One of the highlights of our recent visit was when my 6 year old pulled the Sword out of the Stone.

There were a bunch of people trying, and were not able to pull it.

My son tried, and was able to pull it with ease.

Next another boy (maybe 10 years old) tried, and he couldn't understand why it wouldn't come out for him.

My son went back and said let me show you how, and was able to pull it again.

He did it about 5 times. A bit of a crowd started to gather as the 2 of them went back and forth. He kept asking him - "How are you doing that?" and my son innocently replied "I am just lifting it... like this"

A photopass photographer was there to capture it all, I don't have the pics yet as we are still editing. But I do have some pics I took with my camera.

It was truly a magical moment.

This is my daughter trying to pull it - unsuccesfully - she was a good sport about it though.

My 6 year old was able to pull it, he thinks he's a superhero now.

Here he is pushing it back in.

And then he did it again (actually 5 times I beleive) - the older boy behind him couldn't understand how he was doing it. His mom was enjoying the moment as well.

My DD5 did it on one of our trips as well!! She was able to pull it and so a rather muscular young man decided if she could surely he could as well....nope! To make matters worse she walked right back up after him and pulled it again!! Those are some of my favorite pictures we have ever taken at WDW! She looked at me after pulling it and said "does this mean I am like Queen of this place now?" I will never forget that day!!

DS was able to do it on two different trips. It is really awesome to watch the kids (not just mine). The look on their faces is priceless!!!

I can't believe, we've never attempted this! How could we have missed it all these years? How cool!:goodvibes

I thought you couldn't pull it out anymore! I think my kids are too old now.

I remember when there was a ceremony and Merlin would be there. My son was 8 at the time, and was chosen to try to pull the sword from the stone. He was able to do it, while a big muscular guy was not. My son was declared "temporary ruler of the realm" Merlin put a crown and cape on him, and he got a Magical Moments certificate.

I wish that show was still happening, it was such a special moment for him, and a precious memory for me.

So is there a trick to it? Is someone controlling it from a distance?

During the old Merlin show there was a guy with a controller on top of one of the stores. Must be somebody with it again watching over the sword!

I'm pretty sure it's keyed to the weight of the person trying to pull it out so only small children can do it.

That's great! My girls have tried many many times during many trips... and no such luck!

I wonder if a certain time of day makes a difference to try? And you mentioned a photo pass photog was there... wondering if they are there certain times of the day only... like meaning times of day when someone actually IS there with a remote? Just wondering, if we see photopass near there, that maybe that's are clue that it's a good time to try?

I hate to promote another site BUT the WDWRadio show did an interview with a "friend of Merlin" for the 8/29 (last week!) show and it goes into incredible detail as to how the show was done. It's very much worth listening to, but it may ruin some of the magic.

haha, I didn't even know the sword was retractable!! That's so fun, I'm glad you got pictures. :)

We've been to Disney 3 rimes this year, and it wasn't until our July trip that DD3 pulled it out. Daddy tried after her and couldn't do it.

My youngest pulled it out during Disney's Year of Magical Dreams. He was awarded a sword of his own and given a sash and certificate that read Prince Andrew. All day while we were in Fantasyland CMs addressed him as Prince Andrew. It was great, especially since his older brother was being such a pain that day. To this day every time we are in MK my older son tries to pull out that sword without any luck.
