route. Well, I am embarrassed to admit that I got hopelessly lost and ended up two towns away. That really cut down on the amount of time I had to make dinner, so we had grilled hotdogs, corn on the cob and salad. Then I had to bring Liam to his baseball game, which they won, so they are still playing. The team did play well. I am not so excited that the next game is tomorrow, and I will miss some of SYTYCD.

I will DVR it for you Laura :)

Here is dinner. I made John a burger (no pics), and myself an avocado BLT. As you can tell from the size, I only ate half. John is excited because he gets to bring the other half for his lunch tomorrow.

Aimee, I just read back and saw your question about the Dolphin. You got such a good rate for the other days that I think splurging for Christmas makes sense. You are not going to get a bargain rate anywhere on that day anyway, and if you are at the Dolphin you are at walking distance to EPCOT, which will be the least crowded park. Just average out the cost of that one night with the bargain you got at the Comfort Inn and it will seem reasonable overall. ;) If you don't want to go into the park itself you can always walk over and watch Illuminations from the bridge to the International Gateway entrance. Plus, the Dolphin has the Heavenly Beds, right? I think both Swan and Dolphin have them, though Dolphin is a Sheraton. I LOVE the Heavenly Beds.

Ok, here's a couple of recipes.

Those both sound so good. There is a really good bread bakery right up the road, may have to make a trip over there and get some to make one of these with.

Good thing I was alone and no one witnessed my punch a defenseless chair.

:rotfl:

Didn't get the mouse traps, Target didn't have the ones I want and my DM said WalMart doesn't have them either. She is going to run to Home Depot and look for them tomorrow.

Bethany- The grease thing reminds me. I was moving a shelving unit several months after we had the first mouse here and found a chicken wing bone underneath it. :rotfl:

He was the only mouse we have had that behaved himself and climbed in the nice humane trap. Although he was a little rude and came back in the house and right back in the trap after I threw him in the woods out back. :rotfl: The 2nd time I drove him a mile away, should have charged him gas money. ;)

Congrats to Liam and his team & good luck tonight!:thumbsup2

WFD - Mexican chicken Kiev, salsa rice & corn.

Good Morning!

Aimee-Your GI guy is great! Thank goodness he is on top of your recovery :thumbsup2

Kat- Glad you like the Wrinkle Release! I have looked for recipes for Febreeze and this was actually on of them. Some are made with baking soda and with white vinegar as well. I am going to spritz some on my shower curtain and teh towelsd on the towel bar to see how it works. I can toss them in the washer if I don't like how it dries, the furniture is harder to clean. I am going to send some to Donny. I love him, he is a brilliant man and he owns nice dress shirts. Unfortunately he always looks like an unmade bed :sad2: and my offers to wash and iron his work clothes have been declined.

Merle- I am :lmao::lmao: over your battles with your mouse. I should not though because I am afraid that if one gets in my house my kitties will hide and I will need to catch him :scared1:
We have a garden snake thing out in teh yard, he just sleeps in my flower pot. Buddy scared him adn he tried to get up into the siding. WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went out and there is a shovel perched up againt my steps. :confused3 Buddy told me that I had to kill him if he came out. Okay. We'll just se how THAT works out. We have since negotiated the little guy a reprieve. He stays in my flower pot and he gets a pass. He tries to move int o the siding and Buddy has to catch him and move him into the woods down the street. The shovel is gone.

Becky- Now I know how you can have all those good things to eat. You only eat half! I have no control so if you gave me that sandwich....you would have crumbs to share with John after dinner

Laura- I cannot wait to share my wine with all of you! It will not be ready to drink until Christmastime I think. I have an old table that I have some bins on. I need to bring to Welby's house because we have 3 carboys on hers and we want to start two more kinds. Need more room!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have given Buddy a mission to talk Brian into brainstorming the guys at work to craft a stirring thing that works on a drill. You can buy one in the store but we want one for free and have more money for wine supplies. We also priced a good corker but have decided that we will keep our cheap one and use Buddy for corking. He is also free :thumbsup2

Good luck to Liam tonight!

Sheryl- I agree that the ugly tomatoes taste the best! Now take it easy today and enjoy all your "field trips"!

Bethany- no hurricane talk!

Janice- what a nice son you have! Cheesecake samplers are :cloud9:

Glynis- I am not looking at french toast recipes........I am not looking at french toast recipes................I am not looking at french toast recipes...................now please let me believe it :worship::worship:

I am :confused3 about dinner. Lately Buddy does not feel like eating a real meal. Tonight I have a ladies WW support meeting at Marisa's that we all can attend and was going to make stuffed peppers. He is :snooty:. I don;t know. Maybe I'll cook him eggs adn I'll have a bowl of cereal or a salad. We'll se what the day brings.

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl: About the snake! I can just see you out there holding a diplomatic summit with a snake in a flower pot.

