The Time of our Lives! My first Half Marathon! Update 6/6 COMPLETE!

I'm joining in. Really interested in running the half marathon next year. Have started the Couch to 5K program as I have NEVER run before.

Too funny about that receipt, at first glance I thought they had charged you that much.:scared1:

I'm jumping in to this trip report! I just did the Princess Half (my first) last month. The expo was similar, except the registration and the stage were in the same room as the vendors. It was crowded! I also flew Southwest out of NOLA.

I'm looking forward to your installments from the half! Was the half on Saturday and the full on Sunday, or did I get it backwards?

The half was plenty enough for me. I can't imagine doing a full or a GOOFY! :faint:

Wow..........the Expo floor looked insane! :scared1:

That's so cool that they sent you a new shirt.........gotta love DISNEY!

One of my friends ran the Goofy this year..........I loved hearing about his experience and I can't wait to hear more about yours.......it had to be AMAZING to run at WDW! :thumbsup2

It WAS insane! I was way too overwhelmed not knowing what to expect! I plan to spend longer time in there next time! :0) Thanks so much! It really was one of the most amazing experiences of my life!!!

Hey Karen,
I'm a Louisiana girl also, 60 miles west of N.O. Looking forward to reading more about your trip and especially about the marathon, something I'd really like to do someday. (Is that the All American sandwich in the picture from Earl of Sandwich? my favorite!)

How neat! I'm from SWLA! :0) YES that is an All American sandwich! That's my favorite, too! Yummm!!!! You should do marathon weekend at least once just to say you did! It's so much fun!!!

Awesome update Karen!!! I love Pop, that is where I always usually stay. I am going down for a quick weekend trip though in June, to meet the new Toy Story 3 characters and decided to stay at the All Star Movies since they actually have a Toy Story area there. The marathon looks like a crazy time to be there but fun. What an extra special magical touch that there were still Christmas decorations up. :santa:Thank you for making my night with this update, as always great :thumbsup2 Can't wait to read and see more.

Thanks girl! Pop is a really neat resort!!! I've stayed in the Toy Story area at ASM and it is SO CUTE!!!! I loved it!!! We stayed there in 2003!

Marathon weekend is insane but FUN! Can't wait till next year!! :0)

I'm jumping in! I am training to do the half next Jan., so I can't wait to see how it went for you! :goodvibes

YAY! Good for you! It's SO much fun you are going to have a blast! I trained for about a year before I ran it and I felt very prepared!!! The Half (even though I was a frozen ice cube) was one of the most incredible experiences of my life! Good luck with everything! Let me know if you have any questions!

Umm sir, you still owe me $3000 for my change :rotfl:

:rotfl2::rotfl2: No kidding, right?! :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Hey!! The baby is great, his name is Crewe and he is awesome so adorable and so much fun!!! I;m so in love!!!:lovestruc

Sooo we have a trip planned to Orlando for the 16-27 of April staying offsite so I could have a full kitchen and in room laundry, but I had really wanted to go on a cruise again. A great fare popped up for a 3 night cruise April 22-25 so I booked it this past Wednesday!!!:rotfl: We're going on the WONDER!!! YAY!!! Any plans for you? Your anniversary is next week:goodvibes

Hope all is well!! :flower3:

Aww YAY! I'm so excited for y'all!!! How exciting about the cruise! Y'all are going to have a blast!! We didn't do anything (trip wise) for our anniversary this year....we saved it for late Sept...we are also going on the Wonder on a 4 night cruise then we are staying 3 nights at the Poly after! Can't wait!!! Glad to hear everyone is doing well! Have FUN on y'alls cruise!

GREAT!!! How exciting!!! I love it when people join the world of running! You can so do the Half next year....it's an awesome experience! Let me know if you have any questions! I'm surprised that the races haven't filled up yet....last year at this point, the half was almost closed for registration! (They aren't even at 50% yet!)

I'm jumping in to this trip report! I just did the Princess Half (my first) last month. The expo was similar, except the registration and the stage were in the same room as the vendors. It was crowded! I also flew Southwest out of NOLA.

Congratulations!!!! How exciting! I would love to run the princess one day! Looks like SO much fun!!! You are right...the half is on Saturday and the full is on Sunday! LOL I know what you mean but I think I'm crazy enough to do the FULL in January! I want to do just one full just to say I did it! I want that Mickey medal! LOL I'm not going to push myself either...I'm going to take it slow and see how I do! :0)

Thanks again everyone! Another update on the way!!!

