The vikings are coming!!!!!!

My DH just had these done and just had to show them off. Yes, I'm shameless!! He combined our 2 passions, Disnelyland and the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). The SCA is a living history group that we are apart of. When I'm not planning DL trips we are busy with our SCA events. I am going to sew these onto our hoodies, just in time for our May trip!!!

The closest thing we have the is the Mickey-ear family stickers for the rear window of our van (not nearly as cool as what you have).... Which we haven't put on yet because we aren't sure we are keeping the van for much longer and we don't want to sacrifice our "other selves".....

Hazaa!!!! We started out in Kingdom of Caid, now we are in Outlands (The Windkeep Shire). Who knows where next. I just hope that where ever we go we will be closer to the Disney parks (DL or WDW), and closer to either Estrella or Pensic!!!! Here's hopeing!!!

Have you ever been to either? I've only been involved for 4 years and unfortunately, my work schedule always conflicts with Pennsic.

My sister has been to Pennsic many times. She teaches several classes there and her household has bee the royal household a number of times. So that must be really cool.

I WILL get there one day.

I was very curious about SCA, as I love reading about those times (don't do enough of it now I come to think of it. I may have to head to the library over this vacation) and watching movies set in those times.

SCA looks VERY interesting. I found an Australian site, and have found a group in Perth, so I am heading back there in a minute to do some more reading. They have an event coming up on a long weekend, but I'm not sure whether you can just go along to check it all out in 'normal' attire, or whether we would look out of place. I may have to give someone a call to see.

The SCA is definitely open to the public, because they want to educate on the ways of medieval life. I know people that garden (and cook of course, yum) they way they did back then!! SCA people try to be as accurate to the times as possible, even to the type of dyes they use to color their wool that they spin themselves!! The heavy fighters are they safest around. There is a statistic that SCA heavy fighters have less injuries than bowlers!!

Go, to the event in Perth. I highly recommend it and if you have to go "naked" (wear normal clothes) they will understand. Ask tons of questions, people love to talk about their crafts, armour, weapons, garb, persona's, and food (just to name a few). Have a great time and PM me on your adventure. Love to hear how they do it in Australia!!

An old friend of mine, Sheridon, was somewhat recently king of Lohac.

My husband and I are both retired SCA peers (from Calontir) - living in Los Angeles. (I joined back in 1982 and was a costuming laurel - he was a Caidan knight.) We haven't played in quite a while, although my husband still goes to fighter practice (since it's across the street from our house). I'm too busy to even consider going back. My DIS work (and my job and kids) pretty much sealed that door.

Boy - you should see some of the garb designs I came up with that incorporated the hidden Mickey..... I'd be happy to let you use the concepts if you applique....

I did Pennsic from # 12 through # 21. they were a lot of fun back then. I fought with the Calontir Army, but hung with folks from a lot of other places. Knew quite a few Easterners, Outlanders, Midrealmers, Meridians, and Atlantians in my younger days.... One of my students was even a Baroness in the Outlands (Mistress Raishika? - she changed her name after moving there...)

SCA was really good for me during the time I spent there (over 23 years). My life just got too busy for it.

My sister is well on her way to her costuming laurel. Not too long ago she was awarded the Order of the Mauche, which in the East Kingdom is a Kingdom award for Arts and Sciences. It's the step before peerage here for those in costuming. Her personna is 10th century Ukranian. She is a beading/embroidering/embellishing fiend. She is in Haus VDK (household) of Their Graces Lucan and Jana von Drakenklaue. Lucan had been king 7 times, so I'm sure at least one of the Pennsics you were at fell during his reign.

I'm a hanger-on Really it's that I have many hobbies and so the SCA comes and goes. My personna is 15th century French. So it's classic burgunidan's with henins for me. I look like the tile murals in the castle at WDW

I"m very new to the SCA myself (5years new). I didn't know anything about it till I met my DH. He was a heavy fighter in the Barony of Calafia, Kingdom of Caid. Then we moved up here to the Outlands.
He started out as Viking and it just kind of stuck and the kids love to boff as vikings. I like it because it's an easy garb to make. I sew to make do and I am learning as I go and when I have time. I am a momma of 4 and we homeschool. Our SCA seasons are very short around here and when winter comes it's difficult to get in the SCA mood, ya know.
Fighter practice started up 2 weeks ago, after being "dark" since October and we had our first archery (and burger burn) yesterday at Duke Olaf's house. I hope our next base (Air Force) is in a kingdom that is able to stay active year round.
Because I am new everything interests me but finances and time is disableing me to explore more. Didn't realize what an expensive hobby the SCA is! Mistress Aldyth is helping me with making garb for my growing boys. And everyone in our Shire is very helpful with handme downs and ideas on how to make this hobby work for our budget.
If any of your ladies have more ideas, advice, websites.... could you PM me? Like I said, still learning here and could use all of the advice from seasoned SCA members. Thanks.

I would love to take a peek at your applique's. I don't know what applique's arebut would love to look at them. Would I be able to do something like that on viking garb?

I don't think I know who Mistress Raishika is but I'll ask around. I like to see how small our world really is

SCA is being very good to us too. We are having fun also and teaching the children about chivarly is important to me.

Lot's of vikings in the 2 Vermont shires for the exact same reason you mentioned The archers and fighters here are active year round. The two shires each find an indoor place to practice (both of them are school gyms) and the fighters go to one shire one week and the other shire the next throughout the (long) winter. Winter is too long here to go that long without fighting. The shire south also does archery all winter. They found a local indoor range and arrange several shoots throughout the winter (although I haven't done any shooting since last summer).

It's really a small world, as we are friendly Lucan and are friends with Sir Marcellus - who is a VDK out here in Caid. Lucan came to Vegas for his knighting. Lucan's close friend Duke Alaric and I have known each other since our teens. I hung with the Von Halsterns many many moons ago - I remember when Max was hitting puberty and knew Sir Trystan? (god rest his soul) when he had hair. Manfred was much thinner, too.

I went by (Mistress) Corisander Seatwaite (some of my old articles can still be found online - under Ms. Cori) and I specialized in 14th and 15th C. I joined when Calontir was part of the Midrealm and I've watched a lot of folks "grow up" and become famous peers of the Knowne World.

My time has come and gone and now you are the generations to carry the torches. I know you'll do the organization proud!