I prefer to be in blissful denial about the H word. I wanted to know if the hot, in the 90s every day with the pop up thundershowers complete with these insane downpours was normal. I can give you the weather report for the rest of the month, based on the last month:

High 80s by 9am
Mid to high 90s by noon
Pop up, isolated thundershowers in the afternoon
Lows in the mid to high 70s overnight

Throw in a few map pictures, the words "southeast Louisiana" every other sentence, some "lake breeze", "sea breeze", "microburst", and "humid" every so often and you could fill in for the local weatherman.

You've got it down girlfriend!:thumbsup2

Quickly checking in this morning. We didn't make it to see Dad last night. When I got home, Hailey had a runny nose. I didn't want to take the chance it could be a cold she could pass along, so I'm giving it a couple of days to see.

Kat - I was the one talking about the blueberry french toast. It is make ahead and you make the blueberry syrup on the day you serve it. I don't have the recipe here at work, but I'll post it tonight if you want it.

Morning all! Last night the troops had breakfast for dinner, so I think tonight will be enchiladas.

Sheryl--I feel the pain on the school supplies. My baby starts kindergarten 2 weeks from today :sad1: and we've had to buy uniforms, school specific shirts, new shoes, school supplies--and then we still have to go up to the school and buy the stuff we can only get there (at least according to them) Welcome to private school, I guess. Time to start eating on a budget. Hope you're not in pain anymore.

Kathy--when does your DS head to LSU? Thanks for the PM--all cool here!

Well, as I posted above Emma starts kindergarten on the 19th, 2 weeks from today. I'm already a mess. I've had her almost 24/7 for 5 1/2 years and now she'll be with someone else for most of her day. She's totally excited and ready to go. I'm gonna be a sobbing fool in the parking lot dropping her off. Who let her grow up so fast?

Kathy - I found another recipe for a blueberry breakfast french toast. I haven't tried it, so I can't vouch for the flavor, but it sounds yummy. I'll post it here in case you want to be my guinea pig.

Blueberry Breakfast

12 slices French bread, cubed, divided
2 (8oz) pkg. cream cheese, cubed
2 C. fresh or frozen blueberries
12 large eggs
1/3 C. maple syrup
2 C. milk

Grease a 9 X 13-inch baking dish. Place half the bread cubes in prepared dish. Scatter cream cheese over the top. Sprinkle cream cheese with the blueberries and cover with remaining bread cubes. Blend eggs, syrup and milk and pour evenly over all. Cover tightly with foil and refrigerate overnight. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake, covered, 30 minutes. Uncover and bake 30 minutes more. Serve with blueberry syrup.

So....I just remembered that I microwaved a couple of ears of corn to serve with the sandwiches last night. They are still in the microwave.

WFD tonight: something easy--maybe pasta fresca. I haven't started packing for Bermuda yet, and John's at a work function tonight so I have to pack both of our bags.

Hi Girls, BBL to catch up.

Having a busy morning around here. DSS is coming over tonight for dinner. He broke up with his girlfriend recently :woohoo: (she wasn't our favorite) and has more free time now. Also, my DSD got engaged recently. :rolleyes1
It is a good thing because it is to DSGS's dad, but they have alot of growing up to do. I hope it works out.

WFD- Chicken parm with penne, caesar salad, and brownies.

Today is Leslie's turn to go shopping with mom. Wish us luck! I know she'll want everything she tries on, and it's going to be a task to limit her to what she needs.

Dinner tonight will be bruschetta chicken skillet. If I can find some good corn on the cob I'll do some of that with lemon pepper butter.

When do you leave??? I must have missed another trip for you all. Have fun and plenty of beverages for us!

My DM gave me a Talbots gift card she was not going to use yesterday. She wanted me to treat myself to some after baby new clothes. I had so much fun shopping online this morning. I got three diff. sweaters with matching tanks/camis, and a quilted vest. The best part was I only had to pay $19 out of my pocket.:cool1:

Hold on tight Steph, the time flies. I can remember Kyle's first day of kindergarten like it was yesterday. She'll be fine and you're right, you'll be a mess!!!!

My baby moves into his apartment on 8/15......:sad1:

Wow, lots of changes with the family!!

It's Wednesday, and sadly we're back to our regular schedule. It was nice while it lasted! I will be here until 9pm or so; I'll grab something to eat here - they have a pretty good selection on Wednesdays. DH is on his own.

Kat is right, time will fly! I also remember the first day Donny went to school. I cried and cried. I admit I also cried when he graduated but that was because I never was sure right up until he received that diploma that he would graduate.

Ann- are congrats in order? Engagements are "supposed" to be joyful but I find that they are generally bittersweet.

Ron is okay with it all, which I think surprised DSD (22). Part of growing up is making your own decisions, and dealing with the results. I just hope they are ready and doing it for the right reasons. Her fiance is enlisting in the Army, and they are planning on getting married by October before he would leave.
I hope it all works out for their son, but to date their relationship has been a rollercoaster. I don't mean to sound negative I just have my doubts that either one is ready to grow up so fast, and has an idea of what lies ahead.
I hope I expressed clearly how I am feeling.