We woke up extra early to make it to HS before park opening. I had never seen park opening here before and I heard it was cute so we were excited to see it.

trip1.jpg

I was shocked that the parks still had Christmas decorations up, also!

We could not see the little skit for park opening going on AT ALL! We could hear it, we just couldn't see it. Oh well. We made our plan to book it to TSM instead! lol

trip2.jpg

trip3.jpg

We didn't wait long at all! Maybe 10 minutes! We also got FP's after the ride so we could ride again later! lol

trip4.jpg

I wanted Kim to first see how all of this came together. That's another reason we chose HS to come to first. I wanted her to see my favorite HS exhibit: One Man's Dream!

trip5.jpg

trip6.jpg

Obligational MMC Karen picture! :rotfl2:

She loved it...she said it was one of her favorites, too and she was excited to see how it all came together!

As we were walking out of the show, I saw the little store next to the exit had a few "Walt Disney" items. I almost SCREAMED when I saw the purse! I have been looking for it EVERYWHERE and couldn't find it. I even had a bidding war on ebay for it but I lost! LOL It's a black and white purse with Walt and Mickey on Main Street in front of the Castle. Mickey is in color. It's so cool I love it!!!

trip7.jpg

As we were walking out, we saw this and Kim is OBSESSED with HSM! I love it too but not quite as much as Kim! LOL So we had to stop and watch!

trip8.jpg

trip9.jpg

We took a ride on the GMR and we were told to sit in a certain row. Well, neither Kim or I are very big and he kind of put us in a half of a row where two people were already sitting. I guess on the "real" rows, they fit about six people a piece....this one could have fit four. And that's how many they were trying to fit. Well, this woman was sitting all sideways in the corner stretched out and we walked up to sit and she got all mad at us saying "this is NOT meant to be a four person row! There's no way!" She made me feel all stupid so I looked around and all the other rows were packed. I knew this was the row he told us so I said the number to her and she looked at me like yeah right sister, I ain't movin! YES there IS a way for us to fit! If you sit normal, then we could fit. I turned around to the CM like "HELP" and he said, "are you sure you can't fit four people on this row?" She looked at him all exasperated and finally moved. We really had plenty of room I mean, our butts aren't that big!!! LOL After we sat down, I said a little rude THANK YOU to her...guess I shouldn't have but I was ticked. OH well.

trip10.jpg

After that horrendous episode, we realized it was time for Beauty and the Beast. This is the only other thing I really wanted Kim to see here....I knew it was a "must do". With our schedule the way it was, we had to fit both HS AND AK in the same day and both closed at 5 p.m.! YIKES!

trip11.jpg

trip12.jpg

trip13.jpg

She LOVED Beauty and the Beast!

After the show, we got in line for RnRC! She was really nervous! LOL

trip14.jpg

This cracked me up....it's in the que line for the ride. I think we waited about 30 minutes but we had till 12:30 p.m. here so we were good!

trip15.jpg

Haha!

trip18.jpg

I wanted a semi-healthy pre-race food so we found a place over by Indiana Jones...can't remember the name....that had Turkey Panini's! I didn't eat much of the fries.

trip19.jpg

We took one last picture, then it was off to AK, we go!!!!

.................CONT..................

.............CONT...................

By the time we got to AK, it was raining....we had to pull out the panchos! Ugh..

trip20.jpg

The tree!

trip21.jpg

Before we even got through the ticket line, we saw these guys all lined up to greet us! So we stopped and took pictures! LOL

trip22.jpg

trip23.jpg

I told Brer Rabbit that I hadn't seen him around before and he clapped and jumped up and down! LOL

trip25.jpg

Then we turned the corner, and there was DAISY! YAY!

trip26.jpg

trip27.jpg

You could see how nasty it was outside! My pants were wet halfway up the leg! I HATE THAT!

trip28.jpg

I knew if we left though, Kim wouldn't get to see AK!

trip29.jpg

First stop: Bugs life! Our seats were broken so she didn't get to feel the stingers of the bugs! LOL

trip31.jpg

See what I mean about my pants?! Ugh! LOL

trip30.jpg

I talked Kim into going onto EE. I told her if she could handle RnRC, she'd be fine on Everest!

