The Vaccine Discussion Thread

Huh. Has your stance on never trying to educate people about risk changed?

I haven't tried to educate people on vaccines. I don't know enough about vaccines to do that. I'm just pointing out stats that can easily be looked up with a quick google search. It's not that hard to look at risk levels and decide for yourself if you need a vaccine. The posts you quoted were opinions.

I'm not trying to be snarky either, but my teenager already has immunity. Yet gets treated like he doesn't.
Gotcha. I did not/do not understand why you'd phrase it as "I'm just curious why you think teenagers should get the vaccine. When they have literally no risk of dying from covid and you as an old person should be protected because you had the vaccine." Not all of our teenagers have immunity from covid. I'm not saying yours should have to get the vaccine, and I completely understand your perspective on why you don't want him to. But I hope you are aware that many of our teenagers have no immunity, and they and their parents want them to get vaccinated for reasons that have nothing to do with protecting "old" people. It's not an "all teenagers" or "no teenagers" situation.

The comment was in regards to cruising on Disney. The policy as of now is 18 and over. I'm not sure why any vaccinated adult would want the age lowered. To make them feel safer? It really should be up to the parent.

I'm surprised you don't see why. It is for the same exact reason that you are hesitant to give your kid the vaccine. You care about your kids health. You have done your research and you've made a decision for your family to protect them. Your research and viewpoint led you to a conclusion...that the safest thing for your kid is to not take a vaccine at this time.

Other people like me also care about our kids health. We have done our research and made a decision about our families to protect them. Our research and viewpoint led us to a conclusion...that the safest thing for our kids is to vaccinate them if old enough, and limit their exposure to non vaccinated people as much as possible.

That is why I support lowering the age.

My position is no more right or wrong than yours it's just different.

In the end, it will be the decision of DCL on who they allow on the ship. If non vaccinated are allowed, then it will affect the decision some will make about going on their cruises. If only vaccinated are allowed, then it will affect others that may want to go on the cruise.

It will potentially upset a percentage of potential customers either way, so they will do what is the safest and most beneficial for them to be able to resume cruising. Nothing we say here will make a difference one way or another.

The policy right now is for the UK Staycation cruises, and I think the age range may be due to the UK vaccine roll-out. The UK only expects to get to 18+ in June, and I don't believe 12-15 has been approved there yet. I wouldn't be surprised if policy changes once there is broader roll-out and/or with cruises from places where the vaccine is readily available to the under-18s.

UPDATE : Here in Los Angeles (California, USA), the Los Angeles Unified School District is offering the Pfizer vaccine to students 12 and older on their campuses, starting today. It also sounds like they are having mobile vaccination units to go neighborhood to neighborhood, as they wind down the mass vaccination sites.

To avoid seeing their cruise shut down because of an outbreak?
Which is a valid concern! In our school district (which is a large, unified K-12 district), spread among students was pretty much non-existent for young elementary schoolers but clearly happened with teenagers. (Unsurprising to anyone who has teenagers... or has been one LOL!) It doesn't even matter if the adults are all vaccinated, if they pass some threshold of positivity based on older kids/teens alone, that then shuts a cruise down. I do understand that many people do not have firsthand knowledge of these things, but as I mentioned previously - my kids' district went back in person in fall, so I'm well-aware of the spread that can happen among the Edge/Vibe age groups. I guess people sincerely do not believe that spread among those age groups happened.

Spread yes. Serious illness and death extremely rare.

You asked why adults on a cruise would care if under-18yo kids were vaccinated. @mevelandry responded that her reasoning was b/c they don't want the cruise shut down. Spread is exactly what shuts a cruise down. It doesn't matter if teens do or do not get seriously ill. If one gets a little sick, tests positive, and everyone they interacted with during Edge or Vibe activities gets tested and even a small number of other positives are found - you end up with enough spread that a cruise can get shut down (depending on the cruise line's threshold). And at that point, it doesn't matter at all if the positives were under 18 or over: all passengers are affected by the cruise ceasing operations and returning to a home port or the like.

And crew are affected by having to go into quarantine themselves and possibly face the line shutting down again when they have just gotten back to work after over a year of furlough.

In addition to the whole shutting the cruise down perspective...why is it hard for people to believe that some of us don't want our kids to catch Covid...even knowing that serious illness and death are rare.

I know that serious illness and death are rare in kids. I still don't want my kid catching it. It's not the chickenpox, I'm not going to rush my kid over to someones house so they can intentionally catch it and then be immune. (We don't even do that for chickenpox anymore, there's a VACCINE!!!). There are more things to worry with Covid like long haul side effects.

The whole "Your kids (probably) not going to die from it" argument doesn't tell the whole story.

People were ok with it being 18 and over. Now they want it 12 and over then it will be five over and eventually down to 6 months. The only thing that matters is cruising at all costs.

Theres are quite a few vaccinated posters over on cruise critic that won’t vaccinate their kids. So will see how this works out for cruise lines that are dependent on children to be profitable. Should Carnival and Disney decide to go that route.

No kids could be a real selling point for some cruise lines.

I thought people were always for all eligible passengers vaccinated and that the eligible age just keeps going down. That is why the age will be changing based on date for some of the Alaska cruise lines.

THIS!

It's never been about a specific age. Its been about all people that are old enough to get vaccinated.

I half agree/disagree with you. I personally would prefer them to keep lowering the age as it is approved. That said, once the vaccine is approved for 5+, I can see then deciding that the number of kids under 5 isn't worth changing the rules.

No kids could be a real selling point for some cruise lines.

And I'm sure SOME cruise line somewhere will go that route. It wont be Disney.

Here, kids have been in school on and off depending on where they live and the situation in each region but classes shut down all the time because of COVID outbreaks.
