They never released figures to us, but based on
YouTube videos that we were able to find and various rumors -- we figure there were about 100 entries per each of the five categories. They narrowed this down to 20 finalists each and then the public voted for a month. At which point the five top scorers in each category were proclaimed winners.
Fortunately, the voting only counted for 16% of the score and the rest was the judges score. I don't think Disney totally trusted the public to pick the "right" candidates. They're being more trusting this year.
One other comment... I thought that this year's contestants would miss out on all the friendships we made last year, since there would be only three finalists and one winner. I was wrong -- thanks mostly due to the wonderful community of DISers.