She wasn't too happy with me... LOL

trip32.jpg

She was FREAKING out when we were going up and I kept telling her "Look there's HS" or "Look there's a hotel" She was like NO NO NO I'm looking straight!

trip33.jpg

We stopped on Dinosaur after EE.

trip34.jpg

This was a little bit calmer for her so she was fine!

trip35.jpg

trip36.jpg

By this point, it had stopped raining but everything was wet. We figured it might be a good time to ride KS because the animals would be out in the cold...

trip37.jpg

This is the FIRST TIME I've EVER seen this lion up and walking around! They are always laying on the rock everytime we pass! He was definitely pacing back and forth and back and forth! lol

Last stop for the day: Festival of the Lion King!

trip38.jpg

Kim said this was her 2nd favorite to Beauty and the Beast!

trip39.jpg

trip40.jpg

I found Minnie's tree on the way out!

trip41.jpg

trip42.jpg

We were cold and getting hungry so we made our way back to POP. We had planned to use 2 CS's today because whe had the castle tomorrow which would take up 2 TS's.

We went to our room first to put on dry jeans! lol

trip43.jpg

The line for the pasta was MASSIVE. But I waited it out and got some anyway. I didnt' eat much of the chicken cause I didn't know how it would affect my stomach!

trip44.jpg

We got tie dye cheesecake which I also didn't eat much of. I am always nervous eating somthing the day before a race that I haven't eaten before cause I don't know how it will affect me. My stomach is already a ball of nerves so I get a little worried!

trip45.jpg

Forecast for the race! BRRRRRRRRR!!!

We went back to our room and I took a hot shower to warm and and we were in bed by 9 p.m.!! I texted Heather and Laura for something but I dont' remember what...lol...I just remember that Heather and her family were all at WCC about to leave! I know she wanted to be in bed early, too! I planned to meet Laura at the "B" tent bright and early at 4 a.m.! YIKES!

Anyway, coming up.....THE RACE! My very first Half Marathon!!! Yay!

Another awesome update Karen, love the fact that you hit TSM first at the Studios, that is my favorite!!! I am so very excited for the release of Toy Story 3 and can't wait for June. Also awesome find on your purse, isn't it neat how things work out like that, amazing, so happy for you that you were able to find it.:thumbsup2 Awesome find on Brer Rabbit, I had heard he had been out at AK, however when I was there in Dec. I kept looking for him and didn't see him, might have to check again come June if I have a chance to head over to AK. The tye dye cheesecake looks so yummy, as many times as I have stayed at Pop, I have never tried it but I love how very colorful it is. That is awesome that you have stayed at All Star Movies, I am excited and really hope that I am able to get the Toy Story section since that is the whole point of my quick trip. Well girl, as always you've made my day, can't wait to read and see more, race day, Yeah!!!:cool1::goodvibes:hug:[/I]

Love the update Karen - so excited to hear about your race. Sounds like your friend had a great trip (sorry about that rain - always a bummer), you were certainly a great tour guide:goodvibes

Thanks so much! I'm excited about TS3, too! I always loved the TS movies! I was excited to see Brer Rabbit, too....I've only seen him in parades! lol When we stayed at ASM, my mom would always have to walk through the "door" when leaving (The big door at the Toy Story section) ... she said she felt funny if she walked around it! :rotfl2: The TS section is SO cute! You are going to LOVE it!!!

Thanks girl! Yeah she had a blast!!! :0)

Saturday, January 9, 2010-RACE DAY!!!!!

(Sorry these pictures aren't as clear as my other ones...I was running with my little handheld Kodak, not my monstrous Nikon! lol)

I had a hard time falling asleep Friday night, the night before the Half. I was nervous, worried, scared...I really wasn't sure what to expect! At 3 a.m., my cell phone alarm went off! It was time! I could also hear wake up calls coming from the rooms around us! It was really funny!! Maybe I'm not the only crazy fool waking up to run in the freezing rain!

Here's an article on what we had to endure for the Half....http://www.disunplugged.com/2010/01/11/temperature-low-but-spirits-high-for-2010-disney-marathon/

I got up, put on a sweatshirt, and went to the food court for some hot water. I wanted to drink my tea! :0) After getting my fill on green tea, I went back to the room and changed into my running gear.

race1.jpg

race1-2.jpg

Never have I run in weather like this! It was insane! I bought a $5 sweatshirt from WalMart at the last minute before we left and I'm SO glad I did! I definitely needed it!!!

