The space shuttle landed on base here today, and we went to see it this afternoon:

Not the sort of thing you can see everyday, plus we were able to get alot closer than civilians

I saw that once many years ago. It's an amazing sight isn't it?

That's the perks that come with being married to a Security Forces guy...the flightline is his playground :) The sad part of that, though, is that the media was able to get closer than anyone else....They have this thing guarded like it is housing Fort Knox...5 police vehicles doing perimeter patrols, plus foot guards all around the plane, and another group at the restricted perimeter, plus, of course, it's on the base flightline so civilians can't even get on base without an escort.

kinda makes you wonder what is in the escort plane, doesn't it?? If it was strictly for cargo it wouldn't have all the windows, and I can't see it needing a crew of 200 people...though it DID have a significant number of people with it.

According to some of the guys guarding it, they have it under a tighter lockdown than they did for Air Force One when it was there...one of our buddies got to go ON that plane when it was here....now THAT would have been cool to see.

Very cool! I took my boys to see it since we live close to the base but we didn't get near the view you did. We were in the Wal-Mart parking lot with Channel 11.

We saw it leave Nov. 15th. We actually got tickets to be at the Space Center. I called about a week before with the Travel Company that buys out almost all the tickets.
We had to be on the Space ground all day and it took off at 7:55 p.m.

We were the only American's. Everybody else was from every country imaginable.

It was one of the things to see in your lifetime. I am so glad we went.

WOW! Thanks for posting and sharing! HOW AWESOME! Calling DS up to see your pics!:thumbsup2

WOW! I bet it costs over $100K just to install the tail piece to the shuttle! Before mounting it to the transport.

if i heard right, it is scheduled to depart around 9am tomorrow morning.

It is at the NAS/JRB --Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base at Carswell Field....whoever thought THAT was a good name for it when it reopened should be shot.....Most of us just call it Carswell.

I believe there is a good view from Lockheed if you can get there. Feel free to download my pics though if you want to. :)

Great photos! Is that plane made specifically to transport the space shuttles? It looks like there are a few permanent "additions" to it.
