The Teacher Told the Kids about the sniper!

Talking to kids about what is going on in terms that they can understand is one thing, showing them images on the TV that even ADULTS don't need to see is quite another!

I would have been FURIOUS if my DDs were in a classroom that aired those 9/11 news images over and over. Completely inappropriate for young children.

Sorry, don't mean to disrail the original thread. The k teacher needed to tell the kids something about why they couldn't play outside but she probably didn't choose the right words. A simple statement about it being the "rule" to play inside that day would be sufficient for most kids that age.

Last year on 9/11, DD's school sent home a letter to the parents which included the statement made to the children. I believe the district office came up with the statement & it was the same to all classes in all schools. I forget what it was exactly, but it covered the basics without too much detail. The big thing was that the letter asked the parents to discuss event with their children as they saw fit without overwhelming them. Of course we later had problems with kids who had seen too much on TV "sharing" it all with the kids on the bus. In the classroom, however, teachers answered questions that came up without giving details & the line "Please discuss this with your parents."

Anyway, I guess when I first read this I was surprised that the schools hadn't issued a statement & letter before this. Of course the children were frightened & wondering why they weren't permitted outside and they needed to be told SOMEthing - but I think the teacher's phrasing should have been better . . . even if she didn't use those exact words, it's what your nephew "heard."