After getting dressed, I walked to the bus stop, then realized I forgot my hot hands and my bottle of water so I went back to my room, then went back to the bus stop! lol There were SO many people that we were filling up all the charter busses so they had to call out a few Disney Transportation busses! That's what I ended up riding on. I did end up forgetting my Garmin which was plugged into the wall charging but oh well! I was frustrated but I didn't realize it until the bus was halfway there. I was supposed to meet up with Laura so I wanted to be sure she didn't think I forgot about her! LOL

race2.jpg

I got to the race and not only was Laura there, but so was Holly, a few Disney Brides friends! We talked for a while then lined up to walk to the start line. Our walk took forever...it was like a half a mile walk! Crazy!

race3.jpg

These guys were everywhere telling people what to do! Haha!

race4.jpg

By this point, it was sleeting. Yes, sleeting. I live in Louisiana. I don't run in the cold, especially not the freezing cold. This was a bit much for me!

race5.jpg

These were a bunch of guys who couldn't wait for the portapotties while walking to our corrals! HAha

With this being my first Half, I got stuck in Corral G! Ugh. The Corrals went from A-G. Of course I was in the last one! Oh well. At least I had a running buddy, Laura! We made an awesome team!!! She actually went back a Corral so she could run with me! I had no time to prove when we turned in times way back in April so I got stuck in the last corral.

race6.jpg

Finally 40 minutes after the first runners started, it was our turn! YAY!

race7.jpg

It took us a little while to reach the Start line.

race8.jpg

These guys were cheering us on!!

race9.jpg

Along the route were bands, cheerleaders, choirs, etc. there to keep us going! It was awesome!

race10.jpg

No this was not our real time...we started way behind the real time!! About mile 3, my heart decided to be stupid and jump into this abnormal tachycardic rhythm that it does sometimes. I tried to walk it out and hold my breath but it wouldn't stop. I was SO MAD that it decided to do that so early into the half. UGH. Laura bend down to tie her shoe and I did the same and I finally got it to stop. It usually only happens if I'm overheated so I don't understand what happened there....

race11.jpg

Anyway, we continued running and finally we saw the Magic Kingdom sign...couldn't wait to run around the Castle!

race12.jpg

Mile 4 - This is about the time the falling ice was pelting us hard in the face. That mess hurt!

race13.jpg

Mile 5...almost halfway!

race14.jpg

We ran through the back parkling lot into the Magic Kingdom!

race15.jpg

I couldn't believe every park still had their Christmas decorations up! I was really glad cause it made the whole thing just a little bit more magical!

race16.jpg

Running down Main Street...no feeling like it in the world! There were people out there who braved the cold to come cheer us on. It was amazing running down Main Street having people cheer for you...gives me chills just to think about it!!

race17.jpg

I stopped for a picture in front of the Castle!

race18.jpg

We looped in through Tomorrowland, then curved over to Fantasyland...

race19.jpg

Where we saw Alice and the Queen of Hearts!

race20.jpg

Mile 6 was in the Magic Kingdom

race21.jpg

We also saw Princess Tiana and her friends in Liberty Square...

race22.jpg

And these guys played a tune for us!

race23.jpg

At mile 7, we stopped to refuel (with GU gels). I really waited too long to do that but I didn't want to stop while in the middle of the Magic Kingdom. Now I know better what to do for next time! I should have taken one around mile 4, I was just too caught up in the excitement of it all! lol

......................CONT................

...............CONT..................

race24.jpg

We finished off our refuel while waiting in line for a picture with Mary Poppins, Bert, and the Penguins!

race25.jpg

Mile 8....the rest of the stretch was so boring! Nothing to see or do!!

race26.jpg

See what I mean...just mile marker signs along the way! I will say that I always refuel with GU ... either the gels or the shot blocks. At mile 8.7, we were given Clif Shots...wow...that was the nastiest thing I've EVER put in my mouth! The GU gels are kind of a lighter consistency. The Clif Shot tasted like pure paste in my mouth! It was so disgusting. I threw the rest down on the ground! Ugh...

race27.jpg

Mile 10...this is the point that I started to get miserable! Besides the cold and the freezing rain (which by this point had turned from ice pellets to RAIN), I was hurting bad. However, Laura and I kept it up and kept on going! We worked together really well!

