the show Mike and Molly...does this bother anyone else?

LOL - I heard that on "House" - 7's attract 7's ; 3's attract 3's and so on, but having money can move you up a couple of notches which is why Bill Gates looks so sexy :)

Yeah, I think it's not so much "Attract" but more "this is the best I can do" That's why money and fame break the "like attract like" rule

I don't watch either of those shows regularly but have seen ads for them....but for some bizarre reason, the standards seem to be different for black people, especially black women when it comes to television. Think about American Idol. There have been heavier black women, but I don't recall any heavy white girls on American Idol. Somehow it is ok if you are a heavy Black female, but not white. Who knows why these things are the way they are, but I have definitely noticed it.

I think - at least for women - black women are much more self confident, no matter what their size.

I think self confidence shiiiiiines, and a confident heavy black woman just is more "attractive" than an insecure heavy white woman. JMO.

I rarely see a "hot" guy with a not so hot girl. It's usually the other way around. I think men are much more physical creatures and rely on visual looks more than woman.

I agree with a pp that most people gravitate towards their "social" match.

The one that always stuck in my mind as annoying was "Shallow Hal" -- the movie that rigged Gwenneth Paltrow up in a fat suit, and paired her with -- of all people -- Jack Black. (Now Jack Black is quite a handsome man, but AFAIK, the only movie of his that he's been "buff" for was Mars Attacks.)

I remember thinking at the time that that would have been a MUCH better film if they had used a larger actress and faked the "thin fantasy" scenes with CGI, rather than putting a thin actress in a fat suit. Paltrow looked beyond bizarre rigged up that way; not just overweight but simply peculiar.

That seems like a pretty big generalization. What are you basing that on?

Deep, decade long studies, with psychiatrists, therapists and Nobel prize winning Doctors....

My friends. Simple as that. My overweight white friends versus my overweight black friends. The "I think" and the "JMO" at the end of the post, which you snipped out should have clarified that. :)

I was shopping last night and I saw a petite cute blonde with this huge man and they were with their kids. My one neighbor is cute and tiny and her husband is large.

But you don't see the reverse very often. A plus sized women with a thin/trim guy.

I personally love the show. I find it annoying that people are complaining about seeing two plus sized people in an intimate relationship.

This is the first show since Roseanne that shows a couple that looks and acts like DH and I (and honestly most of our friends). For example, when I got a CPAP machine, DH had a learning curve;) (although mine's very quiet). They are more representative of middle America than 99% of what's on tv. If anything, I think the mom/sis come off as more stereotyped than the main characters do!

I've now watched the show three times and I won't be watching it anymore for reasons that when I put them down in words seem offensive:confused3 I'm no skinny-minny but I find it rather repulsive to make jokes about someone being so heavy they need a CPAP machine. How sexy is that?:sad2:

As for heavy women attracting good looking, healthy men, it happens few and far between. Even at 15# overweight my dating prospects drop by probably more than 50%, at 25# they drop to next to nil. Thus my non-dating status at the moment;) No one wants to date a fat chick:laughing: My friends don't seem to understand this because they too have gained the 25# over that many years in marriage but are their husbands going to divorce them for gaining that weight? No. Would they date them if they were suddenly single. I doubt it. Hey, if anyone knows a good looking guy (I like mine a bit on the heavy side, lol, send them my way):rotfl:

I just got a CPAP machine a week ago and that episode had DBF and I laughing so hard.

Do only fat people need a CPAP?

CR, I agree with you about overweight black women having more self-confidence than overweight white women.

I just don't see what all the fuss is about with this show. Do people really need TV shows with actors who are "just like them" in order to enjoy it?

TV isn't supposed to be reality, not even "reality TV."

Do only fat people need a CPAP?
-snort- I completely misread that...

CR, I agree with you about overweight black women having more self-confidence than overweight white women.

Agree. I've always noticed that in "white" society, being super crazy thin is the most desired body type (if the media is the regulator of such things), whereas women who have a more Ethnic look to them seem to be more socially accepted when it comes to having curves (J. Lo, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, etc.).

There are very few blonde haired/blue eyed actresses who have much junk in their trunk, but plenty of added curves up top, IYKWIM.

I like this show, but I really miss the King of Queens. Kevin James was very funny.
I don't really care about their weight. The only thing that bothers me is overweight kids - like Manny on Modern Family. That really can't be an indicator for long life for those children.

Very interesting reading some of these replies. I'm overweight and married to a thin, atheletic, muscular man. I think he is pretty handsome and he still gets some googly eyes from females so I guess they agree.

My husband has caught flack from people from the first moment we started dating. Poor guy has been called a chubby chaser, told he was doing a good thing for a "nice" girl, told he could do a whole lot better/hotter, and variety of other things. When we were younger and would go out all kinds of ladies would try to interupt us or get him to dance or whatever. I've said many times "lady, he isn't looking for an STD keep on walking..."

I've seen Mike and Molly a few times. I really didn't like it because of all the fat people jokes. I think it's great concept and they are a cute tv couple but I think the jokes over the top.

Do only fat people need a CPAP?

Ummm, I don't know, but I think I'm still sexy even if I am fat and do need a CPAP:). My sleep dr has told me that due to the size of my neck and sinus condition, I will probably need it (albeit set at lower levels) even as I lose weight (which I am doing).

And my DS looked like Manny at that age, but I like to think he'll live a good long life, since he eats healthy and is extremely active. I'd hate to see this thread turn into one of "those" threads....

Terri
(da sexy CPAP usin' chubby chick ;))

While it doesn't bother me, as a fat girl from waaaayyyy back it really doesn't mirror my own experiences. The majority of guys dated before I married were not overweight. My husband of over 12 yrs. is normal size (6', 185 lbs.). I'd much rather someone be a little heavier than skinnier so I feel like they can "handle" me.

I generally like the show, and the weight thing really doesn't seem like the overwhelming theme.

I'm really glad to know they make jokes about their size, because it means we won't be watching for sure. I had a feeling I wouldn't like it, but if it had just been a show about two people in love, I might have dealt with it, but not if they are making fun.

But I have a different perspective, as I've been of varying sizes throughout my life (always thinking I was bigger than I was, until I hit a truly larger size and then thought I was smaller than I was), and I hate and despise being heavy. I went shopping the other week and found out what size I still am despite working out consistently for a year, and I'm still not over that feeling. I can't stand this, and hubby feels that way about himself, too (he does have a pituitary tumor, which doesn't make things easy, but if he REALLY works hard he does start to lose)...so I think we woudln't be able to watch it, as we'd be seeing ourselves, and hating it. Not to mention, my name's Molly and there are way too few characters with that name that I like, sigh.

All that said, except for right now, being as heavy as I am, when simply a bit overweight, I have almost never had a problem dating. As long as I projected confidence, guys responded. Skinny, medium, solid, or bigger-than-solid, didn't matter, I dated 'em all.

Might just be regional differences, but I see bigger women with skinny/average men all the time. Women often gain weight after having babies, so I don't think it's uncommon at all.

As for hotness, I've known tons of gorgeous men who date and marry average-to-me looking women. Drove me crazy in college!

I agree with all of this.
