The Ultimate Stomach Bug @ Disney Thread

I hate to say this, but this horrible virus has been going around all over the east coast. (Not sure about everywhere else.) You cannot avoid it in my opinion. Believe me, we tried. The good news is it seems to be a 24 hour virus. The bad news is, it's very violent. I too thought food poisioning, then when I had heard the widespread outbreak, I knew I was wrong. I would never wish this thing on my worst enemy. At a place like Disney, you can sanitize all you want, the truth is, when you got to a park and get on a ride, your coming in contact with anything and everything. Try not to worry, it seems to be hit or miss. Good luck!

I am just getting over the New Jersey Stomach Bug
I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, missed 2 days of work
Dh and I had gotten it one time while at The World
The only good thing I can say is, at least it usually just lasts around 24 hrs

Me too...I got it Monday night, then my 4 yo, and my 23 mo old...I missed 2 days of work, the kids missed 4 days of 'school'...I am still woozy...

Salmonella isn't contagious from person to person.

Actually this is not true:
Thorough cooking kills Salmonella. Food may also become contaminated by the hands of an infected food handler who did not wash hands with soap after using the bathroom.

and about the Salmonella outbreak:
"Those are only the cases that are severe enough to have a person go to a doctor. It's been estimated that the actual number of total salmonella cases could be 30 times or more as great," he said.

Mody said there probably have been many unreported cases in the current outbreak. "If someone has mild symptoms, they might not seek health care," he said.

I have heard that Peanut Butter could be one of the recent causes again. But if someone got it and is a food preparer that does not wash well, it could spread like crazy.

That said, the stomach virus always runs rampant this time of year.

It's going around here in NW OH. Plus some upper respitory virus. My drugstore pharm has been nuts according to the techs when I stopped Monday on my usual monthly visit for DS meds.

My kids have been okay, sister had an ear infection right before New Year's.

Does anyone know if you get this once if you can get it again?

Our county here in Illinois has had a Norovirus outbreak and we just recovered from it...I really don't want to have it again when we vacation next month!!

I just got back Jan 6th and my girlfriend got sick at newark airport before we left but we think it was food poisoning but then once in disney i believe my brother got this stomach virus and was in bed for about a day and a half...two days later my mom starting to feel bad but never actually got sick and she was still able to do the parks and stuff..my dad and me never got sick, it was very strange and i was almost certain i was going to get it.

I am finally starting to feel better today, it kicked my butt
Yesterday I felt like I was run over by a truck
Hope you and your family are feeling better
My kids had it first, then me, my poor DH is really trying not to get it
He drives for a living and not having access to a bathroom right away is
not a good thing

We were in Disney from Jan 3-8. I was most worried about my almost 2 year old son. We took hand sanitizing gel and wipes. None of us have gotten sick yet. We also didn't see any of the sickness first hand. We are also East Coast dwellers. I hope we can avoid all viruses this winter.

I'm from south Jersey too. We were all sick the week after Christmas and I am telling you, it was so violent. I felt the same as you, like I got hit by a truck and it took me 3 days to recover. Glad you're feeling better!

I was just reading up on norovirus, and unfortunately, word is that recovering from norovirus does not impart immunity.
From the CDC:
Immunity to Norovirus

Mechanisms of immunity to norovirus are unclear. It appears that immunity may be strain-specific and lasts only a few months; therefore, given the genetic variability of noroviruses, individuals are likely to be repeatedly infected throughout their lifetimes. This may explain the high attack rates in all ages reported in outbreaks. Recent evidence also suggests that susceptibility to infection may be genetically determined, with people of blood group O being at greatest risk for severe infection.

Just so you know you're not alone...

Oh, and more good news:
Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. Alcohol-based hand gels are thought not to be effective against norovirus, although if used after soap-and-water washing, they might help.

Get some immune system boosters in you. Vitamin C, sambuccol (or any brand of elderberry, this stuff is awesome)

Just got back from Disney last night. My husband came down with a stomach bug on Wednesday that started with a fever and chills, then the next day diarrhea. We shared a drink 1/2 hour before he started with symptoms and I took elderberry tablets twice a day and so far knock on wood I have not gotten the bug, and it is 4 days later since we shared the drink. I think that either those elderberry tabs really did work or he may have has food poisoning. Did anyone else that had the stomach bug get a fever and chills??? Also, we were a party of 9 travelling together and he was the only one who got sick.

I doubt it was food poisioning. We are in Disney now and I got sick 3 days after arrival and my son got sick within hours of me. He had a fever but no runns. I had the runs but no fever. We were both vomiting consistantly for at least 12 hours. My hubby who had wanted to get "romantic" only hours before I got ill did not get sick at all and that was definatly spreading more germs than sharing a drink....LOL My daughter also did not get sick and we all were sharing drinks ect with each other so I think it really depends on your immunities too... Fortunately DS & I were only confined to our room for a day and then were better to get out and enjoy Disney again.

This is a little OT but sort of on topic as well.

Today while we were all out to eat, I was waiting in line to use the restroom and there was this mother and young daughter washing their hands. I had noticed the mom get the paper towels ready before they started washing so they wouldn't have to touch the handle after they'd gotten their hands cleaned, when this older lady walked up after washing HER hands and snagged their paper towels. :rotfl2: The little girl turns to her mother and says "Well NOW what do we do!?!" I thought I was going to die! On one hand it was extremely rude of the old woman to just assume the towels were there for her use, when there was another dispenser on her end she could have easily used, but at the same time, I could not help but laugh at the little girls reaction.

I just had to share.

OMG that is hilarious!!!:rotfl:

We just got back lastnight from WDW, we were there for 7 days and none of us got sick...there were 9 of us all together. We had a wonderful time!!

Was at WDW from 1/1 to 1/3 before going on the Magic. There were 11 of us. No one got sick. We were careful about handwashing, especially before eating.Had a great time

Watch out for the buffet serving handles. I've heard horror stories about those... I guess grab 'em with a napkin...

I'm afraid it's coming over from the UK, I got it 4 times last year, its rife over here just before Christmas, sorry everyone!

I wouldn't doubt that there are some instances of salmonella being written off as norovirus, and vice versa. But since the norovirus is so much more prevalent and much more contagious, I'd be willing to bet that the predominance of cases of GI distress are that rather than tainted peanut butter.
