Polluting, genetic engineering, obscene riches, taking drugs, abortion, pedophilia and causing social injustice join the original seven deadly sins defined by Pope Gregory the Great in the sixth century: pride, envy, gluttony, greed, lust, wrath and sloth.

Gianfranco Girotti, head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, responsible for absolving Catholics from their sins, named the new mortal sins in an interview with the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, yesterday.

Works for me. More of an emphasis on how what we do affects others in these new ones. Obscene riches would kind of be greed though-unless they are referring to those who have exploited or continue to exploit others in their quest for those obscene riches.

So if you are into obscene riches I guess you have to switch to scientology?

I also find it alarming that polluting was first and Pedophilia was number 6!!

From reading up on this, it seems that they are talking more about people who have exploited others in order to gain the riches, rather than the riches themselves. I think they just didn't express the concept well initially.

"Obscenely rich" by who's definition? In some ways of looking at it every single DISer would be considered obscenely rich.

Read the article and see my previous comment. I believe they are talking more about people who gained such riches by exploiting others, rather than just people who happen to have a lot of money.

But who knows? What was that line from the bible about a camel and the eye of a needle? ;)

the original seven were not listed in any kind of hierarchical order-ALL are mortal sins and are equally bad. I would think that this list is the same.

Doesn't anyone it just a little "amazing" that an individual can do this? I just shake my head at the blind following ...

Kathee, yup an atheist, thank gawd, lol

You poor Catholics...no more polluting for you. ;) And if you don't buy Girl Scout cookies, is that a social injustice?

Just kidding. I do find this quite interesting after all this time the list got updated.

Doing drugs...which ones? Illegal? What if it's legal in one country and not in another?

Considering the Catholic Church gives out small dosages of drugs at every single Mass (umm...wine does contain alcohol, right?), you'd think they'd want to be a little more specific about that one, at least. :lmao:

Couldn't the ban of same-sex marriage be seen as "causing social injustice"?

Just a question, not a comment, but it kind of baffles me...

I think the real focus of the change is to make Catholics more aware of the consequences of sin upon others around them. I don't think the legality enters into it. Abusing legal drugs can have equally painful consequences for people around that abuser.

Have you tasted the altar wine? :scared: I'm not sure what it qualifies as......

And personally, I think the new ones are just specifics that can fall under some of the older categories. No need to create any special new "sins" - I think the original ones were working just fine.
