The Unofficial FLORIDA DVCers Thread!

Bump:thumbsup2 Did I mention they serve beer at Rose and Crown?:lmao:

Hello I live in Miami just off the Florida Turnpike in Kendall/Hammocks.....We are about 4 hours away and are headed to the world on Sunday for Spring Break...

Just found this thread. Oh, how cool to know there are quite a few of us FL DVC folks here on the DIS:cool1: Now I can tell my DB that we are not nuts for buying into DVC when we live right here in FL:rotfl:

We are 3 hours away in Davie. DH and I go up for all of the parties, MNSSHP, P&PP, MVMCP. We usually stay in our DVC from Sun-Thu. When we do decide to do a Fri/Sat included we will usually stay on property at one of the non DVC resorts and then switch over on Sunday (gotta maximize point usage).

Hey deej696, if you're down on the 22 we might be able to meet up. Any others in the neighborhood then?

Love being able to hop in our car and head to WDW on a whim. We head to the parks almost every Saturday and stay on points 5-6 times a year. We're leaving on Sunday for AKV for our 12th anniversary!
Did anyone read the Sentinel this morning? Mansions are planned to be built on the WDW canals. WOW.

It seems coming up with a date for a Florida DVCer’s meet is the challenge. Monday through Thursday evenings are out for me unless it’s mid July through mid August. With that said a Friday night or Saturday night is totally doable as long as we get a baby sitter. I love the Rosa and Crown, the Bass ale is great there!:drinking1

Well if you are down, we will definitely be there that night. We are flexible on location, as we dont really have a plan for that night. I posted it on the DIS meet board too... I had suggested Rose and Crown, but we can do anywhere really....

I am sure we will be down sometime in July to make that happen. We have a cruise planned for late may early June so we may be skipping that month. We tend to avoid Fri/Sat for cheaper points, but I'm sure we will work something out for July. Although we do find ourselves down there on the weekend at times on cash so who knows. On a side note, looks like our Gators finally decided to show up in the N.I.T. I went to the Final Four last year, but somehow I cant get motivated for the Not Important Tournament:rotfl:

July would work for me. Afterall, I live about 40 from Disney.
Deej696 are you going to the orange and blue game?

Is there a link to the dis meet board? I can't seem to find it. My brain is taking the day off.:upsidedow

Normally I would, but my brother is getting married that day, and I'm the best man:thumbsup2 I tried to tell him that not only is it the Orange and Blue game, but thats the weekend of the Masters. One would think he could plan better:lmao:

My DW, and three DC (4, 3, and 1) are considering a permanent move to Davenport, Fl from Maryland. There seems to be an outrageous number of short term rental homes for sale that can be permanent residences and prices are going down almost on a daily basis.

She is an RN and has already been offered a nursing position with Florida Hospital in Orlando. I have a business that I am currently in the process of selling and that would allow me the chance to stay home with the kids until they are all school age.

Our biggest concern is losing the "disney magic" that we work hard and save up to be able to experience three or four times a year (buy DVC points). I say living 15 minutes from WDW would be amazing and I would always have something to do with the little ones as they grow (progressing from Flying Dumbo to the 100 foot drop at Blizzard Beach). Spring training baseball .. ESPN the Weekend would be great experiences to share with my 1 year old son as he grows up.

What kind of experience have "locals" had in trying to take advantage of the Disney Magic my wife and I love so much, when it is so close all the time? Would it become less special knowing we don't have to work so hard to get there to enjoy, the three or four times a year we go now?

If you are able to, share the number of points you own and the ways you use them to maximize your time on property. We would be able to start out in one bedroom dvc rooms, then maybe having to move into two bedroom dvc rooms as the children grow.

Does anyone have children that have outgrown the disney magic and not want to go with their parents anymore?

Im sorry for being long winded. This is a great thread for me to get some feedback on living in Florida full time that will help us make the right decision.

Thanks!

I think the great thing about being local, is that your trips to Disney are much more relaxed. Wanna hop into DHS and ONLY ride RnR? Go ahead. Craving a fish and chips for dinner? Then head to Rose and Crown. Need a good laugh at the end of the week? Pop into the comedy club at PI. The flexibility of being local is great, but yet at least for us, the magic never goes away. We might make some day trips, but for the most part we use our DVC about once a month, and we really look forward to those getaways. I think it just allows you to do what you want to do, and then when you have had enough you can go home, rather than trying to squeeze everyones favorites all into a week. To me thats stressful, and when I go to Disney, or any vacation for that matter, the last thing I want is stress:thumbsup2

So back to the previous topic, April 22nd....Who all is there. Bridger is down, who else!?????

To add to deej696, I had my wife and kids at MGM "Hollywood" studios today for just a few hours. We never go all day. We like going in the mornings while it's still cool and get a few rides in etc. Now that we have joined DVC we love it even more and can't wait for our next stay. For us it's about a 40 minute drive but when we stay at one of the resorts it still feels like we have gotten away for a bit. A nice de-stressor that didn't require major travel.

We are about ten minutes from MCO with two easy routes to WDW (417 or 528/4). Bought DVC when we lived in PA. After our move to FL we were unsure what we would do about DVC. When AKV opened up we added a contract there.

May add some more when GC sales open up. We are at MVCI Shadow Ridge this week with next weekend at GC DL. Looking forward to not having to pay those nightly rates for their smallish rooms EOY anymore.

But back to WDW, the nice thing about being so close is we get to enjoy more of the concerts at Epcot and multiple CP in December. Day trips are great fun.

I know this is an older thread, but I just found it. :)

We're still fairly new-ish to DVC having just purchased in July 2008, but it fit in with our lifestyle (i.e., multiple short on-property stays per year already) and we had already stayed as cash-paying guests at SSR and VB prior to buying.

However, we've already booked a total of four trips with our "developer"/incentive points and are just waiting for our use year (December) to open up to officially book the other four we have planned.

We're looking forward to an upcoming trip with the extended family for a long weekend at SSR while also hitting AK for one day.

We are already loving DVC!! :)

I
We are already loving DVC!! :)

Welcome, and just so you know, I love it more each and every vacation and wish I could have bought more points! There's never enough!

Like you, we do shorter stays more frequently! There' nothing like staying on sight (IMO). pixiedust:

Next stay-AKV Oct 16-Oct 19 :yay:

Thanks for reviving this thread! I had almost forgot about it! Welcome, and glad to hear you're loving your DVC as much as the rest of us. We are going down for our annual F&W/My birthday trip in November and I cant wait to escape!:lmao:

I live in Sarasota (95 minutes door-to-mouse) and love being able to pop over for a day or two and just enjoy the resorts, or do a little bit of the parks or meet friends and family there or whatever. The rest of the my family comes down for real vacations three times a year or so, but I go about once a month for a 1-3 night stay. I love DVC!
