Have you guys heard about this?

It was sweet that she put "Thank you it was great." On there. That's as good as cash! ;):lmao:

If she's a single mom and money is tight, how can she afford a $140 meal?

How many kids does she have? Dh, me and our 3 kids go out to eat and don't spend near that!

I'd read on a website (I think it was the Stained Apron) that if you can't afford to tip you shouldn't go out.

I'm not sure if I agree with that or not, but taking it into consideration, $140 for a meal is a lot (depending on how many were there) for a single mom. Maybe she should have picked a less expensive place so she could leave a tip?

Ding ding ding!

If you are cheap and don't tip, whatever. You can't make people do anything, but putting down that (or any excuse) is just ridiculous. Own your cheapness.

I wonder if she gave any thought to the financial situation of the person who lost money waiting on her.

My parents always said, "If you can't afford the restaurant, the tip, and the babysitter, you can't afford the night out."

Just to play Devil's advocate. What if the single mom thought that the meal would cost $100 tops? Or maybe she got stuck with the bill and wasn't expecting it?

Would that be a valid reason to not tip?

No.

There's no valid reason.

I said it on the website post and I'll say it again. I think that whoever posted it is messing with people. The writing is different from the bottom and the "note" on the tip line and I leave the tip line blank enough times, mostly I put a 0 with a line through it because I like to leave a cash tip so it all goes to the server but put the meal on my card for points.

The only valid reason would be poor service. And even then, for such a big bill, she should involve the manager if service was that poor.

If the menu had the wrong prices printed and insisted on charging her the higher, incorrect price, then sure. If the prices were listed there is no reason you can't do a little <expletive deleted> math and figure it out.

Not for me. generally menus will have the prices so if I'm on a tight budget I'm usually mentally counting as the kids order. So there really isn't much that is "unexpected"

Personally I have a problem with the note itself, more than the non-tip. IMO it's almost as if the person is saying "yeah, I know I'm screwing you but thank you anyway". If you're not going to tip simply get up and leave

I think that's bogus. The handwriting doesn't match between 'single mom...' and 'Thank you...' which leads me to believe someone left a cash tip and someone else is trolling the interwebs with an altered receipt.