race28.jpg

Mile 11...almost there! The only time we really walked was at 11.5 miles. We walked until we saw the 12 mile sign, then we ran it on in home!

race29.jpg

I was NEVER so excited to see this EPCOT ball! I kept praying for a sign or anything that even SAID EPCOT on it!!! lol YAY I wanted to kiss the ground when I saw this! Hah!

race30.jpg

Finally to Mile 12...

race31.jpg

...and it was a MISERABLE mile 12...see? lol We started running after that and ran all the way to the finish! I guess I got a burst of energy or something! Haha!

race32.jpg

Getting closer!

race33.jpg

We were almost there!

race34.jpg

A gospel choir singing us in home!! Haha

race35.jpg

Mile 13...YAY!

race36.jpg

The Finish Line! As I was crossing the finish line, I started to cry. I was crying not only because I was miserable and cold and hurting, but because this dream of mine, a dream that I have pursued for an entire year has finally come true! If you can DREAM IT, you can DO IT!!!!

I had decided at the beginning of the race that I could either be miserable the entire time and not enjoy myself...OR...I could suck it up and deal with it because EVERYONE was miserable (I couldn't change that) and ENJOY myself! I had been training for this race for an ENTIRE year! I wasn't about to let the cold get me down!! Woohooo!! lol

race37.jpg

Lots of Donald Medals!

race38.jpg

Unused Portapotties! lol

race39.jpg

We found Chip and Dale after the race!

race40.jpg

and we found Daisy too!

race41.jpg

Me and Laura, my awesome running buddy!

race42.jpg

Yay I did it! Can't believe I ran a half marathon! What an amazing, exhilarating experience! Yes we were cold and miserable the entire race, but we made the best of it, we had a positive attitude, and we finished the race!

13.1
I DID IT!

Thank you, Disney! I really did have "The time of my LIFE"!!

If you even have an ounce of desire to run a Disney race, let me tell you...DO IT! It's an amazing experience and one of the most memerable moments of my life!!!!!!

Up next: After the race! :0)

Yay Karen!! :woohoo:

Congratulations on finishing!! That must be an amazing feeling to reach your goal like that! :goodvibes

Another awesome and amazing update my friend. Wow, I think that took some amazing strength to run that race, thank God you had the help of a friend. I am not convinced I could have done it with as cold and miserable as it was, if there is one thing I can't stand, it is being cold, not sure I could have done that in those conditions. You did get to meet some pretty cool characters, love The Princess & The Frog gang, how cute. That is cool about the door on the Toy Story building, I will have to be sure and check it out, I am looking forward kind of to staying at a different resort, it is just a super quick trip but will still be nice, have decided not to try and cram a whole lot into the two days and just relax and enjoy being away from the rat race. Can't wait to read and see more of your trip, as always a bright spot in my day. :goodvibes

So amazing, Karen!!! Good for you! :thumbsup2 What a cool experience........can't wait to hear more! :goodvibes

Karen - Awesome Job!!!!:cheer2:
I love that you took so many pictures on the way, and recorded each mile sign! How cool that there are a bunch of characters along the course!
I get some PVCs and tachyarrhythmias periodically too - I have noticed that when I am really tired and/or way off my usual schedule (on a trip in a different time zone) I get more...maybe with getting up so early you threw your system off??? Glad you only had a brief run of it, I have had it when running too and it feels awful!
Can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip:banana:

I really enjoyed your race photos! I remember hearing about how cold the race was, it even LOOKS cold in your photos! It looks like we had the same route for the Princess, but the mile signs and the characters were different.

Your time looks like it was much better than mine. I walked a large portion of my race, though. My goal was just to FINISH!

We had Clif Shots too. I'd never had one before. I thought it was sort of the consistency of pre-made cake frosting, but not quite the same taste, and I had the vague sense that I probably resembled my dog eating peanut butter while trying to get that stuff down without any water!

How did I not know about this tr?? Ok, I'm starting from page 1.

Awe. So happy that Kim got a great experience out of her first flight.

Christmas decorations and Ghirardelli. What more can you ask?

I still dream of seeing the Christmas deco again.

I love one man's dream too. I just realised I only got pics I took. I'm not in any of them hehe

I have a sweater with the pic of Mickey and Walt on Main Street. Also found a pen at the fire station in the MK that has a projection of the image. It's so cool.

I also love HSM. And I think the shows at DHS are really cool.

Kim looks a bit "Blazé" lol
