The Villas at Disney's Grand Californian Owners & Lovers Group - 3.0

I was in a 2BR at VGC last week and we got a renovated room on the 5th floor. I didn’t see any construction on VGC rooms while I was there but I didn’t go looking for it. The room was overall in great shape, although I’d be disappointed if they don’t end up doing some updates in the bathrooms, especially for what is supposed to be a hard goods refurb. The new Murphy bed was great, and I prefer the new flooring to the old carpet. It doesn’t look like they really changed any of the wood or tile, but appliances seemed new.

We were in a 5th floor 1BR. Yes, all of the appliances are new. Also, the kitchen door hardware was changed to soft-close -- just give them a light push and they slowly and quietly close. We talked to the plumbers and they said any plumbing updates are done on an as-needed basis only.

Overall, we were very happy with the room.

Disney's been on a roll lately with their refurbs but this one... seems like a dud? It's certainly the most dull out of their recent output. And no artwork on the Murphy bed in the living room is certainly a choice.

Everyone, if you get a survey, please request better lighting and a non-jetted tub.

Thanks! 😁

Personally…. if this is “it”….and the dues growth rate remains really low…. I’m OK with it….

I don’t love a skunk as the main artwork over the bed and not having any artwork in the twin pullout is weird….
My wife read the article and my response and here is her commentary:

1) “A skunk!” with her hand over her heart…. “How could you do that to Flower? I love flower! He is so cute.”

2) “No art behind the twin pulldown…. that is low!”

3) “They changed nothing about the bathroom? Not even a new tub or shower head?”

I agree with her completely. Smart woman.

The rooms look pretty but I’m really surprised by the lack of changes. Feels much more like a soft refurb. But beyond that, I’d be most worried about what the bathrooms and tiles and unchanged elements will look like in 7-14 years when they’d next be addressed…it doesn’t take long for things to go from fine to really rough…

It looks from the pics like they didn't change out the existing single (twin) pull down bunk, so it makes sense that they wouldn't just go in and add art to what already existed. Hopefully they changed the mattress, as the one my kids used was pretty terrible.

The villa we were in was definitely showing signs of wear and tear and I'm not sure this refurb has done much to address it. Fixing the cabinetry to have soft-close hinges is one thing but the kitchen cabinet drawers were all in need of replacement/fixing, for example.

All in all I don't understand this refurb as a hard goods refurb. If I owned at VGC I would be annoyed, haven't the dues gone into building up capital reserve just for this? IDK.

I'm asking this in the most respectful, polite way possible, but I am meaning to generate some specific conversation:

Do you think these refurbs put the VGC 1BRs on the same level aesthetically as a 1BR at VGF?

If the answer is "no," do you feel that the two resorts should be held to a different standard?

I'm not super familiar with the rooms at VGF. Is there something special about them compared to other 1 bedroom villas?

I guess it depends on perspective. I've never stayed in one, but the lack of 2nd bathroom drops the room down in my book.
Of the 17 properties only 5 have a second bathroom and they were all built around the same time. AKL Kidani, BLT and VGC followed by VDH & PIT.
AUL has an extra half bath in the dedicated 2 bedroom.

It certainly does stink that more don’t have the extra bathroom but it is what it is.
