The Unofficial Golf at Disney FAQ Thread

Ok, I'm trying to figure this out...

I want to play in December with my father-in-law. I'm staying at SSR, he's staying off-site. I assume that means I pay the resort guest rate, and he pays the day guest rate, correct?

But if I buy the DVC golf membership for $50, we can both use that discount, right?

One other question: I'm sure I heard somewhere that resort guests get free club rental, but only if paying full rate. So if I'm using the DVC discount, I have to pay for rentals, right? Does the DVC membership give a discount on the club rental, too?

I'm thinking the DVC membership is not worth it if I'm not bringing my own clubs, unless I'm going to play multiple rounds a day.

Unless this is something new, everyone has to pay to rent clubs. I believe years ago the DVC membership included the rental, but not any longer. But you're right, unless you're playing more than one round, the membership doesn't really make sense. Personally, I would just make the tee time under your name and list where you're staying, and I'll be that he gets the resort guest rate.

Could you guys give me advice about taking my son to a driving range at WDW?

He's 8 and just finished his first summer of golf lessons. He has his own clubs, but it would be easier if they had child size clubs there. We would love to take him to a driving range to practice and have fun. Where do you suggest? LBV? Also, how much would it cost? Do you need to make a reservation?

Thanks!

As far as going to the driving range, really any of the courses will do just fine. Club rental for jr. golfers has usually been complimentary, but thats if playing an actual round. I'm not sure if there will be a charge simply to go to the range. Either way, no reservations needed, and a bucket of balls will set you back about $5.

Resort Guests Get Complimentary Golf Club Rental

Guests staying at Walt Disney World Resort hotels can swing into action with a complimentary club rental when they purchase a non-discounted round of golf at Disney's Palm, Magnolia, Lake Buena Vista or Osprey Ridge Golf Courses. Offer includes:
  • Choice of Titleist® and Cobra® clubs
  • Range balls
  • Transportation to and from your Walt Disney World Resort hotel*
To take advantage of this special offer and obtain available tee times please book online or call (407) WDW-GOLF (939-4653)†.

Offer valid from May 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010. Clubs are subject to availability. Guests must present a valid Resort I.D. at check-in to the Disney Golf course to receive this benefit. Offer not valid with any other discount or offer.

*This transportation offer is not available to Guests staying at the Walt Disney World Swan and Walt Disney World Dolphin Resorts.

I guess it's a limited time offer. I first saw it on the 2010 Vacation Planning DVD. But as it says, this is only if you are paying full rate for the round - can't combine with any other discount.

Good find. This probably explains why they no longer list club rental prices on the website. I'm wondering though if the Resort Guest rate is even considered a discounted rate. In my mind, its not, and they're referring more to price slice, cast member, AP discount, etc. I'd probably give the golf line a call and find out. Either way, I still don't think the DVC membership will be of benefit unless playing more than a couple rounds...

I have playe dmore than a dozen rounds at Disnet... Osprey ridge is my favorite folowed by LBV, Magnolia is over reated IMHO.
Play has always moved very well..
The staffs were always more than helpful even took me back to my resort in their own car!

Any Novmeber travelers Military or retired Military? I am trying to find out if the Childrens Miracle Network allows military and retirees in for free like they do at all other PGA events..... anyone had previous experience with this?

I can't answer your question. However, an e-mail yesterday from Disney said that resort guests can get into the tournament (11-14) for free. So if you are staying on property (and I would think Shades of Green would be considered staying on property) you would be able to get in for free.

We're leaving POFQ the day free dining begins. I'm hoping that maybe dh (the golf fan) will want to go watch some golf on the 11th. Has to be so much better to be there than to watch it on TV.

Haha that's right! You haven't watched golf until you've been to a game!

If I am going to watch husband..and just ride in the cart with him...does it cost anything. Some places around here charge for you to ride.

Yes, it costs. I ride in the cart with DH at least once or twice a trip (he golfs every morning). If I remember, it's either $10 or $15, but one time either at Palm or Magnolia, I forget which, they were nice enough to say they wouldn't charge us that day.

Yep 15.00, checked many times, ive been trying to get my DS to ride along for years :lmao:. But i would so rather play it then watch it.

I could really use some advice. I am surprising my husband with a tee time on Magnolia. I didn't want to bring his clubs with us because they are too large to hide in the car and I really want to keep it a surprise until we arrive. I am planning on renting clubs but then I got to thinking about the other things that he would need. What else would he need that would not be provided? I am not a golfer so I have no clue. Also, are the rental clubs nice or would you prefer to use your own? Any and all advice is appreceated!
Thanks!

Your DH will LOVE it! I don't think there's anything he needs that he can't get at the pro shop. And the clubs are very good. Years ago, before DH started bringing his own clubs, he was so impressed with the clubs he rented there that he went out and bought a pair like them. Last I heard, they were renting clubs of two different qualities, but even the "lesser" clubs were very good. And tell him not to miss the 6th hole (I think that's the one)_

Thanks for the reply. I think that my husband will enjoy trying out a different set. Now, if I can just keep my mouth shut for a few more days! :rotfl:

Dining options at the course would be a great piece of information to add to the first post.

Advice needed.....

Dbf has booked a tee time for oak trail since it is included with out ticket, however.....I have a plan. DBF is not a Disney lover per se. I am. I figure if I can get him to play at a course that he really enjoys, it may make it easier to get him to return more often. Of all the courses, which is the best? The one course that makes you want to go back and play it again. DBF is a good golfer, not pro level by any means but good. Advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard golf balls are expensive at the club houses, so you might want to stash a handful for him. Not sure about shoes at the clubhouse, can you sneak in his shoes? And maybe his glove.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add some info. Osprey Ridge is really the only one that has a restaurant actually at the course.

If he's a good golfer, then I would suggest Osprey Ridge. It is definitely the most challenging and picturesque of the 4 courses. Many will say to tell him Magnolia and Palm because this is where the pro's play in November, and while yes that has some appeal to it, in my opinion those courses are a little boring. Certainly can't go wrong with one of them, I just think Osprey is a notch up.

I agree, getting his shoes is probably the most important part. If trying to sneak balls and a glove will give away the surprise, then it may be worth the $20 it will cost for him to stock up on those before his round.
