The Villages - Anyone live here?

We have been looking for a retirement community in Fl and came across this one. It seems too good to be true. Any information appreciated. Thanks

I was recently told by a doctor here in Florida, that The Villages has the highest rate of reported STDs in the state of Florida. Sounds like a pretty wild place to live!

We can giggle (go on, it's ok ) but it's a serious issue.

Older people simply don't get the whole significance of protected sex. HIV+ status is fast growing among older adults.

Viagra without condoms is probably not a great combination.

Plus I've heard that while back in the 70's there were like 5 common STDs now there are like 50 variations. I wonder if this is true?

Wow, that is just something that I have seriously never thought about! (Not condoms but the high rate of STDs at the Villages!)

I was recently asked about the Villages by a couple looking to buy a home there. They knew that, because of relatives, I have been there many times and visited extensively. I've had an opportunity to participate in a number of their activities and can tell you that I think it is a very nice place with warm, kind, helpful, and caring folks. I think it is better than any of the ads that I have seen for it. I also think it has maintained property values better than many places in Florida especially those around Orlando. The couple did visit and ended up moving to the Villages. They love it and have only good comments about the place.

I personally have not encounted the 'wild' side that some of the earlier posters mentioned. As with any other area of the country, I think it exists, but do not see that as a dominating issue. Perhaps, it all depends on who you choose as friends.

I do think there is a regular poster on this board that does live there with his wife. Hopefully, he can add to my comments and give you a more thorough idea about the community.

My aunt and uncle live there and love it. I've never visited them there, though. If I'm headed to Florida you'll find me at Disney

The first thing you should do is go online to thevillages.com and ask for the free DVD and they will send it to you, probably along with other information. Yes, the DVD will seem like The Villages is too good to be true, but there's just too much going on here to fit into one DVD so things here are even better than the DVD.

You can arrange to come visit and stay in a guest cottage for less than a hotel. You really do have to see to believe. You will be given a trolley tour showing you some of the various homes and neighborhoods (there is no hard sell - they are still building and people are still buying).

The deal regarding the STD press goes back to an article about older folks in general and The Villages was used as an example simply because we're so big. Local doctors said there are no more than anyplace else, but this is called "Florida's friendliest home town!" Like anything else, if you go looking for something, you'll likely find it.

We're towards the southern end and that's where all the new building is going on. From here, we can be in WDW in an hour, sometimes less. Orlando airport is about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. Either cost is an hour and a half and within easy day trip distance.

We'll be here five years in October and have no regrets. We've made many great friends here. You can relax as much as you want or be as busy as you want. Between my music and my wife's theater groups, we sometimes need a vacation from retirement.

My parents looked into the Villages & said it wasn't for them. They said it was much too big & spread out. Plus they're only in their early '60s & from NY- they said driving around there was a nightmare.

They ended up with a great place about 15 minutes away called Summer Glen. It's for 55+ but you wouldn't know it just driving in. Plus, it's only a 35 minute drive to WDW- with my mom driving , my dad it takes about 45-60 min.

I apologize for not including this in my very first post, not doing so implies something less than positive about the Villages.

It is a very popular area for retired folks to live. There are many, many good things about the place, and yes it is huge!

The area has become a focal point for the other matter, because of the high number of retired people. That combined with the reality that STDs (HIV+ status in particular) are growing at an alarming rate in this population is a mitigating factor for The Villages to be linked with unprotected sex.

Several years ago Judy and looked there. At the time Judy was in a wheelchair and they really did not want to talk to us. And, for an adult community, we were extremely surprised that there really was no indication of accessibility or disabled parking at the Sales Center.

Also, from what I read in the newspapers, it would help a lot if your political affiliation was Republican to live there.

Good call! Solivita is a lovely place!!! (Your general estimation of the Villages is accurate, by the way).

There was a sort of "awareness" campaign. Some representatives of the community attended the classes I was conducting, and then took the information home.

"When do you intent to stop?" That question always jerks the audience into reality.

Now then, lets discuss this new world in which you are having sexual contact...

And so it goes...

Other issues at the villages though other than indiscriminate behaivor. (But again, MANY people really like it there. Rather like Disney, eh? Something for everyone, regardless of your individual preferences... retirement in Florida, I mean).
